  • 0:36 It's a prophecy! Mike returns for the 13th album!!! xD lol. I miss the dude in Dream Theater... I believe he was truly the guy that kept Dream Theater a HEAVY prog band. Great guy.

  • Good luck Mike... Dream Theater fans enjoy your music vision!!!

  • its a shame they're talking about the future, they wont be sitting there in the future really :/

  • i like this interview but i fucking hate kerrang magazine, their magazine is full of garabage like paramore, bring me the horizon, fallout out boy etc etc, they dont care about what good music is, they just care about what the new trend is.

  • 0:36 god dammit

  • can't believe he left

  • @4blackout You aren't the only one. I'm hoping he changes his mind. DT isn't DT without Mike.

  • Progressive old farts?? easy , Mike! haha !!

  • @charliedominici charlie, gtfo, you had your chance with dt and you failed. so dont hate that they are much better without you.

  • @Ggevorkyan There is no hate in my heart for anyone, let alone a band that gave me a great boost in my career. You sound like a very uninformed 14 year old so keep your phobic delusions to yourself till you grow up a little, ok? :)

  • @charliedominici much respect charlie

  • o giannis karras einai sti mplouza .!!

  • notice he says mastodon first ;)

  • Now someone is gonna shoot someone in avenged sevenfold cause they will blame them for the seperation of mike portnoy and dream theater justl ike panteras' situation!

  • good thing Mike Portnoy likes Porcupine Tree :P

  • Mike Portnoy >_< is the best!!!

  • OMFG is so handsome >___<

  • The gotinc thingy came from jordan showing the omnisphere software out. He sliped that word.

  • progressive old farts.... ouch

  • @espChris93 I kind of laughed at that. Ahaha

  • what a cool guy

  • A nightmare to remember, The first song on the Album Is very Gothic intro lol But Mike knows best!! He is a God Among men, So is rest of the band tho :)

  • My ipod is a 30gb, I have over 1,000 songs and it's only half full. I guess I'm just picky about my music.

  • haha.... the only way they could be a goth band is if they got bitten by vampires...

  • lol the gothic thing came from rudess

  • "...There's Only Two Kinds Of Music, Good Music And Bad Music. The Genres Don't Matter." That's One Solid Blow.. Dream Theater forever! \m/

  • At the pace they're going at right now, in 20 years Dream Theater will be death metal lol. Every album seems to get heavier and faster.

  • Happy birthday, Mike! Stay cool! We love you!

  • wtf why cant you rewind in these videos?

  • haha! i fucken love this guy. hes so awesome

  • Baha DT just owned Green Day

  • lol to compare them isnt fair for green dayXD(DT KICKS THEIR ARSE)

  • Why does he have a blue beard... ?

  • b/c hes a badass

  • Stanley Kubrick T-Shirt

  • 10 more albums! Yes!

  • btw Green Day is awfull too

  • Thank yoU!

  • Ha ha ha. Green day. Epic win portnoy and I will be definately looking foward to the 20th album. Prolly goin to be 40 at that time.

  • hahaaha Green day..very very funny it's true though..very nice Portnoy! i love you

    Dream Theater rock!

  • fucking idiot.... go listen to real music... better yet, go listen to real metal

  • i think your gay

  • *YOU'RE

  • more like the worst band in the world. A punch of posers with masks on for a stupid gimmick. There music sounds like it was angry 13 year old boys that wrote it.

  • I love Portnoy and Dream Theater.

The new album is a masterpeice.

  • yeah my favorite song on the new album I guess is #6. but the whole album rocks.

  • hahaha, Green Day xD

    Dream Theater rulz!

  • lol, luved him bashing green day...I didn't grow with metallica, though I like it. I grew up listening to the doors and a few other variated ones (I decided to go for gothic, black and symphonic metal) and well,I definitively love this band since I was 14 years old (a few years ago lol) and in name of my generation I say that it is a shame that they rather listening to crappy radio commercial music than dream theater...oh,btw,gothic doesn't imply to be or have darkness, just complciated arrangements

  • lol dissed greenday within 2 minutes LOL

  • Well whatever, the point is we all like good music, right? I just thought that was bogus, but whatever.

