would an embalmer be able to do a family members body? would they be able to have the mental state of mind to do it and or does law prohibit them to perform the embalming on a family member? i know that if i was in the funeral business that i wouldnt be able to.
@pedyusmc Yes they can Embalm there family members if they wanted to..just like everyone else in the embalming profession you seperate yourself from work and home life
@pedyusmc I asked a friend of mine who owns a funeral home and he said there's really nothing keeping you from dealing with your family members - ALTHOUGH - most funeral home's policies state no employee will deal with family members. Sort of a "Policy & Procedure" that could jeopardize your job if broken.
Type in 'Six Feet Down Under' for another You Tube clip, an interview with Chris Mann from this embalming clip, he has written a book about his experiences, it is really good.
@TheEmmington are you in mainland australia? i'm trying to find the same info. google australian institute of embalming, i hope that helps! if you're in NZ i'm sure they'll have the same organization
I started when i was 16. It's a thankless job but sooo rewarding, I've had some great experiences and worked with one of the people featured in this clip.
Ask what they stitch your mouth closed and what they do to your other bodily openings to keep the gasses and fluids from oozing out during the viewing..... Go ahead, ask them....
@Baldgol4 they don't stitch your mouth shut, there is a piece of ligature (string) tied between the bottom of the chin and nostrel (from the inside) as for the other one, a small cut is made just above the belly button and a spike is injected to stop the gas building up, also sometimes a liquid (purge) comes out of the mouth, then cotton is put in the mouth to act as a sponge to stop that. Any other questions just ask :)
This video has been cut short by 3 or 4 minutes from what was shown on tv? The book shown towards the end of the clip written by Chris about his funeral directing career is very good. Another YouTube clip on here titled Six Feet Down Under shows the 'breakfast tv' interview about the book, interesting too.
Not too much detail here, but the production was 1st class (as was the prep room). They must have a lot of cases going through there in the course of a year to pay for that expensive setup.
@wpniabbc , taking care of deceased can be as inexpensive or expensive as you like. Remember, funeral homes are available any time of day or night and any funeral home/mortuary needs a full time staff and a large overhead (includes chairs, facility, vehicles, flower stands and everything someone EXPECTS a funeral home to have ON HAND). I'd love to have free funerals to anyone that comes through the doors but I have a family to support and a business to maintain.
I tried for 5 years to get a job as a funeral director, and finally got there and I love the job, company I work in glasgow scotland also has the police contract and its amazing the buzz you get when they call, as we never know what we are going to
love the job the people I work with are amazing and the families we meet every day make us see that life is living and just how sort it can be sometimes...
Are people in Scotland commonly embalmed? I'm just curious. I thought embalming was not popular in Europe. Seems everyone in the States have their dead embalmed (just to 'keep' for viewing and the funeral).
@Niwram i believe the woman said "do you break any leaks when you put them in the casket?". i'm not sure what that means, unless they're asking if the body leaks the embalming fluid that they inject in them.
@akakatielyn Her accent made it sound like she said leaks. What she actually said was, "do you break any legs when you put them in the casket." Referring to people in rigor mortis.
For a more indepth interview with Chris who wrote the book 'Six Feet DOWN UNDER' see the other YouTube clip where he is interviewed on Breakfast by Paul Henry. Type in Six Feet Down Under to view.
this doco just made me want the job even more, i could identify with some of the FDs and how they felt about the job. I enjoyed seeing the inside of the mortuary again.
