  • Way out west there was this fella... fella I wanna tell ya about. Fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. Mr. Lebowski, he called himself "The Dude". Now, "Dude" - that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense...

  • El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing....

  • 1 person doesn't roll along

  • though all in all there are some nice folks out there... of course I ain't never been to France

  • I was definately born in the wrong generation. I love this kind of music and the old west in general. Thanks for posting.

  • Why were there no "blacks" on the group? Were they racists?

  • @TheBlackCock1

  • len slye...first and best of my boyhood idols.

  • Sometimes there's a man, and I'm talking about the dude here, somtimes there's a man, well, sometimes... we'll I think I derned introduced him enough... *this will not stand, this aggression will not stand*

  • 'bombastardtcluva' I hope your whole family die a slow and painful death while getting brutally tortured infront of you!! Then you live the rest of your life alone and scared, until eventually you die a horrible deat and no one is there to care you jealous cunt!!!!

Good song by the way :)

  • This is our wedding song...

    I love it

  • This is for my momma's momma.......my mamaw...who sang for this band for a short time of her sweet life

  • @ditralavonnelankford Bless her

  • One too many people disliked this. I am sever disappoint with that person.

  • I started my career performing in Wild West Stunt Shows, and we were performing during Easter week --(around 1980)-- when Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers performed on the weekend. Roy was the nicest Man I ever met.

Thanks for the videos and memories.

  • Only in America.. This was being sung by a teacher, who was a Rabbi, and, school safety officer, in a high school in the South Bronx..! Now, ain't this a great country?

  • What a great America to have grown up in. How I miss those days and that America

  • My favourite Country and Western Group of all time.

Thanks for keeping their music alive

  • Sometimes there's a man... sometimes there's a man

  • Uh, uh, papers, um, just papers, uh, you know, uh, my papers, business papers.

    T.D. ABIDES!

  • This is a wonderful post, and I sincerely thank you for sharing it.

  • I recognize this song from city slickers, it's great and sad this isn't really around anymore the closest thing to it is bluegrass

  • I love the way they stood by each other. When two of them, Pat Brady and Lloyd Perryman, were called up for military duty, they still got paid, as if they were there. I believe Pat Brady was decorated.

  • One of the American classics! This song is a tribute to Western Americana. I'm gonna mix a cocktail and watch the sunset :0)

  • @comingrndagin mines a white russian ;-)

  • i think this is the song i want to die listening to

  • Dude!

  • Very nice tribute 5 stars

  • I met Roy when I was a kid. The RR museum was moved to Branson MO a few years ago. Swing by & take a look. Also, The Sons of the Pioneers still entertain at a supper show in Branson.

  • What beautiful memories of New Mexico in the late 40s this brought to me. Thank You! Such mellow and relaxing voices!

  • Nice tribute to a talented group and music that brings back so many good childhood memories. In the 1960s and 70s our family lived across the street from Lloyd Perryman and his wife; they were very decent and kind folks. Roy Rogers epitomized the honorable cowboy in real life as well as on the screen , and we are fortunate to have had them as examples. Happy Trails to all.

  • great song,

  • Doesn't make any difference if it is or not the original song, I still love it.

    Sons of the Pioneers Forever!!

  • But this isn't the original recording.

  • @iangordoncraig -- this is a remake the SoP recorded in the very late 40's, when they had started to experiment with "big orchestra" sound in their music. Their close harmony is as good as ever, but I think this song, which Bob Nolan wrote, didn't benefit as well as it might have from the orchestral treatment.

  • Why yes, this song does make me want to drink a White Russian.

  • And it makes me want to go out and shoot some Reds.

  • This song makes me want to see The Big Lebowski

  • Wow great look back. You did a great job on the video. Thanks for the names and dates. They were great.

  • Thank you for the comment. Could you send me some music of Them. I would love to hear them..

  • @curleyb3 Great stuff, CurleyB; Ibelieve I grew up at the right time..I never got a Roy Rogers playset, but, I'll settle for these guys any day!

  • Try the Bar J Wranglers in Jackson, Wy. and Bar D Wranglers outside Durango,CO. They have web sites w/CD's and DVD's. They both sing western songs like this one.

