For all you WBLS Rap Attack fans, I have a riddle for you. I'm looking for a song played on the Rap Attack Exclusive back in '85-86'. Hint.-Female rap group-names Marquita, Paradise and Shanato- Lyrics to the end of song goes-"No matter what don't tell lies, number two, when your talkin' look me in my eyes, number three make sure your speech is clear and number four baby come here." Does this sound familiar to anyone. "There's nothing about frontin." -more lyrics
Hi TStorm73 it's funny your just emailing me. I actually found the song one week ago and literally jumped out of my seat. I first heard that song when I was 11 years old and lost the song in '93 so all this time I was searching for it. Thanks so much for searching the song for me. You really know your hip hop b/c everyone I gave the lyrics too could not figure it out. I'm impressed. God bless.

@Joeygee23 yeah they used to feud all the time and man it really on back then. BDP was feuding with magic. rox shante with krs. mc shan and krs. man it was on in those days... i used to like chuck chillout a lot too on kiss fm on fri nites.. i liked his style of mixing and he always played the B-BOYS 2-3- break which he produced..
remember on sunday nights bls would do `the quiet storm` anyone remember the name of that dj..he sounded like don cornilius from soul train..shit it mighta even been him..
WBLS it's true they was in a class by it self we use to have house party's just tunning in to mr magic on wbls 107.5 fm on a friday and saturday they really brought the house down.a friend of mine took me to a old school party the dj had oldschool jam my friend told the dj to let me on the 1&2's i rocked that shit seriously i'm a oldschool dj one ofthe best and still got it DJ MASTER D AKA BUDDA DAVE ORIGINAL since 1982
@KiddJetix Aight thats wassup, My man Ant an Austrailian homey sent me a cd with that on it and some more WHBI and WBLS stuff about a month after I asked about the link.
OH HELL yes, now this brings back memories.. hanging outside of clubs in NYC in the 80s .. RIP Mr Magic. I used to wait all week to hear these shows. Taped a bunch of them back in the days.. probably lost the tapes over the year.
I had the chance to know Mr Magic for a couple of years. I remember him telling me about that grand theft auto shit all excited going to do the voice overs. He was a real funny fuckin dude. Gave me a lot of advice on things man, may he rest in peace.
look i'm in my early 40's my memory maybe a little off, but I was close. Any way I use to listen 98.7 Kiss with DJ Red Alert aswell. New York city pioneered Mix Show Radio. "You say we play" "This is cool dj red alert" "yesssssssssssssssssss!"
This was what Brooklyn sounded like! Now Brooklyn is colonized by spoiled suburban yuppies and their even more spoiled hipster brats. I want to go back in time to when New York was really New York, and not the overpriced luxury tower contaminated landscape it is today.
Thanks. But as I re-read what I wrote I see it was coming from a pretty bitter point of view! I'm not usually so nasty! I just guess I feel a bit uneasy about the changes this great city has been going through. There's room in NY for every group. That's what makes NYC so cool. Every nationality, color, religion and economic class is represented here and no one is tossing bombs at each other like so many places on Earth. I'd love to see NYC come up TOGETHER, that's what I should've wrote. Peace.
@mindstormsabrewin you are rt.no one in the world would new how we put in down back in the dayz..... Virginia s/n carolina was trying to keep up with the rap attack the only way they did was because alot of new york cats had cousin in the south and they would bring a cassette tape with then while visiting..............we will never see dayz like this again
@run666 Wow! Reading back what I wrote I can tell I was "in a mood"! Sorry about the negativity! It's just hard to see what's happening to my beloved Brooklyn and not get a bit "emotional"! I guess things change. When I was a kid, the adults would bitch about us and our music. Every generation is freaked out by the next one up. I'm just grateful I got to be here and see NYC when it was at it's coolest.