  • Well looks like I need to learn how to read to hahahaha!!! You didnt say I bad mouthed rush. Its cool man just know we all have our own opinions.

  • @Progmandrake ok.. and what are you. a patsy cline fan?? go kill yourself you tard. If you dnt like DT then why are you here on this video?

  • Comment removed

  • lol opeth isn't very progressive and Dream Theater isn't a copy of them, they do what musician does: they take their favorite elements from their favorite bands and put them all together to get something new and this is what came out. just because you can't appreciate it doesn't mean that you have to get on youtube and be immature and post this crap on videos.

  • Comment removed

  • i didn't hear anything in those songs that sounded cloned.

  • wow, your musical ear needs to be checked by a doctor.

  • Yeah right, a 10-minute Muse song.

  • lmao! I love Muse but all their songs are quite short and simple which I guess is why they are popular.

  • They are old farts!!! haha!!! I mean really there music is great but its old and sounds old school I think. Just my opinion.

  • and ive got nothing against DT, i just dont get why he would bad mouth some of his favorite bands to make his own look good.

  • man I want you to tell me I bad mouthed Rush?? I love Rush, I said YOU RUSH FANS, can you read? Look at any video any time someone say anything about Rush, really good or bad you cry. Read my comment man b4 you open your pie hole.

  • Why because he said old farts?? hahaha!!! come on man!! Do you know that Neil peart is one the most ispirational drummers to him?? Man dont be so anal.

  • hahaha!! true. but yeah he rocks.

  • Dream Theater and Opeth where awesome while unexpact and big elf sucked!

  • i swear you rush fans are the biggest bunch of cry babies. Every time someone says the least little thing about rush you cry like a bunch of little pusses. I love rush but really get over your selves.

  • I love Rush ALOT, but I still think that Mike is a better drummer than Peart. It might also be because I like dream theater more.

  • I swear your kinda gay for mike portnoy

  • I swear your comment is gay.

  • The cameraman doesn't know anything on basic shooting. the video is DEAD CENTERed.

  • from Opeth land all the way to Pink Floyd land !!!

  • I love that line... huge floyd fan so i like it when one of the dream theater guys mention floyd, lol.

  • that was kinda bogus, calling rush old farts... i would say snakes and arrows has a modern rock tone to it. they are still making music.

  • wah!!

  • Omg Dream Theater with the unknown UNEXPECT. Tha'll be awesome.

    QUÉBEC METAL BANDS ROCKS!

  • Comment removed

  • did he say "160" gigs?!

  • yeah, but now they only have a 120gb option, which i do have

  • Intro is pretty insulting, with a bunch of gay bands like Greenday and Fall Out Of The Closet boy being shoved in our faces before a Dream Theater video.

  • Amen

  • hahaha, youre absulotely right

  • @ShimmySystem seriously

  • @ShimmySystem hahah i was thinking the same thing... it's insulting to even talk about them in the same sentence as DT haha

  • @ShimmySystem hahaha got that right

  • Captain Bluebeard sure can play the drums.

  • I believe that it was Jordan Rudess who brought the Gothic thing up, and I love you Portnoy but I have to disagree this time, I would never put Black Clouds or any Dream Theater album next to any Slipknot album, I mean its a world of difference in quality and style, LOVE DREAM THEATER

  • well i think what he meant is that slipknot sounds like new music, so does DT

  • maybe, but still I dont find any relation, I mean Fall Out Boy also sounds like new (crap) music but yeah I guess that he meant that

  • :O he has more than 160gig of songs :L

  • Count of Tuscany s the best since, scenes from a memory! just a brilliant album, love the covers aswell!

  • I downloaded this album at first, I admit. But I loved it so much I deleted it and went and bought the special edition album. This album is amazing, and I love the Opeth comparison Mike made.

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with Rush! I love RUSH!

  • Lamb of god!

  • 13th album :p

  • if dream theater become goth id kill myself :|

  • Portnoy is my idol!!

  • god i love this cd.. and every DT cd man i take those journies as mike said.. and it feels awesome! and mike u may be getting old but DT NEVER gets old keep on rocking and ty for this awesome music! an as lord said.. yeh do urself a favor a buy it! is awesome

  • im so glad i have this cd....do yourself a favor and buy it.

    its really to die for.