  • sometimes there's a man......

  • Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

  • way out west...

  • spencer was my great grandpa and he only dide a few years ago

  • I can't say I seen London, and I never been to France, and I ain't never seen no queen in her damn undies as the fella says.

  • But I'll tell you what - after seeing Los Angeles, and this here story I'm about to unfold, well, I guess I seen somethin' every bit as stupefyin' as you'd seen in any of them other places. And in English, too.

  • Dude, now theres a name no one would self apply where I come from.

  • GREAT SONG! ")

  • Wonderful piece....

  • I have loved this song since I first heard it at age five on the Lawrence Welk show. These men harmonize so beautifully. It is an ageless song and really relates the feel of being solitary out on the range. You can almost feel the wind in your hair.

  • Bob Nolan had an unusual voice, which didn't sould hillbilly, but sounded pure Western Cowboy. I found one hit where Bob did some solo. He makes a person in theEast want to go West.

  • I love them! I am only 15 and people think it's dumb to like this stuff. What ever. HA! I was wondering if anyone know who kinda has a diffrent voice...sounds kinda sounds like he is pluging his nose. He is the lead singer in "Cool Water" (I like it!)

  • It was Bob Nolan, my favorite. The dark haired taller guy.

  • @Meranque That's awesome that you're that young and like this stuff. When I was that age back in the early 1990s....I loved it too! Still do!!!!!

  • @Meranque -- that's Bob Nolan, with the voice that sounds like he's been drinking a pot of honey. He gave the SoP a unique sound.

  • The Dude!!

  • Sometimes ... there is a man!

  • Thank You curleyb3, They are my favorite Western Singers! What Role Models they were! You could always Trust any of these guys! I wish they were today, as they were back then! I hope they all are Resting In Peace! Thanks Guys for the Great Songs and Entertainment! You are always in my Heart! A Very Big Fan, Joe ( Duff ).

  • cricriiiii--Karl Farr was the first to die--He was only 51 and died in 1961. Tim Spencer died in 72 or 74. The next was Lloyd Perryman-in 1977. Bob Nolan died in 1980 and Hugh Farr died 3 months later. The last was Roy Rogers who died in 1998

  • great song indeed, also first heard it in "the big lebowski" :]

  • A great American cowboy song!Only in America! No other country has a diverse styles of music as we have here. Just a great group w/unmatched harmony! Thanks!

  • Thanks for the memories..I grew up on Roy and these guys

  • My dad's favorite song. I never knew that Roy Rogers belonged to this group. Thanks so much for the info. That is really interesting.

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE...5 STARS...

  • This is the best version! I had this, along with Cool Water, Timber, Cowboy Camp Meeting, The Everlasting Hills of Oklahoma, and others on a compilation album called "Cowboy Classics". It was the size of 45's, but had two songs per side. I've been looking everywhere for it for years, but I was told it is out of print.

  • They all died so young! (except spencer i think...)

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes they were great. I think they started the real western music.

  • Great song, First heard in "The Big Lebowski". Good movie great song.

  • 'The Dude Abides.' - The Dude

  • I love this song, and have not heard it in a long time

Back in the mid 50's, Channel 4, NBC station in Washington DC, would play old Roy Rogers Western movies at 5pm.

That is how I got to know Roy and the Sons of the Pioneers, I was 6 or 7 years old and wore my fake cowgirl hat watching them.

Always wanted to go to a dude ranch, and hear songs like this around the campfire.

Don't know if in todays world any dude ranch still has this music.

Thanks for this song and the memories.

  • The Flying W Ranch, just outside Colorado Springs still has a singing group that sings these type songs.

  • Man, it's really hard to beat that original group! Fantastic harmonizers, and musicians, with a jazzy sounding fiddle and a real lonely yet full sound that brings to mind the singing cowboy image combined with the real atmosphere of the west! I can't see how someone wouldn't just love their sound!! I know I do!!

  • Originally they were The Pioneer Trio, composed of Nolan, Rogers, and Spencer. The Farr Brothers, who were jazz musicians, were added, and helped take the Pioneers to the next level.

  • Yeah, I know, but what I really meant was the '34-'36 group, when they were known as The Sons of the Pioneers. What I probably should have said was "the early recordings", because there aren't any studio recordings from the original Pioneer Trio.

