They always call it Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. But Ju-Jitsu is Japanese and always will be. Its the old Samurai way of fighting. The Japanese do all the ground fighting and there are many different styles of Japanese Ju-Jitsu.

"Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu"
is different to
"Japanese Jujutsu"
The Brazilian variant is developed from jujutsu , of course jujutsu is japanese in origin but jiu-jitsu developed in brazil through brazilian masters and its array of techniques and method of exections are considered different. All martial arts have common roots, its not wrong to separate them and call them different names. Today they are actually quite different systems of combat.

In the field, if the Samurai was unarmed or lost his weapon his method of unarmed combat was Ju-Jitsu. Samurai wouldnt stand there and do nothing and get slaughtered like a pig?! He would of course use his very effective fighting system!