@mindstormsabrewin its all good.. u dont have to apoligize for anything my man.. yes those were the best days of hip hop. i was working in manhatten in 1984-1990 on 51st and 6th ave. i was in the middle of MADDD hip hop going on down the block from roseland, latin quarter, and the last days of studio 54 "RIGHT before they closed... and of course we cant forget '" UNION SQUARE" on 17th and bwy!!!
@mindstormsabrewin ok ok ----- i know im going on and on but i have one more thing to say. one nite magic was giving out a pair of tickets to the krush groove tour at the garden.. i won them and went and the line up was RUN-DMC, FAT BOYS, WHODINI, DOUG FRESH, KURT BLOW... i had $150 bucks on me and bought a $20 of skunk weed and 3 quaaludes, i walked in and all i heard was ( 6 min dougie,, 6 min dougie, 6 min dougie fresh your on!!! lol
@run666 I miss the Boom Box wars in the subway. The Puerto Rican guys on one side of the train with their music and the homeboys on the other side with the grooves. And me and my dad going to Coney island on the train right in the middle. My dad is an old school doo-wop guy that used to sing in the subways when he was a kid. So this scene pissed him off! LOL! But I LOVED it. Break dancing on old linoleum or cardboard. Murals on the trains. Great times.
listen to Mr Magic show., New York shit! I was in trenton n.j. roger garden projects cooligde av.,,5%Nation of Gods & Earths, the best times in my life....RIP Mr Magic.
Trenton High Stand up!!......i live in west philly these days peace..
rest in peace mr magic u inspired me as well as a whole lot of generations to come u opened the doors to mainstream america when they said hip hop was just a fad look now how far its come its cuz of pioneers like u that has made this possible peace my brother like no other
In a class by itself! 107.5 WBLS FM is still the best in old school & Mr. Magic remains forever in hip hop. IN CONTROL, IN CONTROL, IN CONTROL... (and it keeps on going) & this was my time back in the year of 1985. That was fresh!
I remember Beating up on KRS-1 and RED Alert with great impact during the RADIO Wars and the Bridge Wars stemming from that whole rivalry 107.5 WBLS RAP ATTACK SHOW HEADED by Mr. Magic VS 98.7 KISS Red Alert Show on 98.7 KISS both New York City Radio Stations... of course that always was a no brainer-- MR MAGICS RAP ATTACK SHOW ALWAYS WON Against RED Alert of 98.7 KISS FM including everybody else that tried to clone his show NO COMPETITION-No Equal For the Rapp Attack SHOW...
I remember sitting up in my boys window on Friday or Saturday night listening to Magic and Marley or going down the dial (back and forth) to Red Alert. These were the good days in the Bronx.
Bogota-Colombia HANS MARINKELLE.
Mad love from Trenton. Had to fix the antenna just so to pick up the show in the beginning. Wow how glad I am I was born where and when I was. Wouldn't trade the memories for anything. R.I.P. Mr. Magic..........one love & thanks again for the memories...
Yes he is & I'm glad! When I got the news earlier, people were saying Marley Marl, but I checked into it @ It was Mr. Magic. People often assumed these two different people were one in the same. That's where the confusion came in. They would say "Marley Marl, aka Mr. Magic", but they are two separate people. So I at least have straight now. Nevertheless, we lost a GREAT DJ who pioneered the early radio hip hop shows! Mr. Magic will surely be missed! R.I.P.
R.I.P. Super Rockin Mr. Magic, you let hiphop inspire my life thru commercial radio, thank you Sir Juice, positive blessings, you'll be truly missed, but ur shows live on!
Mann, what's going on this year? First Tony D, then DJ AM, then Grandmaster Roc Raida, and now Mr Magic. RIP to all of these pioneers that I still look up to. It's time to pull out and cherish all of my old mixtapes from the WBLS days.
Nah,but I need to start burning them on CD's and rip em up on my laptop so I can listen to them more-I wouldn't even feel right if I parted with them, they bring back so many good memories.
