  • The Way It Otta Be

  • SARAH... MARAVILHOSA... GILLESPIE... MAGNIFICO...

  • me encanta esta cancion y esta versioooooooooooooooooon

  • no lo olvidriaré

  • Sarah's voice = an instrument! True beauty!

  • I feel like crying...... i wish i was there.

  • I could listen to these true "singers" and "musicians" like Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and Hancock ALL DAY and ANY DAY over the modern day garbage of today.

  • @JazzyZenBrotha

Don't get me started on the modern junk that is being thrown out there for the public from the so-called music industry. Sarah Vaughan has more talent, skill, and artistry wrapped around her little finger than these pop singers who called themselves "singers" and "artists". Sarah Vaughan is a TRUE singer and artist and it shows in her music. You can tell that she puts her whole self into a song, giving it all that she got and in the end she delivers nothing but quality.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 - Absolutely agreed! No need to tell me twice lol. I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, for me as a Black man living in the era of (C)rap music & pop cow manure I am expected to listen to the "popular" stuff. But instead I listen to S Vaughan, Monk, George Benson, Coltrane, Nat Cole & even R&B greats like Jill Scott, Keith Sweat, Boyz II Men so I get a lot of hate for liking "quality" over crappy "quantity" of modern (C)crap music & little boy pop music.

  • Sarah... The Sassy! Her voice was like a superb wine. It aged beautifully, and got better and better as time went on. x

  • amoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo SARAHHHHHHHHHHH maravilhosaaaaaa

  • wtf is she on i the beginning sabadabado scooby doo

  • Dizzy Gillespie WAS a black American! Why the reference to skin color???

  • Comment removed

  • @MrninjaFTW Seriously!? Such Ignorance

  • and if she was such a lousy person, to other band members, how is it that these greats would even play for her????????????????

  • AWESOME.....!!!!

  • Sing it Sarah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tawk amoungst y'selves... I'm verklept!

  • never mind ther band ....man to you hear what she's doing to this piece

  • man, the band is just the best.

  • i have watched this twice and just realized that is Dizzy on the trumpet.

    :D

  • @mochi65 notice the kid on piano? Herbie Hancock! Where do you get tickets for this kid of session!?!

  • Sarah Vaughan respecting a musician. Not her usual... Only because Gillespie was incredible. She was such a lousy person. Great voice, lousy person

  • @meepmeepXroadrunner

I have heard her time and again give credit to her musicians and seems like she has a great rapport with them. Even if you a right, this is about music and she delivers. Now you yourself are not perfect and I bet you have some nasty ways yourself.!!

  • @meepmeepXroadrunner

what do you mean lousy person? I have never heard that before. I saw a special on PBS about her and it was quite sad. I guess they are saying that about Beethoven too (who has universally been recognized to be the greatest classical composer ever ) What difference does it make if they were a lousy person, it is their art we are interested in. Sarah is 100, and everyone else is less than 10. She was that good.

    she was a musician herself.

  • beautifull !!!

  • Bet you never heard "Round Midnight" like this. Wow. She sounds like one of the horns. I have her doing this song on a cd, she is singing not scatting on this cd. This is fabulous stuff.....I love you Sarah......always

  • I believe this is called scat singing

    It's great!

  • This is a FUCKING MASTERPIECE. I'm sorry for the language buts exactly what came out as I sat here and listened.

  • I like Sarah Vaughn, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen Mcrae, Etta Jones. Those are "my" favs. and I do not have them listed in any particular order.

  • So much cooler than those awful lyrics..

  • ouch!brilliant!

  • Best jazz singer in the world ever! There are others I dig but not so well as Sass. She taught the world how jazz should be sung. She was a consummate musician, played great piano. I miss her music so much and her as well. We all hung out together every night back in the day when she was in town.

  • if this doesn't kill u, u'll never die.

  • don't get much better than this!

  • I love her always!!! My Idol!!!

  • Wowzers!!!!! loooove this!!!!!!

  • simply amazing

  • The story of Dizzy's trumpet goes that it hit the floor one time and bent it. When he tried to play it, he actually liked the sound that he got from it so that's what he stuck with.

  • the beauty of this song is in the lyrics. With a horn player already in this band did she also have to blow the horn? Lovely textures in her voice though.

  • what a soooooo cooooolll!!!!

    can buy DVD?

  • What is that trumpet? It looks so weird.....

  • @theheroricky It's so Diz can loojk down and have the bell face the mike and the audience

  • I have a record of SARAH WAUGHAN singin this téme in the 60's with words , no in skat vocal like here . I prefer this versión in sacat vocal . I think SARAh is the best jazz singer of all times.

  • sorry...FIND!!!! ;-)

  • ...o qué hacer cuando no te acuerdas de la letra.

  • no olvidries aceitarte el cerebro.....

  • @59argendor no olvides tu sentido del humor

  • I have such fond memories of this clip. The concert was broadcast in the uk during the Christmas holidays of 1987. Wonderful to see it on youtube (there was a great version of Bemsha Swing with Don Cherry, wonder if you have that? ;-)

  • you can easily found a dvd of this show...the title is SASS&BRASS, SARAH VAUGHAN AND FRIENDS.

  • DIZZY GILLESPIE, trompeta; HERBIE HANCOCK, piano; RON CARTER, contrabajo, BILLY HIGGINS,, batería

¡¡10 puntos oara este tema de THELONIOUS MONK interpretado por estos 5 números uno!!

  • and with herbie.....are you kidding me?

  • wow diz and ron carter at the same time.....what an honor to see

  • oh yes ma ma DO IT!

