  • James Connolly did believe in world socialism, but that does not mean that he didn't knowingly and willfully go to his death as a soldier for Ireland. He led the Irish Citizen Army and signed the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. He fought for not only the political independence of Ireland, but for its economic liberty as well, to establish an Irish Socialist Republic. Socialism/Communism has never gone wrong because it has never been enacted, It requires democracy, something pretenders lack.

  • Shitty song. James Connolly laid his life not down for a country, but for the socialist world revolution and the cause of the working class.

This song tries to establish a romanticised nationalist image of this dedicated marxist revolutionary.

  • you need a history lesson

  • why are we still taking their shite. ireland is 32 counties!

  • "Ownership of Ireland by the people of Ireland"

  • Had Connolly not been executed but would have been able to continue the leadership of the struggle, he would never accepted the treaty Collins signed. Only a united and socialist republic would have been acceptable to him.

  • very true mate its a pity most republicans and ireland dont have the same drive and determination as him!! SINN FEIN = SELL OUT! rsf= UNITED IRELAND

  • Nice dream, Ireland was never going to get a socialist republic (which would have been a beacon in a monarchist and imperialist Europe)because the Church would never allow it. It was Collins military prowess that brought about the free state and from the Souths point of view theuy should be grateful for that. The English rulers were stupid to make him and the others martyrs and also to have ignored intelligence that the uprising was going to take place

  • If Ireland is not a socialist republic than Ireland is not free. A capitalist Ireland might as well remain part of the United Kingdom. This was also Connolly's position.

People don't fight only for the changing of the colors of a flag, but fight for a better life.

  • dead on,

  • Fuck off you toss pot spastic..Thank fucking Christ we didnt go down the socialist/commufacist route....

You are a gobshite, people in Ireland didnt fight to have a socialist republic....

The fought to get rid of those kiddy killing english murderers....

Dont warp Irish heroes to suit your khmer rouge philosophy

  • James Connolly was a socialist. You do know that, don't you?

And why would socialism be so bad for Ireland?

  • pass on that one, socialism doesnt mean anti religious

  • Socialism i could handle even i wouldnt want it but Socialism is like a virus that mutates to suit all kid of crazies murdering ideologies... Khmer Rouge,Mao,Stalin etc etc.....

    It really aint selling itself......

If it was strictly enforced democratic socialism then i would complain but rarely it is

  • Britain the Chav nation with the largest pissed in gene pool on the planet LOL LOL LOL

  • well it cant be worse than coming from a retard inbred nation

  • Well, I agree Communism in practice can turn out to be even worse than Capitalism.

Though it has to be sad that negative propaganda has been made as well. For instance, people would say Stalin is responsible for 20 million deaths. However they would count the number of deaths caused by the German invasion with it and blame it all on Stalin. That's like saying Roosevelt is responsible for 40 million deaths because he fought the Axis-powers.

  • Because they apparently didnt fight for a socialist DEMOCRATIC republic is the reason Ireland ended up an undemoceatic priest controlled state. Which has now culminated in Ireland becoming a money grabbing EU doormat which sold out the martyrs of 1916. You know thats true and you can abuse me all you like but its still true. Must also be conforting that the PIRA INLA et all adopted the kiddy kjilling tactics which say the english carried. Seems Ireland became more english than England

  • Well said.

I would call a socialist republic a christian republic for in fact socialism is simply putting christianity into practice: form one community and love your neighbour.

In fact the word Church come from the Greek Eclessia which literally means Community. So creating an Irish Community is creating an Irish Church.

  • You really are the stereo typical dumb orange prod arent ya LOL... "The church wouldnt allow it"... The fucking catholic church excommunicated the rebel leaders during the War of Independence... Did you see Michael Collins and the boys start decommissioning then and begging for forgiveness? You are talking through your yellow arse.. Those boys werent afraid of proven murderers like the Brits and they werent afraid of men in black clothes with no guns... But it would suit your orange shite u talk

  • You say "those boys werent afraid of men in black clothes with no guns" ambiguous, but I take it you mean priests. Yet again what a load of bull, in the incidents where priests confronted the rebels and they were ordered to raise their guns and aim, barely a man obeyed that order, so yes they were scared of the men in black. And you are the biggest dumb f**k cos I cant be an orangeman because I am not a protestant, which is a precondition of joining the orange order.

  • Who cares what we are LOL... We aint dirty kiddy murdering Brits LOL or their bastard offsprings the Ulster taxi driver murdering Prod LOL....

You could have really done with a priest controlled education by you are barely literate LOL... Dumb orange fuck ha ha...

"in the incidents where priests confronted the rebels" You make it sound like you know something but then i remember you are just an orange bullshitter ha ha,a mily retarded one to boot ha ha

  • Well damien(I dont know why you use the number 1 in your screen name 666 would be appropriate) shall I arrrange for my messages to be in braille as you are obviously blind as well as stupid. I have told you before I am not an orange man, my family are from Meath and Kerry. As a non protestant I cannot join the orange order(not that I want to). If U check you will find that what I said is true. also that the first person to be killed by the rebels in the Easter rising was an inocent 15 year old

  • @damiencarroll1 i agree a true ireland and lets not forget what greatbritan did not now not ever up ireland

  • Are you serious so the church excommunicated men who were executed? Sinn Fein/IRA has never begged forgiveness. Michael Collins wouldnt have had much chance to decommission anyway as a fellow Irishman murdered him. A reat thank you to The one man that made the first step to at least get 26 counties independent. Obviously there were men like you around then. FRom the way you write I think you should be waving the Rainbow colored flag not the tricolour

  • He wasn't Irish he was a Scot. He was fighting for a workers republic.

