I grew up and lived in Alabama for 20 years. Why did I leave?
No one there speaks English.....They speak "Anglish". Secondly, I would like to know how it saves money to have thousands of people not paying to get their drivers license, or how it will save money when someone with no license and insurance hits you. Maybe it's just the businessman in me, but this shit makes no sense...Does it to you?
Perhaps if Mr. James learns to speak English using its proper phonetics and tonal inflection, then maybe he would be taken more seriously. Besides, in the USA, one has the freedom to speak whatever language he wants to at any time.

I've read a couple of the comments on here, and just so you guys all know, English is NOT the official language of the US. We do not have an official language. Should people living here learn English? Sure, it would most likely benefit them. But should they be required to? Absolutely not.

They were asked, answers, had to be in English.That is what citizenship for an immigrant used to mean. America has no official mandated language. However , when you fill your tax return, what language is it in? If you join the United States Armed Services, what language do you think all the paperwork is in? When the President of the United States addresses the public either in public or on television, what language is coming out of his mouth? As I have said before, when my family immigrated here they learned the language because it was what everyone speaks. If you live in any other country you learn their language if you want to live there. Believe me, I know. English is only spoken in some places as a courtesy.

Put it in even more languages, why is there only 12? There are many Native Languages to the region known as the United States and none of them are English or anything that even resenmbles English. Over 40 percent of the United States are Spanish speaking and within the next 20 years it will be the most spoken. 500 years ago, English did not exist in America and in another 500 years from now it may not exist again. Variety is the spice of life, lets not limit ourselves.

Has anyone noticed that most decent countries teach English? Most of the Japanese youth knows it, most non-English European countries do. Now... why is it that a GREAT majority of Mexicans in this country not only can't speak our language, but refuse to learn it and push to make our country bilingual? The purpose of the DMV having multiple language tests is for people who want to have a drivers license to have mobility in their day-to-day lives. BTW Tim James is an Irish American himself so I'm pretty sure his Irish ancestors that moved to America didn't speak English and dealt with the same struggles as the people he's stepping on for political expediency! Also Mr. James got wealthy from building an inter-coastal toll way in Alabama that he sold to a company in Australia....

when i learned french, I learned it with out learning any slang terms, but the french have them, just like any language so you shouldnt criticize Americans, because all languages have slang . I took it, and it was on a computer, and if you cant read it, they speak it to you, but it doesnt matter, because the pictures on the computer are still in english.

I've read a couple of the comments on here, and just so you guys all know, English is NOT the official language of the US. We do not have an official language. Should people living here learn English? Sure, it would most likely benefit them. But should they be required to? Absolutely not.

They were asked, answers, had to be in English.That is what citizenship for an immigrant used to mean. Today we're required to bestow it on anyone whose mother sneaks across our border a few hrs before a baby is born. Absolutely insane. As I have said before, when my family immigrated here they learned the language because it was what everyone speaks. If you live in any other country you learn their language if you want to live there. Believe me, I know. English is only spoken in some places as a courtesy.

Put it in even more languages, why is there only 12? There are many Native Languages to the region known as the United States and none of them are English or anything that even resenmbles English. Over 40 percent of the United States are Spanish speaking and within the next 20 years it will be the most spoken. 500 years ago, English did not exist in America and in another 500 years from now it may not exist again. Variety is the spice of life, lets not limit ourselves.

The purpose of the DMV having multiple language tests is for people who want to have a drivers license to have mobility in their day-to-day lives. BTW Tim James is an Irish American himself so I'm pretty sure his Irish ancestors that moved to America didn't speak English and dealt with the same struggles as the people he's stepping on for political expediency! Also Mr. James got wealthy from building an inter-coastal toll way in Alabama that he sold to a company in Australia....

@RASHTG no, it is the same, it is slang, you arent supposed to say salut in every situation in proper French. It is accepted, but it isnt proper. just like saying hey in America is slang, it is accepted, but not proper.

But what do I know, I'm in my final year in law school. I clearly don't know anything about the English language. I'm sorry, but you are wrong.

@jedimouse Not every anglophone has followed syntax classes and therefore can say that wanna-contraction exists. I know law involves a lot of word-definitions and stuff like that, but in syntax, the wanna-contraction is a very known phenomenon. Since I can't post you my notes on this post, I suggest you to type ''wanna-contraction'' on google and you'll find your answer. Sorry, but you are wrong.

@Clairevoyante so in one area, that being "syntax" in one field, the field of linguistics, it is a contraction, yet to everybody else who speaks the language, and under the clearly defined definitions of "contractions" and examples thereof, "wanna" is not included? Sounds to me like your exclusive little field isn't on par with the rest of the English-speaking world. I'm sorry, but you and your field are wrong.

how are you going to read traffic signs if you dont know english? Traffic signs arent printed in 12 different languages. Get a clue, this policy will make motorists safer because if you cant read the signs, you cant get a drivers liscense. Reading and following traffic signs correctly makes us all safer. Just thought i'd clear that up for all you empty-headed liberals.~~This radio announcer is so annoyed that Tim James isnt a communist like himself that he must make fun of his speech.

I took it, and it was on a computer, and if you cant read it, they speak it to you, but it doesnt matter, because the pictures on the computer are still in english.

and if i remeber correctly, it was only 26 questions, that being said, a person not being able to speak English could pass it, and still no know what 95% of road signs mean

Tim James: Why would you give any American exam in 12 laguages?? I live in Canada, a bilingual country, and we only give exams in French or English. It's assumed that if you want to live in Canada, you have to learn at least one of our official languages. I'm with Tim James all the way.

places to use your own language. I understand if you don't use it, you'll lose it - thus it is important that people continue speaking their own language, but learning English is necessary-ASAP! After all, my relatives who came to America had to learn English, or basically not be a part of society - I've heard stories. I'm sure it may have taken a little while to learn, but they learned it...
