I guess you didn't understand the term "PRETEND IT TAKES PLACE YEARS AFTER TDKR". Yes I've read the comic and I am very aware of how it goes, TDKR is still very early in Batmans career so yeah....
this batman was too much of a brute to be an old batman not to mention his humongous size. and the usage of a tank and even using guns? fuck this book was too much. but thats the dark genre for yah, always depressing to the point it makes you wanna stop reading but you continue anyway. if anything the prologue of batman beyond got it just right.
@EclipseHedgehog GTFO the dark knight returns is one of the best batman graphic novels ever. Depressing??? how is the book depressing, this is the BEST version of older batman, heck batman period. Maybe you should actually read it before bashing it.
oh and one more thing "Rubber bullets......honest"
This fight actually different from the comic. In the comic, Batman loses to the Mutant leader. But after meeting Robin and having a costume change (from his Blue cape & cowl to the one seen here) he wins.
one of the worst batman movies ever and the other one was batman and robin the one were george clooney was playing batman christian bail should play bat man 4 ever and Kevin conroy should voice batman for ever
I never really liked Dark Knight returns. The representation of Batman's muscle was just unfitting, especially given his age. He looked like "retard strength" Batman to me. Though it does seem that it is part of what would become the influence to Batman beyond, so I respect it's existence in this case. I also respect it's usage of joker's mentality and effects on batman. Other than that, Meh.
@Mamoru0Hasukage I feel the same. I prefer a distillation of Batman where he's willpower personified (which includes real versions of esoteric Eastern abilities), incredibly smart (in terms of knowledge & problem-solving ingenuity), has to deal with seeming like a badguy, but has a very strict moral code that he never breaks (even though he's always tempted to) & is basically a ninja. He's too clever, skilled, determined & well-prepared (in believable ways) to lose, even though he's out-classed.
I feel much of the same. It is that the frank miller batman steps far to out of bounds with what batman represents. That being: a man who is so troubled by his past, he can not get over it. He copes by parading around as a vigilante in a bat costume, defending the city he resides in from the outlaws that inhabit it. Batman is a character who uses all he can to prevent anyone from feeling what he feels 100% of the time: remorse, guilt and pain that will never go away.
@Mamoru0Hasukage Yeah, Batman feeling lousy at least nearly all the time is an important part of him. Taking that away takes away his motivation for being as formidable as he is. If he ever tells someone to not wish to be like him, he's saying it out of kindness. Most of top people throughout history have been messed up (Nikola Tesla, Howard Hughes, Confucius, Einstein) & the only one who I can think of who (I think) wasn't was George Washington Carver (who was extremely heroic & brilliant).
Indeed. Batman is a character who channels his sorrows and madness towards those who do wrong. He has a twisted sense of justice, but that is why, as a fan base, we love him. It is not the abilities that make the character, it is the character who uses the abilities I love.
@Mamoru0Hasukage Bats takes what would break many people and uses it to make him stronger, much like the mythological Heracles and the real-life Teddy Roosevelt.
Could use a little more Two-Face? Yea me as well. Check out this interesting Two-Face fan film on my page. Do you believe in Harvey Dent?! You will after you see this. It aint half bad.
I'd say your faith in humanity would be a little shaken
3. Really robin being a girl really hurt your psyche that much who cares what sex robin is batman has a partner named robin of which there have been 4 in the main comics ( 5 if u include the girl) does that bother you too people age and grow up u'd rather see a 45 year old Dick Grayson in spandex? Anyways clearly your simple mind can't fathom how revolutionary this vision of batman so y don't u just stick to ur Sunday comics so ur kinder
@huhmasta lemme break it down for you cause clearly your simple mind can't comprehend this intelligent piece of work.
1. Batman is not contradicting himself he doesn't kill them he uses Rubber bullets there was an army of pissed off teens with guns with real bullets u think he just gonna run out there and take them head on at an age of at least 60 ?
2. If you had fought the same criminals for over 40 yrs seeing them never redeem themselves always doing the same actions over and over I'd say yo
You guys are kinda right.....Wait no your not Dark Knight Strikes Again is shit The art was fucking terrible and Miller turned Wonderwoman into wonderwhore......and I dont care about your whole phychologiacl its okay to kill when yada yada yada morals whatever bullshit BATMAN DOESN'T KILL PEOPLE!!!!!oh and All*Star Batman and Robin was even more of a massive heep of shit.
