This is all very cool, but why didn't they install a wider rim system? I mean, this thing is supposed to navigate deep snow, correct? A wider rim would provide better weight distribution and keep it from sinking in the snow, while still keeping its traction, just using wider treds for its wheels....o.O
That looks dumb. If that was in overcast artic snow then it would be a fun video. Just driving it over the same hill of snow(slow no less). Must not be a very stable frame. Why are todays inventors geared like that. People with the money come up with the build of such things. but don't try to sell correct or even have the money to run tests in the right environments'. Sometimes not having money makes one a better idea and concept inventor!
Not sure what concept is trying to be tested here. The concept that narrow tall tires belong on wagons in the 1840s and not on trucks? As for the concept of narrow tires, look at any vehicle used in the snow, either wide low pressure tires or tracks. This looks like a failed concept. I do appreciate the fabrication.
@greatwhiteebola not all vehicles are designed to ride on top of snow. if your in rocky steep places you want to dig down to solid rock to grip hard. unless you have tracks, digging down can be a lot better off for SOLID traction. those are ag tires used in marshy areas. so no dont look at all vehicles' in snow. look at purpose built arctic rigs and you will see they look more like this one.
What is the gear reduction ratio at each wheel? I see you've incorporated the axle ends feeding into an individual gear reduction assembly at each wheel, like the military HUMVEE, which has a 7 to 1 gear reduction at each wheel assembly.
i dont understand tyres..if you want to go mudding, do you put wide tyres to prevgent sinking in, or do you put thin tyres so that it can get grip below the soft mud?
@95operation depends on your type of mud. if you in thick bottomless clay.. or mud digging down really wont help will it? but if your insloppy mud but very solid under the slop, well wide floating tires wont work will they, all depends where you are and what your doing.
wont hold a candle to a lightweight toyota with aired down tires. I have been snowheelin with some toyota boys that take trucks in 10ft deep snow. The name of the game is flotation not big tires.
@coqulation this is so he can get to solid rock. chances are he will be very far from home, digging down is more reliable as rocks seems to be very solid for gripping.
@3JGRECORDS rednecks to this and other races put ginourmous wheels on cars. this one could at least serve a purpose MAYBE. yeah it would sink. BUT the wheel is what 6ft tall?no more like 8. so it could in theory plow through whatever it is trying to get through. tbh would liek to see this thing being TRULY tested
@Baked4lifeProduction yer an idiot. obviously that tyruck is not built for speed. Why the hell would be be going 60 mph? it was made, with a wild concept idea and props for that, for going over and through things. Built somthign from imagination and did it. wtg samsoncnc. to hell with all the haters.
@SlothAlmighty you dont always want wide., clearly a diesel and very heavy. that takes alot of power to keep pushing over snow. plus digging down to solid rock is more relable. just look at extreme rescue vehicles they tend to be more like this. for every day joe schmo yes on you jeep you would probably just want wider tires. and no your stock jeep could handle that deep of snow.
Wide tire or skinny tire, traction/friction will be the same unless the weight of the vehicle changes... Skinny tire= all the trucks weight over a small area (more lbs/sq inch)... Wide tire= all the trucks weight over a large area (less lbs/sq inch) traction remains constant... You want more lbs/sq inch to climb a packed snowbank to cut into it, not spin on it
@jdasilva644 Just look at Antarctic expeditionary vehicles, or any polar expedition for that matter. The best would be to watch Top Gear's trip to the north pole, it's entertaining and educational (for some that don't understand the concept). Either, low pressure wide tires or tracks are best for snow.
@jdasilva644 Just look at Antarctic expeditionary vehicles, or any polar expedition for that matter. The best would be to watch Top Gear's trip to the north pole, it's entertaining and educational (for some that don't understand the concept). For the "Yeti" type vehicle (high GVWR) wider is better, for your daily driver (low GVWR) a narrower tire is better.
Think snow shoe for those debating the advantages of a wider tire. This "truck" didn't seem to perform well when challenged with hills, snow and hills made of snow. More of a Penguin then a Yeti...
