He must have placed the bet with George Goebel from his grave OR right before he died in 1926. Just makes me wonder where little 7 year old Georgie would have gotten 100,000 to bet. my neck only gets red when someone insinuates I know nothing about music. Also, the trumpeter in the video is not fingering the notes we're hearing. Thats just my 40+ years playing jazz trumpet talking here...
Just a clarification. I am a professional trumpeter and a composer and arranger for television. This was a demo I made to get my band, "The Swing of Things" a gig. It worked and we did end up playing at The Skyroom starting in1999. This tune is part of the band repertoire. My Youtube page is BAT622 if you want to see the band live.I adore Harry and Al Hirt. This is my tribute to them. Played every note. Its the original score.Yes, its playback! and I had to cut my hair and get a suit
There is no need to get into a pissing contest about this video, its nice and done pretty well. The trumpeter playing whoever he/she is,sounds amazingly like James, no doubt, and it could be a dubbed track onto a new recording. All I was asking, was if someone had the original version of Harry James so they could post it. As for the "history" of the song, James recorded it in 1945(the year it was written) at the end of the war, nearly 25 years after Harry Houdini died....
I found this version to be very entertaining , and welcome the different approach. The vocalist was fine....dont know why some of you are so critical.
@DoubleD59 Shows what kind of ear you've got, old matey. This actually is Harry james. It was done as a promotional demo to satisfy a $100,000 bet between George Gobel and Harry Houdini that the average redneck couldn't detect the difference between two recordings made by the same artist with a video standin. So eat them beans.
Lovely!!!!

Whose idea was it to put such ostentatious MIDI muzak in the background? The trumpet is so beautiful in comparison and the vocals are so mediocre.

The instrumentalist sure outclasses the vocalist here...

Good music is an embrace. Better felt than heard.
It was so before the beginning I feel.

like the music. the singer has too much of a 'stage' voice.

ntrimm 3 years ago
shes from the late nineties which explains why she sings in such a karaoke style, poor girl.
