Fargo and Shine are two of my favorite movies... and I like very much Milos Forman and Mike Leigh... but from the bottom of my heart I know that Anthony Minghella deserved that oscar so much.... great film

for me, one of the greatest films in movie-history. only a few other masterpieces can stay in this line like out of africa, the unbearable ligthness of being, a passage to india, doctor shivago, children of the olymp. the english patient has it all...rip anthony minghella. will we ever see films like this in the future?

Anthony Minghella was a great director. I heard an interview with him back in the late 90's on NPR discussing The Talented Mr. Ripley, and he was very sharp. He had plenty left to give. RIP

It's really nice to see people that prefer Fargo to English Patient yet still acknowledge that Minghella's direction was unparalleled that year. As for me, I'll always love Fargo a little bit more, but English Patient is an incredible film, and I love them both dearly, and the English Patient/Fargo win is no where near as dramatic or undeserving as the How Green Was My Valley/Citizen Kane or Crash/Brokeback Mountain episodes.

thank you anthony. this film lives in me every single day. this is one of those rare films like the graduate or gosford park that are perfect to me. i had many favorite films...but i truly believe this one tops my list. i know a lot of people think it's overrated or that it's just a ball of mush, but to me, it's perfect.

The English Patient is a cinematic masterpiece. nothing from that year evenn came close to it. In my Opinion the second best, Best Picture Winer of the

90's under the Silence of the Lambs, which won the award in 91.