  • "There's only two kinds of music. Good music and bad music. Genres don't matter." Man that is so true!

  • It is very true. Why deprive yourself of a good song eventhough the genre is your least favorite.

  • Almost as bad as Systematic Chaos. I really dislike the direction they're going lately. Very cheesy lyrics, and lacking on the instrumental side. Epic? No, Change of Seasons and Stream of Consciousness were epic. Dance of Eternity was epic. They're still my favorite band, but I only listen to their older stuff. I just wish they would focus on the instrumentation again. Their genius seems to be disappearing :(

Where are all of the odd time signatures? or the key changes? Wheres the complexity? :(

  • There is complexity in the new album, Shattered Fortress, Count of Tuscany, Nightmare to Remember. But I do agree with you, I prefer their older stuff. Listen to the new album more, It'll grow on you I guarantee it.

  • ITPOE and forsaken was awsome. i agree with everything you said except that a change of seasons was epic. stream of consciousness was awsome. so was the dance of eternity, erotomaina and all the older stuff

  • well, let me say, um, how could you say 'I'm a fan of them' when you're against their recent creation? you should not say something that is negative about your favourite band in this sort of public, where there are people who don't really know about DT and could take your opinion as real. well, maybe it's ok in some fan forums. but at least, it's not alright in this sort of place.

  • also, they are getting older, and they've always changed their style with every album they've recorded. how can they stay the same when they are getting older and see, read, hear and feel more and more stuff? you should be more tolerant on what they make, and play for ya. that is what I think a fan is. my English is not that clear so what I meant can be misunderstood.. but anyway, this is just my opinion.

  • i dont know why but 3:49 made me laugh

  • very good album !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it !

  • well i bought this album and i heard green day. like its not even really progressive. they have gained new fans but lost lots of the origional ones. worst dream theater album next to a change of seasons. IMO

  • LOL i like his jab at green day

  • Portnoy is awesome! he is funny on stage. Opeth is one of my favorite bands too. I agree with him on music though. he looks almost half his age too.

  • yea and i'm gonna see tehm both live in october =D=D

  • I agree Blacktooth this album truly is amazing. I think still they've taken a different course from 'original' Dream Theater, if there is such a thing but it wasn't a bad one. Definitely a massive improvement on Systematic Chaos (which was still awesome).

Best song has to be Count Of Tuscany. That song has it all.

  • systematic chaos blows BCASL out of the water

  • u=newb

  • The Shattered Fortress is genius man. I love being able to pick out all the bits. Plus they mash 'em up originally, it still feels like a new song.

And no TOT isn't the best in my opinion

Images and Words or Scenes :)

    2 best albums ever.

Stay metal people these guys are gods.

  • Agreed, Images and Words. But this album is gonna give it a run for its money. The more I listen to it the more subtleties I find. Especially in the instrumental version of the album. The Count of Tuscany and Shattered Fortress are both just unreal.

  • The latest album Black Clouds & Silver Linings is the great return of DT I got used to. It is nothing important, I know, but I have to shout it out - It is amazing! The are absolute musiacians and fantastic poets.

  • yeeeeeeeaaaaaaah!! go dream theater!!!

  • Hiya God

  • A journey from Opethland to Pink-Floyd-Land.. xD

  • Great album! Good songs overall (besides the recycling-frenzy "the Shattered Fortress"). Great riffs and themes. Best since Train of Thought.

  • The Shattered Fortress is great it's supposed to end the suite and does so nicely with recapulations of the previous album themes, and as amazing as TOT was Octavarium was better than it anyway in my view.

  • TOT is the best ever, but if u mix it with Octavarium, it is equal to chuck norris

  • Hey man the songs supposed to be like that.

Mike Portnoy has writen 5 songs. first one was Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of all Evil, Repentance and then Shattered Fortress.

Its to do with the 12 steps to recovery from alcohol.

read the lyrics to those 5 songs and you will see how amazing they really are!

  • Ofcourse.

Yes, I know all the songs. I have all their albums. I've read the lyrics.

I like DT primarely for the music, and musically this song was a kinda of a drag.

May I have my opinion? I doesn't mean I don't give a damn about hope Jeff alcohol problems.