Absolutely greatest thing I have ever read. So entertaining and awesome! I know many have negative things to say about DKSA but I'm still going to buy it and enjoy it, well try to anyway
I just hope with the announced TDKR animated movie coming out that DC gets Michael Ironside to voice Batman. He was absolutely perfect for this version of Bats.
@alucard624 I don't know. I think Kevin Conroy should do it. He voiced Batman in The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and a lot of other things. In fact, he's portrayed Batman more than Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kimler, George Clooney, and Christian Bale all put together.
So there's a few dozen bad guys with machine guns firing hundreds of rounds at them, and she jumps out of the safety of a freaking tank to SHOOT AT THEM WITH A SLINGSHOT. What the bloody hell? No matter the incarnation, Robin sucks truckloads of ass.
Im sorry but Frank Miller's work in The Dark Knight Returns was just...bad. I didin't enjoy it at all, the comic was terribly drawn, like some sort of shitty kindergarden water colored painting. Batman is portrayed as some sadistic asshole who hates all of humanity. Robin is a fucking NERDY GIRL. Batman says he doesnt kill people but almost immediately contradicts himself when he SHOOTS PEOPLE FROM HIS BAT TANK. I bought that book expecting great things and was severely disappointed.
@Huhmasta It is a great twist on a classic superhero. If you don't like it then okay that's your opinion. Have you read Batman Year One though? Definitely a must buy if you haven't
@lilmijo619 Year One, i thought about it but then i was sort of afraid to get it after my encounter with Miller's Dark Knight Returns as well as his infamous "god damn batman" quote.
@Huhmasta Haha yes very infamous but IDK we are all different and I guess Miller's version attracts me. Trust me though this is Batman starting off and so he's not some mean old grumpy guy. It is very good and I recommend you buy it. The drawings and what not are also very good. You can do some research on it a bit more if you want.
@MrWezlum18 Same here. Didn't know anything about the Dark Knight Returns before watching this. However, after having read DKR, I loved all of the references and scenes found in this episode.
@dude13zo I'm not a massive fan of the art in Strikes Again, It's too blocky and psychedelic and it looks incomplete, I thought the story was good though. Sure he's egotistical, he's Batman. He killed Dick Grayson because he was a murdering psychopath to rival The Joker and he nearly killed Carrie Kelly. Never read All-Star Batman and Robin.
@dude13zo In Strikes Again, Dick Grayson was a psychopath who murdered several superheroes and tortured Carrie Kelly. Of course Batman would have killed him! And if you're going to bring up the point that "Batman doesn't kill" You should think about the psychological profile of Batman. He would be willing to kill. Don't believe me? Look at Rorschach from Watchmen. Alan Moore based Rorschach on Batman, the revenge-fueled hero archetype.
@BrandonGotBack89 : Perhaps not his design, but his character's motives and mentality reflects the gritty "realism" that Dark Knight Returns introduced in the 80's and early 90's in superhero comics..
That is such a superficial assessment. Yes, Night Owl has the look and certainly the technological approach to superheroism. But in personality, Rorschach and Batman are one in the same. I'll give you the video again, showing you what I'm talking about. 3 Minute mark.
Naaah, Rorschach is a much more extreme version of Batman. Batman might be a bit more unhinged in TDKR, but he still draws the line at killing, i.e. "Rubber bullets. Honest."
Rorschach is a hypertrophic take on the Batman archetype, who was himself based on The Shadow. See Philip Davis' essay "Watchmen, Neo-Noir, and Pastiche", in Gray's book "The 21st Century Superhero."
Night Owl is based on Blue Beetle. Moore, in an interview with Jon B Cooke, says "Nite-Owl and the new Blue Beetle—well, the Ted Kord Blue Beetle—were equivalent." See Comic Book Artist. August 2000.
Now there will be an animated movie of Miller's Dark Knight Returns via DC, Maybe Kevin Conroy, Rino Romano, Will Friedle, Bruce Greenwood And Michael Ironside will be in it.
For those that haven't read the book it portrayed the fight scene very well however I believe batman was beaten on the first fight and Robin helped him. The second batman beat him with the finishing line "This is not a trash heap, its an operating table" "And I'm the surgeon"
@kylelifecast Add that to the fact that Batman kicked the Mutant leader's ass in round two worse than Mutant leader kicked his in the first. To quote the Caped Crusader himself: "My mistake was to try and match his savagery. To fight like a young man." It shows that while the Mutant leader has strength, Batman has much greater experience; the Mutant leader has youth and speed on his side, but Batman has cunning.
Huh. I was right. Sam Fisher is Batman.