  • It should possible to vote 10 stars for videos like this one !

  • Zowie-doobe we! That's hot !!

  • I love that trumpet. The way it's built guarantees projection. The fact that the tone is still pretty awesome gets me right at the eyes and eardrums at the exact same time.

  • your such a poor self defeated, coward when it come to talking about someone, it seems that your a thing that is unvited!, and not a person, but a swine from filthy polluted waters, go back to the bottom of the pit where you belong

  • He himself admits that he looks like a frog.Of course no one minds(not me).The notes the phrasing ,the ideas, and last but not least his stuff he has done for jazz is not possible to equate.I love Dizzy and Parker

  • Maaan...Dizzy, Sarah, Carter and Herbie...just....maaaaaaannn....

  • This is awesome!

Sarah's using of her voice as a "trumpet" is spot on - and better tuned!

    Absolutely fantastic.

I give Sarah the ultimate accolade I can bestow:

You were not just a singer

    You were a musician.

  • Musicianship

  • wow

  • Wasn't that a time? Dizzy, Sassy and Ray Brown. We could live another ten lifetimes and never get back to that place. Did we take it for granted? No way. We knew what we were witnessing. But, like all things, it had its time, and the moving finger moved on. Enjoy.

  • Ron Carter on bass in this clip.

  • Yes, cjelman. it sure is. I got too carried away by Sarah and Diz. Mind you, it's name shame being confused with Ray Brown.

  • Srew words when sarah vaughn is singin. Resplendent !

  • but i see billy higgins likes her:)

back in the years he partnered with another individual to open the world stage in los angeles.

i learned to play jazz there, i saw him a couple of times there...he was a very nice man, rip.

  • nobody asked you? what the hell are you doing here making a comment like that? move on; you don't know what ur talking about? Lol someone wrong in the brain if you don't appreciate Sarah? Serious.

  • shame on everyone who gave this comment a thumbs down. i love sarah vaughan, but i respect anyone who can express their lack of appreciation for her with respect to her.

  • Then she just casually sits down like what she did ain't nuffin! Woman is still A GOD! Hell this morning I heard them say Mariah Carey was a legend............WTF! I'd give anything to relive these days. Talk about going to hell when you die. Shydd with what's out today I think I died am already in hell! You tube makes me think it might just be purgatory. Thank God for Purgatory then!

  • Amen to that!!!

  • billie higgins on drums? (:

  • Dizzy is diggin' Sarah, no doubt. But the feeling is mutual, I'm sure.

  • she's amazing, a voice coming from gods.

  • This is so nice.

If the Players make it to the stage, Jazz happens.

Oh yes... Sarah and Dizzy are quite fine here!

  • considering that Dizzie was probably suffering from cancer at this time it's testament to his resilience that's he's playing here! Tempus fugit has a lot to answer for.

  • Dizzy was Dizzy and Sarah was Sarah, 'nouf said.

  • Sarah Vaughan is amazing.. Is it me or is Dizzy not quite on fire here?

  • who are the fellas of the band?

  • ron carter (bass), dizzy gillespie (horn), herbie hancock (piano). sorry about the drummer, i dont know him.

  • Thanks a lot, man.

  • drummer is Billy Higgings.

  • Billy Higgins!

  • I want to learn how to scat it seems fun, just to finish my last comment.

  • She made scatting look easy.

  • Sarah was probably the best jazz singer. Carmen Mc rae didnt joke aroung either though.

I would have preferred her to sing those beautiful Hannigan Hendricks lyrics though.

1st class jazz jazz. Sadly just does not exhist no more.

  • oh yeah.. herbie hancock and ron carter. Yes it is amazing

    but who's the drummer?

  • oh with dizzy it's beautiful

  • Wow! I guess this means you can sing a song without knowing the words. What a fantastic singer. The band's not bad either!

  • OMG...this is amazing....she gives me chills at 2:58

  • Thank god for this music !!!

    This will survive America ....

  • Supreme!

  • Ayayay!

  • Five motherfucking starts, my man. What a team

  • This is amazing. Just amazing.

  • yeah actually it is, and this isn't Sassy's swing it's Can't get started in thebeginning, i believe anyway

  • Is that Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet?

  • Yes, he is

  • I have always loved Sarah's artistry. She can make any song her own.

  • Yep, that is Billy Higgins on drums. He had that infectious smile that lasted all those years on the bandstand. Boy we sure miss him!

  • Billy Higgins was always in the zone when he accompanied the likes of Lee Morgan, Dizzy, Donald Bryd (Black Jack), Dexter Gordon etc. I recently read that he was the house drummer at most Blue Note recording sessions. I met him at his World Stage Jazz Club in Los Angeles. It was a small intimate place like the Jazz Bakery.(L.A. area) I miss that indelible smile too.

  • the man on drums looks like Billy Higgins...

  • Oh Shyt Herbie Hancock on piano, I didn't see who's on drums. Man what a band!

  • you know i just saw herbie hancock at the sgi in la and him is a very nice person and i love him music!!

  • Check out Sarah, I love this, look at Ron Carter on bass all cool and shyt. And then there's Diz! If only I could have been there.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm those velvet tones of Ms Sarah Vaughn, enchanting

  • Sarah's scat version captures the feel of the song better than the hordes of jazz pop poseurs who have covered it with keyboards and strings and noisy percussion -- not to mention flat vocals (see Amy Winehouse).

  • That is, of course, 'Round Midnight by Thelonius Monk. I was surprised she didn't sing the lyric but enjoyed the scat version, too. Nice upload!