@willbill2012 Got me there, what was your point? Regardless, look to Iceland for trucks that actually preform well in snow. It's not like it's rocket science, the concept has been proven already. I appreciate the engineering involved with this project, it's hardly a "Yeti".
The traction is constant as long as the tyres are of the same material, here they use slim tyres to traction on the dirt BELOW the snow, while dragsters use wide tyres because the super soft compound used can't take much traction per unit of surface without tearing apart like a rubber eraser.
Lots of hate in the comments here (as usual). Whether you like the vehicle or not, it's quite an impressive piece of engineering. Someone put a lot of time, planning, and of course money into this project. And people should appreciate the effort displayed here. So nice job Rex, I think it's bad ass.
Also yes they use wide tires on pavement because it is a high friction surface, you want to grab as much of that as possible... on snow friction is highly compromised so you need to dig in, not float on top trying to grab a surface that packs and turns to ice as your tires slip, you sir are the moron
I live in the northeast and have a truck lifted 18" with 40x15" tires, yes they slip and slide on the snow and make ice... when I put the skinnys on they cut through the snow I have first hand experience what do you have? your cock in your hand crying? stupid Fuck hole
damn, people say mini truckers have ridiculously big wheels lol. as a fabricator i respect the work that went into it, not my "cup of tea" though. it definitely looks crazy. nice job man
Wide tires don't dig into snow, they sit on top, spin and make ice patches and you will sit and spin all day... Skinny tires are better in this case unless all you guys are talking about wider "paddle" tires like the mud dragsters.... All in all I think this thing's pretty gay anyway, it steers like a forklift and doesn't look very capable of much besides driving through a field of snow slowly or barely go over a small snowbank, the spoked wheels look pretty weak also
@jdasilva644 your a fucking moron, why do you think people use wide tires in drag races? so they gain traction, oh but you might of thought they used it so they would sit on top of the street XD
@partymaster5boy Let us all know, when you learn the difference between pavement and snow. Until then: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."
@jallious2 wider tires are worse in the snow because they float an you want your tires to sink in the snow instead of spin. You get more weight on less surface area.
Please check out my page, I just had an article in Off-Road Magazine, we did a brake upgrade on Jerrod Jones' Dodge pickup, he did the article and I shot the video of it. The booster upgrade gives more assurance on complex grades, and severely cuts down on rotor heat. Thanks.
I would say thicker tires would be far better than skinny ones. This is getting stuck in the snow because they just sink thright through. Thick tires would sink less.
one question... why. another thing Im a ford man myself but I feel so bad for the dodge, giant bike wheel no fenders a cut up frame ugly thin tires I know they are better for offroad then wide tires but still rednecks like me look for looks and performance tall wide tires do fine in mud and some tires in snow not to look like a giant diesel atv I feel so terrible for that cummins i just wanna put it out of it's misery
Sweet truck!!! Just curious, what made you decide to go with thin tires? It seems like it might be better to float on top of the snow like the "Letourneau Snow Train". Glad to see you trying something different, keep it up!!!
@johnnyrckt actually mr smart arse the wider the tyre the larger the surface area spreading out the weight therefore theres less weight in one spot meaning they wont sink as much into the snow. why do you think when people go across thin ice they either lay down or keep a low center of gravity. dickhead stop trying to be a smart arse when your wrong.
@jellybeanmanic88 You are right! Skinny, big tires only do good in mud (especially mud drags). Several years ago Discovery channel did a special with FJ-80 Landcruisers going across the artic. They had huge balloon tires to prevent sinking into the snow, and long slider/racks off the front and rear to help get them across the crevices.. Anyone that actually wheels, and lives in an area that gets snow, should know this..... I personally think this truck is retarded...
@jellybeanmanic88 isn't the point of having skinny wheels to allow for the wheels to sink into the more compressed soil or in this case snow achieving better traction? Otherwise we may as well try offroading with f1 tires.