  • i loved the shattered fortress :P mixing old songs into a medley with new lyrics and other new parts was genius.. as long as they don't make it a habit...

  • yep, man the fortress is such a mashup , but man, thats portnoys story , respect please, haha, peace

  • Ofcourse I respect his situation. Why shouldn't I? And the song has qualities, musically. But very often I think "yes, nice riff, but I've heard it before". I shouldn't have to think that, many times, during a DT song.

But hey, don't get med wrong. I love DT, they're great. I just don't think everything they do is great.

  • They did that on purpose. They're taking riffs from songs like This Dying Soul and integrating it into Shattered Fortress almost seamlessly. If they didn't do that it wouldn't follow suit in what they did in their previous four albums. If the songs didn't connect in some way it wouldn't make sense.

  • No shit?!!

  • I listened to the whole album and it is great, I loved it from the first moment.

But sometimes I miss this wonderful style of songwriting they had in the other albums...but it is really cool!!

  • i listened to the whole album and loved. I can listen to it many times.

  • Only Portnoy does the interviews :\ i wanna see Myung do one lol :p

  • hahaha

  • It would just be plain silence if he'd do interviews ^^

  • hahah he'd just stare at the camera. he'd like whisper "can i play bass"

  • LOL

  • I knew it. When first heard "A Nightmare To Remember" it had Opeth inspiration all over it. They couldn't have toured with them and not been envious.

  • lol at his blue beard

  • epic isn't it

  • rofl yeah

  • DT THE KINGS OF PROG!

  • FYI

JR said the gothic comment at NAMM while he was there. I think he was just reffering to A Nightmare To Remember during the first couple minutes.

  • Mike for me is the best drummer in the world.... and if Dream Theater turned in gothic or did some gothic song i cut my own balls with plastic knife.....

  • LMFAO!!!!!!!

  • BCaSL is basically a cross between Systematic Chaos and Train of Thought. Very cool, heavy album.

  • I agree, it's a cool, heavy album, but definitely not between systematic chaos and train of thought

  • yeah, maybe between six degrees and octavarium (IMO)

  • every dream theater album is special in its own way..!!! so is this one........so its better no to go for the rankings

  • Anyone who thinks this is their worst album has absolutely no taste in music, I think people are just upset that their little band Dream Theater is finally getting the attention they fucking deserve, and wont fit into their back pockets anymore. Praise them!!! In my opinion falling Into Infinity was their worst, this album from a production standpoint is without doubt the best. The music is full of complexity and harmony, and the performances are amazing. This is a top 5 album, no question.

  • ha ha mike just called green day bull shit basically

  • that's coz they are bull shit

  • Not at all.

He's just talking about the length of DT's songs compared to Green Days songs. That's just two different approaches to music...none of them is the correct one. Just different.

  • dream theater's songs are long but 3 mins is not enough to explain something thats why they fucking rock.

  • 1:20 describes dream theater perfectly.

  • I am glad they have 10 more years to them!!!

  • hes right, BCaSL is freaking epic. It takes you on a journey.

  • lol Mastodon is everywhere now

  • "If you just want to hear... you know, Green Day - you've come to the wrong place. (big, calm smile)"

    Haha.

  • It's for sale in Belgium already since yesterday, HAHA! :p

  • lol

    i love this band.

but the songs are a bit lengthy.(good for road trips) :)

  • fuck green day.

  • I can't wait for the next 10 albums!! ^_^

  • Great album, can't wait to pick it up on Tuesday.

  • I am 18 and I own all there CD's I LOVE THESE GUYS!! and I will be seeing them on August 28th in LAS VEGAS! where I live WOOOHOOO

  • OMG!! NEW ALBUM??!?!?! HOLY SHITNOIZDS. its always mike who gets interviewd

  • lol yes, new album. the info on it was released months ago lol where the fuck have you gone?

  • DT tour I'm so excited!!!

  • Old farts... how dare he!!!

  • I've heard it too, there are torrents everywhere3, I think there is a lack of keyboard solos, the guitar work is excellent, but I think it doesn't beat Octavarium, TOT or even SDOIT, it's sems to have the brickwall effect thet systematic chaos has that makes it tiresome to listen to. But i'm still gonna buy my copy, it's still far above the average of other prog coming out these days I think.
