I could listen to these true "singers" and "musicians" like Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and Hancock ALL DAY and ANY DAY over the modern day garbage of today.
Don't get me started on the modern junk that is being thrown out there for the public from the so-called music industry. Sarah Vaughan has more talent, skill, and artistry wrapped around her little finger than these pop singers who called themselves "singers" and "artists". Sarah Vaughan is a TRUE singer and artist and it shows in her music. You can tell that she puts her whole self into a song, giving it all that she got and in the end she delivers nothing but quality.
@MusicLoverBrian1 - Absolutely agreed! No need to tell me twice lol. I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, for me as a Black man living in the era of (C)rap music & pop cow manure I am expected to listen to the "popular" stuff. But instead I listen to S Vaughan, Monk, George Benson, Coltrane, Nat Cole & even R&B greats like Jill Scott, Keith Sweat, Boyz II Men so I get a lot of hate for liking "quality" over crappy "quantity" of modern (C)crap music & little boy pop music.
I have heard her time and again give credit to her musicians and seems like she has a great rapport with them. Even if you a right, this is about music and she delivers. Now you yourself are not perfect and I bet you have some nasty ways yourself.!!
what do you mean lousy person? I have never heard that before. I saw a special on PBS about her and it was quite sad. I guess they are saying that about Beethoven too (who has universally been recognized to be the greatest classical composer ever ) What difference does it make if they were a lousy person, it is their art we are interested in. Sarah is 100, and everyone else is less than 10. She was that good.
Bet you never heard "Round Midnight" like this. Wow. She sounds like one of the horns. I have her doing this song on a cd, she is singing not scatting on this cd. This is fabulous stuff.....I love you Sarah......always
I like Sarah Vaughn, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen Mcrae, Etta Jones. Those are "my" favs. and I do not have them listed in any particular order.
Best jazz singer in the world ever! There are others I dig but not so well as Sass. She taught the world how jazz should be sung. She was a consummate musician, played great piano. I miss her music so much and her as well. We all hung out together every night back in the day when she was in town.
The story of Dizzy's trumpet goes that it hit the floor one time and bent it. When he tried to play it, he actually liked the sound that he got from it so that's what he stuck with.
the beauty of this song is in the lyrics. With a horn player already in this band did she also have to blow the horn? Lovely textures in her voice though.
I have a record of SARAH WAUGHAN singin this téme in the 60's with words , no in skat vocal like here . I prefer this versión in sacat vocal . I think SARAh is the best jazz singer of all times.
I have such fond memories of this clip. The concert was broadcast in the uk during the Christmas holidays of 1987. Wonderful to see it on youtube (there was a great version of Bemsha Swing with Don Cherry, wonder if you have that? ;-)
I love that trumpet. The way it's built guarantees projection. The fact that the tone is still pretty awesome gets me right at the eyes and eardrums at the exact same time.

dizzy is one of the worst jazz trumpet players in the world. although he might be masterful on his technique, his tone sucks ass and i cant stand it when he puffs out his cheeks!! the absolute wrong way to play trumpet...

I would take Wynton Marsalis or Miles Davis over Dizzy any day, and it's "you're", dumbass. You can't even hold an argument when you cant even speak with correct grammar. What a shame.
He himself admits that he looks like a frog.Of course no one minds(not me).The notes the phrasing ,the ideas, and last but not least his stuff he has done for jazz is not possible to equate.I love Dizzy and Parker
Wasn't that a time? Dizzy, Sassy and Ray Brown. We could live another ten lifetimes and never get back to that place. Did we take it for granted? No way. We knew what we were witnessing. But, like all things, it had its time, and the moving finger moved on. Enjoy.
nobody asked you? what the hell are you doing here making a comment like that? move on; you don't know what ur talking about? Lol someone wrong in the brain if you don't appreciate Sarah? Serious.
shame on everyone who gave this comment a thumbs down. i love sarah vaughan, but i respect anyone who can express their lack of appreciation for her with respect to her.
Then she just casually sits down like what she did ain't nuffin! Woman is still A GOD! Hell this morning I heard them say Mariah Carey was a legend............WTF! I'd give anything to relive these days. Talk about going to hell when you die. Shydd with what's out today I think I died am already in hell! You tube makes me think it might just be purgatory. Thank God for Purgatory then!
considering that Dizzie was probably suffering from cancer at this time it's testament to his resilience that's he's playing here! Tempus fugit has a lot to answer for.
Billy Higgins was always in the zone when he accompanied the likes of Lee Morgan, Dizzy, Donald Bryd (Black Jack), Dexter Gordon etc. I recently read that he was the house drummer at most Blue Note recording sessions. I met him at his World Stage Jazz Club in Los Angeles. It was a small intimate place like the Jazz Bakery.(L.A. area) I miss that indelible smile too.
