@namco21gamefreak These ones are still in location - although they are never sounded nowdays. The met office came in with a media/text/email system instead which is worse in my opinion :(
@ihaterabbits127 This one is very much the one taken off of a local building near to me in the 1980's which has been restored by someone I know, and I know for a fact that the one that my friend has is definitely a carter, however the drum housings at each end on my friends one may have been replaced at some point in the past as the ends look out of place so to speak. Either way last time he activated it the local constabulary dropped in for a cup of tea and a sticky bun!! lol
@justie1220 Those that are still used are normally activated by the Environment Agency as they are mostly used these days for flood alert. The Channel Islands still use them for early warning in case of a nuclear accident in France, should any fallout from such a incident drift towards the Channel Islands. Most of these sirens were produced during WW2 but some are still being used for civil defence purposes. Most Councils in the UK are scrapping them due to cost and also spares shortages.
Gainsborough West Lindsey District Council has one for the same purpose. It can be heard all over town when it is tested. One of the most eerie sounds to be heard.
We have one of these at the volunteer fire station that I'm a memeber of(IN New zealand), and it's stil the most ear blowing, blood curdling, heart jumping sound ever. It's awesome especially on a cold still winter evening!!!.
@whatdafacundo Hey, im only 14 , kids my age say stuff like that almost all the time , ESPECIALLY when the live in a redneck area . Plus IT WAS 3 IN THE EFFIN MORNING , I WAS BLOODY TIRED
Put this sound twice, stagered , & combined with another video of an actual air-raid in Haifa(Hizbollah missiles; Israel uses German Type sirens), & put the echo effect with volume full blast...it is downright Scary!!!! Sounds like Dooms day has come!!!
out where i am we have this type of siren on a fire station which does go off sometimes and one several Kilometers away which fades in and out similar to this video. im in new zealand BTW. i just love these types of sirens
@williefleete If it's anything like in Australia then that siren is to tell members of the volunteer fire brigade to haul ass down to the fire station ASAP
Is there anyone out there that would know if the Gents Leicester sirens were also used in India, and Burma during WWII. Since these 2 countries were under British rule, I would think these sirens were used in this part of the world when there was danger of Japanese bombing. I would think that in India these are hard to come by but in burma there is a good chance these remain atop building structures
These sirens have been around a long time. Since the 1930's, Britain and most Commonwealth countries (i.e. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, etc.) have built sirens on this standard horizontal, dual-tone design. Likewise, Germany based their E57 sirens on sirens of the 1930's, and many American sirens were modeled on the 12 port Federal Electric sirens of the 1920's. Also, some American sirens were based on the British design (i.e. 2T22) or the German design (ACA Screamer).
"Klaxon Signals" do very similar designed current models known as the GP-8 and GP-12.
In the coastal low-lying areas of the UK they are used as Flood warning sirens, or for other civil emergencies, such as Gas-plant evacuation (eg Bacton Gas Terminal, Norfolk).
In New Zealand, they tend to be used as Fire-Station Call-out sirens.
They also appear to have industrial uses, with some users stating they are used for shift changes etc. but smaller models are often used.
@steamwally They ARE in fact made still, they are used in peacetime aswell for a wide range of things, like toxic fires, curfews, poisonous gas and general warnings.
@KyleAB5000 yes that's very very funny - NOT! I survived the Blitz in London 1940 - 1941. Believe me, when you heard this siren back then it was no laughing matter. Your joke is derespectful and in very bad taste, considering I lost my parents and one of my sisters in a raid just after Christmas 1940. Now do you find it so funny???
@Francis1930 I can't imagine being able to cope with what you had to...can't even fathom it. You have my deep respect, and may I suggest that surviving not only the raid itself, but the terrible personal loss at possible the worst age for it, may have been your own personal "finest hour".
@KyleAB5000 look pissant, I am from Germany, and lost about half of my family in the air raids in Dresden and Hamburg. BAD CALL mate. I am not a "sensitive" person, but dude, that was epically wrong. On a related note: I do however love how it sounds.
My grandfather kept one of these sirens after the end of WWII. He never started it because this sound remained inside his mind as a symbol of death. I do understand his thoughts. It indeed might bring dark memories to those who have seen the war.

In the 60's, all the shipyards and marine engineering factories on the Clyde had these to staggered start/end each shift at each works.
They also went off in unison whenever there was a death in any of the Yards.
I always thought that it was a fitting sound to accompany such a dreadfully mournful event.

@zexolus I doubt it, as they're pretty solid beams, and the things are bolted down pretty well :-)