  • I'm pretty sure my parants took me to see these guys at the LAZY B RANCH in Colorado when i was ten years old. I still have the 33rpm record. Amazing how the memory of a simple ranch style supper can stick with a guy for 40+ years. God bless, and thanks for posting this.

  • Great! Love it.

  • Wooooooooooouuuuuuuu is Fabulous jejeje

    Tahnk You

  • Oh, Thank you so much! It's so beautiful. We were so lucky to have such music in our lives.

  • You did an excellent job putting this oldie but goodie together curleyb3! Yes, it would be great to be able to rewind the clock to better times, but at least we have sweet memories that the youth of today will never have, I pity them!

  • Thank you for your comment. These pictures came from the Lone Star Ranch in NH. About 1941 and I had the pleasure of sharing the same stage.

  • Many years ago, my neighbor Bob Compton sang with the SOP in KC, in a garage...that was when Rogers was still Slye. My neighbor left early to become an engineer...designed the first miniature rocket engines for AeroJet General...and when I cowboyed in '58, we'd hum and sing these songs whilst herding...the cattle fall into pace to these songs...believe it or not...now what do we have? Screehing American Idols...wow..I agree with the one poster...wish we could go back...

  • ffurgy, Thank you for your comment. Yes I wished we could go back to those days again.

The Sons of the Pioneers were always my favorites. We even used Tumbling Tumble Weeds for our theme song on the radio. About 1940.

  • Very nice presentation curleyb3. Reminds of when I and my buddies used to go to those Saturday afternoon matinees while growing up in Toronto.

  • Absolutely the finest in western harmony.

Thank you Southern people for siring this music westward.

  • hi curleyb if they ever wanted to change the name of their band,i think it would have been,"The Untouchables" 'nuff said.

  • Thank you for your comment. I aggree with you. They will always be the best.

  • you know what ? you Americans beat the Brits hands down with this type of sound - it doesn't matter how hard we try we just cannot create this sound in the UK

  • well done thanks great stuff

  • Thank you for the comment. Sons of the Pioneers have been my favorites since I was 10years old and I'm 85 now. I'm working on another Video and hope to have it done in a couple of days.

  • Excellent!

  • BEAUTIFUL... sends shivers down my spine, makes

me sad and happy all at once, sad for all the

good that's gone but happy that the memories

    are still there.

  • I wish we could rewind the tape back those fifties and sixties before immigration took away our fields, orchards, vinyards, farms, and manufaturing jobs leaving us with a deficit laden concrete jungle populated by hordes of Mexicans. Sorry but I'm from Los Angeles.. that's just how it is.

  • Right on Paloeroundtable. It's refreshing to hear polital incorect truth. I was also born in L.A. which has become a santurary city for the ungratefull aliens who bring their third world, filthy habits.

  • European immigration built America. But this criminal invasion from the south is going to destroy it. That isn't immigration, it is invasion. Thanks for speaking the truth. It is good to hear it!

  • Fabulous....There is still I think a Roy Rogers Martin guitar for sale on ebay for $3,500,000, plus or minus...

Anyone know the name of the song they sing in the film Raising Arizona, with no words, just great voices?

  • "Way Out There "

  • Does anyone know where the beautiful song "dust" went? It was on this link a few weeks ago, then disappeared.

    Wendl Ormsby

  • Absolutely Fantastic.

  • Vocal harmony just does not get any better that this.

  • Amen. These guys practically invented group harmony singing.

  • My Dad loved these guys. He was born in 1902 and passed away in 1961, long before his time. He taught me just how beautiful real country and western music could be. I'm now 73 and still listen to this music regularly. I just recently discoved Youtube and thank everyone for uploading this great stuff.

  • I know Lloyd's son, he was a local sherrif in the town I grew up in. He taught me a few things on the guitar when I was a kid!.

  • Loyd had a beautiful voice and was an important member of the Sons of the Pioneers. I met Loyd and the Pioneers in 1941 and shared the stage with them at the Lone Star Ranch In NH. Thank you for your comment.

    Curley Lawrence

  • Roy Rogers was billed under his real name in those days: Leonard Slye