Thumbs if you're going to pretend this takes place years after The Dark Knight Rises movie.
Also The Dark Knight Returns is being turned into an animated feature this year.
Batman Begins= Fear
The Dark Knight = Chaos
The Dark Knight Rises= Escalation
The Dark Knight Returns= Dystopia/ Oppression
FictionFanboy 1 week ago
@FictionFanboy I Don't mean to be a buzzkill but there's a few reasons why This doesn't take place after the Dark knight rises:
1. This book has Two-face in it, Two-Face died at the end of The Dark knight.
2. The existance of three Robins in TDKR, The Nolan film series had no Robins.
and 3. Bruce dosen't know who killed his parents in TDKR, He clearly knew who did it
in Batman Begins because he was going to kill Joe Chill.
so you probably didn't read the comic or?

Rorschach is a hypertrophic take on the Batman archetype, who was himself based on The Shadow. See Philip Davis' essay "Watchmen, Neo-Noir, and Pastiche", in Gray's book "The 21st Century Superhero."
Night Owl is based on Blue Beetle. Moore, in an interview with Jon B Cooke, says "Nite-Owl and the new Blue Beetle—well, the Ted Kord Blue Beetle—were equivalent." See Comic Book Artist. August 2000.
Then get YOUR facts straight, Mate.

@calvintoronto Ted Cord is based on Bruce Wayne, so you just proved my argument for me. Nice job. :]

...And, as in most such cases, the original prototype, the Shadow, is the most interesting of the lot.

Now there will be an animated movie of Miller's Dark Knight Returns via DC, Maybe Kevin Conroy, Rino Romano, Will Friedle, Bruce Greenwood And Michael Ironside will be in it.

How can they top this in the animated DTV film?
Joecbg100 9 months ago
Having to choose either Michael Ironside or Kevin Conroy as being the best Batman is a real tough call.
Archangel101576 9 months ago
@Archangel101576 I think Michael Ironside's voice fits perfectly with Dark Knight Return's version. Both great though

I love how the music is similar to what's using in other Frank Miller adaptations like Sin City & 300.

**SPOILER**
For those that haven't read the book it portrayed the fight scene very well however I believe batman was beaten on the first fight and Robin helped him. The second batman beat him with the finishing line "This is not a trash heap, its an operating table" "And I'm the surgeon"
kylelifecast 10 months ago
@kylelifecast Add that to the fact that Batman kicked the Mutant leader's ass in round two worse than Mutant leader kicked his in the first. To quote the Caped Crusader himself: "My mistake was to try and match his savagery. To fight like a young man." It shows that while the Mutant leader has strength, Batman has much greater experience; the Mutant leader has youth and speed on his side, but Batman has cunning.
