Well he sure as hell fucked up this song, Joe South is the original writer of this song and he's the best on to ever sing it. Billy Joe Royal has that whiny bitchy voices, not that heavy, whiny, Billy Corgan "Tonight Tonight " voice, but more of a Billie Joe Armstrong "American Idiot" whiny bitchy, hipster, I can't control my pitch voice.
i actually like this version slightly more than deep purple, just because its slightly happier. deep purples version is awesome, but it just gives a different vibe.
I still remember when Joe and Billy Joe played at the Bamboo Ranch out on Highway 80. Buddy Livingston had a TV show and would put them on the air locally. Buddy would warm up for them out at the Bamboo Ranch. They served booze there and I was too young to get in past the bouncer, but I had a friend working there and he would let me in when no one was looking. I knew these boys would 'make it' someday. I think both of them are still alive, but Joe is now in very bad health.
Joe South wrote this song for B J Royal, and later recorded it himself.
The Deep Purple cover (1969) featured the "nah nah" chorus played half the tempo at the end, revealing a similarity with John Lennon's A Day In The Life (also 1967). Whether there was an "inspiration" between the two is all but clear ti date.
Hey Tommy man I'm 61 this week and I'm still playing (drums). I backed up Roy Head (Treat Her Right) couple months ago in Toronto. I hope you're still playing! Cheers!!
The video of "Hush" with Billy Joe Royal frolicking at a southern beach boardwalk with lovely '60s babes is gone.... can someone upload that again?

Kula Shakers cover is the best version of this tune!
Camelsarse 2 years ago
Yea, Kula Shakers' version is a little too poppy for me. I like the psychedelic sound of Deep Purple's cover though.

I like Deep Purple's version of this song too ... just as much as the original.

Gene Pitney had hits before Billy Joe Royal did.