Of course,no doubt! I plan on posting up some of that stuff soon, but I can't see myself selling them. Stay tuned ,some of those mixes will be up soon.
I know I have 1 cassette I can upload somewhere. I lost the rest when my car was broken into and they stole all my tapes...what a loss :( I would love to get some if you can!!
Im from Irvington,NJ, I remember Hal Jackson on 1430 WNJR AM, "Come on down to palisades Park", I grew up on Frankie Crocker "The chief rocker"or how he used to say. " If your radio isnt on 107.5 it really isnt on". RIP Frankie Crocker.
I used to love they would say 107.5 WBLS where you hear, and they would say all the different artist....... I'm glad I grew up and Irvington New Jersey and got to hear the great stations.... Does anyone remember 1430 WNJR Newark on the AM dial........
Back in the day's when someone from holland went to NY he had to bring back as much tapes with KISS FM and WBLS as possible then everybody here started overtaping like crazy!!! Classic
You know a lot of these kids dont know just how much of a big deal it was that rap was being played on the radio, that little 30 min made everybody stand up at attention
I bet ya'll aint peep this. WBLS was Juice Crew central while KISS FM rode BDP's jock. That's another element of NY hip hop not explained. KRS-1 and Red Alert vs. Marley Marl/Mr. Magic and MC Shan... i heard Shan was mad at Kane for being on Kiss so much back in the day. Can anyone confirm?
I don't know about Shan being heated, but I do know Kane was cool with BDP and chose to stay out of the JC/BDP war (even though he wrote "Have A Nice Day" for Roxanne Shante' where she took shots ant BDP). I guess when you have a cut out,you try to get it played as many places as possible wheter its Marley,Red,Chuck,Hank Love & DNA etc. Kane and G Rap's songs got as much burn on KISS FM as they did on 'BLS.
. Does anybody have this WHBI jingle by Marlon & Spyder Dee winter 1984 it starts off wit Marley scratchin " Fresh Kid" Mr Hydes verse on AM/PM... Spy dee: turn ya radios up keep ya dial in line to da station wit da numbers 105.9 W then U add da H da BI wit music so fresh dat U cant deny/ cuz were da top da best da cold beat crushers/ also better known as da sucker station busters/wit my mellow mr magic and da juice crew & dj marly marl cuttin beats so true/ we'll rock you right up out ya seat
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a old school joint that Marley mixed sometime in 84 or 85. I don't know the title but the chorus went " Growing up in the world today, different from yesterday. We'd like to go out and have a good time but that ain't our mama's way". I've tried everyway possible to look this song up and got nowhere. Any help will be appreciated.
MAN WHERE ARE ALL THE ARTISTS THAT MADE THIS MUSIC POSSIBLE AT. when i here this i dont expect it to relate to the MORONS KIDZ of today. GREAT MIX THANKS FOR BRINGING ME BACK
Anyone remember when WBLS had the "Thunderstorms" ? They would say your in the middle of a Thunderstorm and a DJ would come on and spin an hour . That was hot .
I was only 9 years old back then when I was listening to it down in Des Moines, Iowa, and I will never forget how true hip-hop is supposed to sound. I just keep on studying the foundation!! PEACE
oh yes real hip hop!i'm from pittsburgh but we use to get stuff from new york bck in tha 80's!new york ruled bck then and it was ALRIGHT!!!!!

Bogota-Colombia HANS MARINKELLE.

Can anyone confirm?
unseenson1 2 years ago
I don't know about Shan being heated, but I do know Kane was cool with BDP and chose to stay out of the JC/BDP war (even though he wrote "Have A Nice Day" for Roxanne Shante' where she took shots ant BDP). I guess when you have a cut out,you try to get it played as many places as possible wheter its Marley,Red,Chuck,Hank Love & DNA etc. Kane and G Rap's songs got as much burn on KISS FM as they did on 'BLS.