  • He wasn't Scottish. He was born in Edinburgh in Scotland to Irish parents

  • You have just contradicted yourself. If he was born in Edinburgh that makes him a Scot. He grew up there and served in the British Army (Where did you think he got trained?) He lived in Dundee then after marriage moved to 22 West Port, Edinburgh!. He became secretary of the SCOTTISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION. He did not go to Dublin until 1896.You cannot suddenly be Irish at the age of 28!.

  • wot difference does it make? he was a socialist and and an irish patriot. just because you're born in a different country does not change your blood or culture

  • if a man is born in a stable does it make him a horse?

  • No, but if you are a 28 year old man from Edinburgh It does make you a Scot, why are you peolpe so obsessed with him being Irish, he wasn't, I suppose Bjork is co she done a concert at the Abbey

  • does it really matter if he was a scot? he was a republican socialist and believed in a united ireland thats all that matters!

  • Wellington said this when someone said he was Irish, well I do actually believe where you were born has some relevance, Otherwise Cathal Brugha )Charles Burgess) would not be considered Irish

  • r.i.p.

  • James Connelly a great hero and man of his time. The song is a beautiful tribute to a great Irishman.

  • Well done rasherst!Irish ballads are a kind of history and it is a shame when there not based on fact.I like wolfetones but there history is a bit lacking at times.Still i nice song for us in this day and age, the truth is alot more bland.

  • i love this song ,my mother used to sing me to sleep with it .he was champion of the poor and the downtrodden .a compleat human being .

  • i love this song we must never forget the in the south the sacrefices these great men endured to get us freedom and to our brothers in the north i feel sadness because if we held out longer you to might have freedom to, i also feel that in a way no irish man in the south can be truely free until you are i dont want a republic i want us to be a nation we are all one brotherhood north and south.

  • Long live comrade James Connolly, Ireland's first Marxist revolutionary!

  • The British never bombarded the Four Courts. That was done by the National Army on Michael Collin's orders during the Civil War. James Connolly surrendered from 16 Moore Street, from where he was carried on a stretcher to the infirmary in Dublin Castle.

  • Collins was the greatest Irish patriot. Connolly was murdered in Kilamanheain jail by the English

  • You could have saved yourself the bother of a response if you'd read what I'd already said just below. The point I'm making is that the song is mainly fanciful. "A great crowd had gathered..." Not true. A curfew was in effect, he was shot at or about 3.40am, and the people of Dublin didn't know he was being shot. I could go on if you like.

  • sure, if you want to keep making yourself look like an ass

  • For resonding to another one perhaps? If you want to discuss then I'll discuss. If you want to be abusive then don't bother responding, I'm not interested and will simply ignore any further abusive remark(s)

  • You're doing a good job of that for yourself. If you want to discuss I'll discuss. If you want to engage in abusive comments then I'm not interested so don't waste your time because I won't bother to respond.

  • whatever, you are nitpicking in order to make yourself seem intelligent. Instead it just makes you look like a jerk whose snobbery is ruining a good song

  • Oh, I'd say they knew about it. The brits have a nasty habit of boasting about that sort of thing. Also he was the last to be executed (the yanks didn't seem to like of a dying man being placed in a chair and shot, incase you thought it had something to like with british generosity or anything like that. (Needed the yanks on your side for WW1 didn't you know))

  • who has got the chair now

  • o/ The Collins the free state traitor who got arms form England to kill his fellow Irish men

  • So if Collins was a traitor in your view because he killed fellow Irishmen (who incidentally rejected the democratic will of the people) Then what of the modern day IRA who killed fellow innocent Irishmen

  • They hit close enough to it (unless we're not counting half the city ). Still though I don't undrstand your point, is it pointless nitpicking or...?

  • I'm not merely nitpicking. If I was I'd find one or maybe two inaccuracies. In fact the song is historically inaccurate from start to finish. I can take it line by line if you like. And no I'm not a Brit. My grandparents (all four) were involved in the Rising and imprisoned afterwards. My paternal grandfather later became one of Mick Collins 'Squad' And yes I am that old :-)

  • Uqainius, my response to you went to the wrong place, but it's there anyway. Slán.

  • Historically incorrect words right from the beginning. James Connolly was never a prisoner in Kilmainham. He was brought by ambulance from his hospital ward at Dublin Castle to just inside a gate of Kilmainham where he was immediately shot.

  • course pal,you too I see

  • wolf tones awesome!

  • great video. r u a big fan of connolly

  • love this song this is one of the first republican songs i heard and has always been close 2 my heart really cool images someday we will hav freedom!

  • gd stuff!!
