I applaud the drivers from the 80's, back when the slowest at the SS's was 200mph. But I see too much nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia in these comments. And ironic or not, the man we see in this video supported with fervor the safety innovations you guys seem to complain about.
With all of the technologic advances in auto-racing, why racing with 850hp stock cars with the safety features from 25 years ago? I'm sure it doesn't take something so inadmissible to make NASCAR "be NASCAR again".
Why didnt they need the protective seats, hans device, and all the other safety stuff? This was back when the drivers respected each other and knew the dangers they all faced. Todays drivers have almost no respect for each other and will retaliate at the dumbest points possible.
Back when NASCAR was NASCAR. My how the times have changed. I just wish the cars AND DRIVERS could;ve stayed this way.BUt as with everything, things change. AT LEAST THE DRIVERS SHOULDNT CHANGE!!!! Now its all about, "a good points finish." FUCK THAT! I came here to win and if i dont win well that i just fucked up.
Back when race car drivers where wheelman.. setups were par at best.. they made up for it with talent and guts... 3/4 of the so called drivers today wouldnt hack it in those days...
problem is, with what we can do today with a car, 250-260 is probably what kind of speeds a cup car of the old design would be turning. maybe now that theyve muddied up the nose, it can be slowed down with aero. The Indy race in 08 was my final straw with nascar. 10 lap trophy dashes all day long... NOT a race. that race should have been postponed until proper tires were available. shame on nascar.
Holy shit look at him fight that wheel. Now thats how you dictate a good driver. Plus, look at thatm its almost like a computer chair! No headests or fancy seat shape to conform to the body. Thats crazy.
@Petrooli I said conform to the body because the best way to keep the driver safe is to almost wrap him in the seat so he doesn't get the chance to move around in there. Never said anything about comfort man. Only thing that was added for "comfort" more than "safety" was a headrest and that's about it.
@TheJasb750 I definitely agree too man. I'm saying that look at how the cars drove back then. It was nowhere near as smooth as the guys have it today. This was when real men drove race cars. Not saying NASCAR is by any means easy, but almost anyone could get in a car and drive good laps around Daytona and Talladega now.
As well as Bias-Ply tires and actual Glass windshields which always cracked whenever they raced at Daytona or Talladega. Even though I was born in the summer of '81, I was about 5 when the last "unrestricted" Daytona 500 took place and the speeds in excess of 215mph back in the mid 80's makes the current speeds of 185-190 look pedestrian.
I do remember that the Bias-Plys were very adjustable (unlike with the current radials of today with virtually fixed minimum tire pressures), especially at Daytona and Talladega because back then, if the tire stagger wasn't right, it could mean positions on the track and lap times.
Get rid of the Radial tire, bring back the Bias-Ply tire. Make the tires 2-4 inchs wider. And then we'll see if the drivers complain that the COT doesn't drive right. Cause NASCAR uses the narrowiest tire in racing. And i'd like too see the wider tires in NASCAR.
It would be interesting to see the current drivers racing on the bias-plys with the COT which most people think that the races would be more interesting to watch and trying to find the perfect tire stagger. Also, I think for Martinsville only, they should be able to mount 16-inch rims on the cars to accomidate bigger brake discs/pads/shoes cause the brakes barely last the race distance there.
I like the idea of bigger brakes. But also on the road courses too. But in all seriousiness, NASCAR will not get rid of the Radial tire. If they don't get rid of it, atleast make it wider.
I totally forgot that the brakes wear out just as quickly on the road courses as the short tracks. Also, I like the idea to widen the contact patch of the radials and would also like to see them engine-wise go from carburetors to fuel-injection since they have been running on unleaded fuel for the past couple of seasons.
I don't have a problem with carburetors. But fuel injection would be nice. If NASCAR would be smart they'd give the teams a choice of one or the other. CORR does the same thing.
One of the reasons I said fuel injection because most, if not all passenger cars and trucks from the four manufactuers in NASCAR run it. If they give the teams a choice of either the carb or fuel injection like in CORR, how would they balance it out to make both engine setups run equally, especially at Daytona & Talladega?
Mandate the size of the hole which the fuel goes threw. And make sure it isn't electronic. Because if the motor blows then bad things will happen. That is way NASCAR has stuck with carburation. Its safer, old but safer.
BTW, i don't know much about fuel injection. So if i'm wrong correct me.
One thing about FI vs. Carbs is carburetors are VERY easy to adjust for power, and easy to make work. All with a simple set of handtools. Changing jets is a snap, everything's easy to do once you figure it out since they're all Holley designs. With FI, you have to do everything through computer. It'd be thousands of dollars to develop a system like that. I'll stand behind the carbs. They'd have to find injectors per track and all. Plus, what about plate tracks? Can't put a plate on EFI.
@mengers06 I think fuel injection and more tech is the way to go, so I politely disagree, but what's wrong with a company like McLaren making a standardized ECU that you can't tamper with, like F1 has? And with fuel injection, drivers can adjust the mixture from in-car when they have to save fuel. just curious what your take is.
@GTRF1V8 Fuel injection would ruin it all. Carbs have been in nascar since the beginning, (obviously lol) and should stay there forever. It would ruin the sounds of the cars...the traditional mechanics and come on....you wouldnt see pit crews squirting bottles of ether into the carb when they cant fire up their car during a race. :) I just think they should leave the engines the way they are. TOO MANY purists in nascar. Its like changing the field to 25 cars instead of 43
@nebulae87 watching mechanics squirt fuel in the carb doesn't interest me. FI would allow the drivers to adjust the fuel mixture, and anyway, every other series made the change, and their series don't have ecu issues, so NASCAR can learn how to do it right. and have a listen to a V8 supercar. probably too much tech there, but it sounds better than a cup car, and it has FI.
@GTRF1V8 well i'm just saying....there's nothing like carburated v-8's. Especially when it comes to stock cars. The sport was always a southern sport....and then it it just lost all its roots and turned into some DISNEYLAND type of racing series where dirtbiker, indy racers etc try to come in and race. NASCAR hasnt been the same since the early 90's and FI would just make it worse. idk...i'd rather have them carburated
This is Awesome.. Look how hard he is breathing when it shows him coming off the turn. You can see his chest expanding and contracting like crazy. Just think they did that for 3 1/2 - 4 hours!!!
Cars back then were a handful to drive compared to today's cars. I have a lot of respect for all of the driver's from that era. DW's Tide car was one of the best looking cars ever raced IMO.
That does not look too comfortable. Anyone who says racing is not a sport and does not require athletic ability is full of it. Look at Waltrip fighting the car.
Not that Gordon, Stewart and Kenseth, etc. are as (or more talented) but MAN drivers in the 70's and 80's were brave. That things is sliding at 210+ and that big window is crazy. Fun!

They should bring back the Bias-Ply tire. It had alot grip but hardly ever failed. I may be wrong but i liked that tire.
Unrestricted reaces today are way too dangerous. With todays technonlogy 210 is easy too do.
