@xfire7 Sorry to disappoint you. I'm not. Just an EU citizen. I guess you cannot understand this from your deeply insular perspective. But again, I'm totally supportive of the UK leaving the EU. I don't know if it's better for you, but for sure it's better for us!
The woman at the end is right, her views no longer reflect the mainstream political thinking... BUT THEY DO REFLECT THE THINKING OF THE BRITISH PUBLIC !!
She predicted the smaller states would suffer with the euro, but at the time they would not complain as they were being pumped with funding grants. She deserves great credit for standing up for her country and therefore is, by a long way, the strongest leader in the modern era.
However, if there's anything we can point out 20 years later, in this times of crisis (crisis in Europe and Northamerica, not elsewhere as they're doing pretty good by not ever following the neo-liberal disastrous dogma) is the leading role of people like Thatcher and Reagan in the unleashing of the dictatorship of the wild financial markets, the merchandising of society and human values and the progressive destruction of the middle classes at the hands of the -corrupt and greedy- fin. elites.
The EU has its bright side and it's ugly side. What was slowly build out of good-will and paneuropean sentiments as well as pragmatism to try to find a room and a common voice in a increasingly global world where Europe was, is and will continue to be a marginal centre of power as other nations and continents arise and become increasingly relevant in trade, finances, politics, miltary, etc... seems to have became the playground for German and French interests and policies.
They scorned her believes, reaped what she sowed, destroyed what she represented. They used Britain as a bargaining chip in Europe.....SOCIALISTS! Bitter, twisted Sheppard`s leading blind sheep, to the slaughterhouse.
This view which appeared so out of tune with the "progressive views of the early nineties" now appears almost prophetic. It was and is an extraordinary and visionary statement of the dangers of federalism which we now face.
I wonder if now, that guy still disagrees with Thatcher, while watching the collapse of italy, portugal, ireland, spain, greece... and perhaps the whole eurozone project! haha. Thatcher was spot on and one of our greatest leaders.
Margaret Thatcher, as a British Citizen I salute you!
Wether people liked her or hated her we can all see why she was Britains most successful and respected British Prime Minister. On this issue regarding the EU. I totally agree with her. She is right! The European Union is fascist, Evil, Tyrannical, Undemocratic. I am sure Mrs Thatcher has a copy of the Magna Carter of England rather than the Nazi EU constitution hanging in her house.
Well Said Maggie, shortly after this speech, Maggie was Booted out of Downing Street, for refusing to tow the EU line and for standing up to Bullying Brussels. It just shows you why our current batch of Uni-Grad career politicians won't speak out against the eu, they know they'll be committing political suicide!
Her comments on the EU are proving to be correct and astute. The continuing removal of national democratic power and centralising it with the unelected Commission in Brussels is disgraceful.
The debt crisis will end the EU in it's current undemocratic form.
As an Irishmen I can only feel resentment to the rest of Europe. Of course my bashing will start at home with the absolute mess and economic treachery that was committed by my countries government and banks. But the Euro was the biggest mistake the union ever developed. Ireland should never have joined if the UK and Nordic countries refused too.
@zmadlad its like the great famine all over again, serves ireland right for their treatment of british people with respect to blaming the british people, the current head of state, and the modern day state of britain for what happened in oliver cromwells time. serves ireland right!
@403766 I used to think the Tories were the only hope against the EU. When you step back and see what they do,they grumble slightly, and then carry on regardless.Ted Heath,John Major ,Camerons cast iron guarantee,I'm not paying them 10 billion, but I will pay them 6 billion. How about I'm not paying them anything.
Can you think of one positive thing the EU has achieved? So how simple is the solution, leave.
Even Daniel Hannon,is no use. He's just used as a vent to let off all the pressure.
This woman has been right about everything else she said. She might be right about this one too. The EU is for southern european states' corrupt and inefficient polititians. The UK can do better without the EU. At least under Thatcher it could. Perhaps under Cameron it can too. The story of the Euro is not over yet, perhaps in 10years time it will all be over and she will go "told you so. told you so. from whereever she'll be" :)
@pravo117 It's remarkable how her fears about European federalism turned out to be absolutely correct. The UK will hopefully leave the EU sometime after the 2015 election when the Tories will probably win a majority and not have the liberal traitors in government to prevent a referendum from taking place. As far as I'm aware, Norway and Switzerland haven't become 'isolated' from the international community so the europhiles should accept that they've lost the argument.
@DanielHewsonPianist Yep look at what is happening in Europe. Anarchy in Greece. Brussels deposing democratically elected leaders. Merkel throwing her weight around like a de facto President of Europe. Germany forcing her will on the Euro Zone.
@DanielHewsonPianist I think you'll find it's called the law of unintended consequences. She didn't know a priori what was going to happen, if she did she wouldn't have signed the 1986 Single European Act.
