  • This makes me so happy!!!

  • 2:32 haha, cute! ♥

  • She is really on the point exact and beyond expressive! I just have to add that her pronunciation is almost perfect!

  • Simplesmente Perfeito!!!!!!!!!

Keith

  • She doesn't need to say Je veux vivre. You can just see and hear it :)

Most beautiful voice in the world!

  • Unbelievable great and incomparable! She's simply the best! And so beautiful...!

  • A glorious voice.

  • Hay problemas de respiracion

  • @martinmotter In your imagination, I think.

Gracias y Feliz Navidad

  • I can't think of anyone better in her category. Queen of the Night is a good test and she beats them all.

  • What's the disliking all about?

  • @LordMgls I suppose we have to accept that opinions differ and it would a dull place if we all liked the same things. it does make you wonder though :)

  • great singer, really... but please... Diana! this dress ... never again!!!

  • @lepusmatthaeus it fits the character:p And I`ve seen much uglier dresses!!

  • Damrau's high notes are so powerful... singers like Natalie Dessay can hit high notes, too, but none can do it so strongly as Damrau. If you watch Damrau singing "Quando Più Irato Freme", you'll see her hitting the high F# with an explosion of pure power. That's amazing, simply amazing, in her.

  • One word to discribe her: DIVINE!!! DIVINA!

  • @cryador Well the word DIVINA belongs only to the incomparable Maria Callas.

  • Bravissima!!!

  • She never ceases to amaze me!! Diana, what a beautiful talent you have!!

  • I adore all the gestures and facial expressions she does while singing!

All together it makes me feel happy :D

  • I LOVE her look at 2:32 XD

  • She is so strong and amazing at the same time, I love her simging!!!!

  • @mikica563 I couldn't agree more. Thanks....Keith

  • very goooooooooooooooooood-Brasil

  • @neyrilande Many thanks...Keith

  • I needed a rendition of this song for a school project, so I went onto iTunes and listened to it sung by famous artists such as Maria Callas, Dame Joan Sutherland, and Beverly Sills. While I think most of them were technically better (and I'm not the best judge, admittedly) Diana is just so much more real. When I hear her sing this, the message that comes through is not, "I'm an awesome soprano, check out all the notes I can hit," but truly, "I want to live in this dream". Brava.

  • Diana has breathed life into this "chestnut"!! She is so gifted in both voice and acting ability.. It's always a pleasure to watch and listen; when so many times I will close my eyes and listen to singers in either concert or opera.

Keep up the good work and thanks for posting this vid!

  • @tenorote thank you very much for your kind comments. I am very pleased that you appreciate this video and that of Diana's outstanding talent. Should you stop by again, please be aware of the channel "blauwolfenduro". This sorry individual is trying to get me shut down out of nothing but spite....All the best to you and thanks again.

  • diana has the most important talent: she has a bucket full of fun and while singing she just throws it into the audience. i can't help myself from smiling when i see her perform. (:

  • @CryingToLaugh A wonderful voice indeed...Keith

  • I love that she gets so into it instead of seeming frozen and stiff like so many other singers!

  • Wonderful....

  • 3:25 is UN FUCKING REAL!!!!!

  • I would give my left arm for half of her talent for one day. Next to her I sound like the Aflac duck...*sigh*

  • perfect®

  • This is sooooo good!!

  • People, you just don't know how I love this woman.. She makes me happy! <333

  • Absolutely amazing, Bravo Damrau!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @SimonBerger63

  • @kdallassoprano : Well, if that is so, Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti were never true opera singers - coz' they couldn't manage without micorphones at the soccer worldcup final's ope air event in LA 1994 or Paris 1998... Even an true opera singer's voice isn't strong enough for an open air perfomance and to fill a stadium without being damaged... Their voices are made and evaluated for opera houses...

  • @kdallassoprano what people seem to forget is that the space a singer sings in is also their instrument. There are numerous outdoor performance spaces that need no additional amplification for a voice. Unfortunately, not all outdoor venues can be designed to near acoustical perfection.

  • @kdallassoprano You literally don't know anything.

  • @kdallassoprano Haha. She's outside/in the open air. You can't bounce sound off of nothing. She is more than a true opera singer. Learn some more before trying to put down one of the best living sopranos.

  • @kdallassoprano Do you even have a clue what you're talking about? YOU try and sing in front of thousands of people, in an open air festival, without a microphone. I doubt even a "choir" of the greatest classical singers alive would be able to make itself heard.

As for all the criticism and the know-it-all attitude generally displayed to Damrau and any other opera singer out there, I think we should become greater musicians than they are, firstly, and only get the right to criticize afterwards.

  • @EndlessCompassion

It doesn't take a professional gymnast to see an epic faceplant at the olympics and decide that it's because the gymnast fucked up.

  • @kdallassoprano ...because not even a seasoned opera singer is "superhuman" enough to project to 20,000 people. You need to learn to respect the talent that is out there, because they at least have the drive and the guts to get up on a stage and perform.

  • @Emerson4Vet I agree whole heartedly. All the best Audra....Keith

  • Brava brava!!!

  • Awesome! TY NEVERATIME FOR POSTING.

  • I agree its about the music folks !!!

  • wrong words....... wow I guess even the best make mistakes now and then

  • I love this woman! She's insane!

  • very talented singer.. ;)

  • I'm in love. :') ♥

  • @Babs22h Ok, so I just heard her Queen of the Night and in that she has WAYYY better tone.

  • @ashfab90 Well, her Queen of the Night was also recorded somewhere where her voice can resonate. In this piece she's singing out into open space (thus no natural reverb, thus "worse" tone). All we're hearing here is her voice being picked up by a microphone which can do no justice to a trained voice.

  • @Babs22h I think her top could be a lot better if her tone was a little different. I don't think it's bad as it is, but everyone could improve something.

  • joy,joy,joy!!!!!!!!

  • She is a very good singer. I just feel she is lacking that ringing tone needed in the top...

  • @ashfab90 lacking ringing tone???

what do you call 2:47-249? or to be more specific 0-3:45

  • @ashfab90 lacking ringing tone???

what do you call 2:47-249? or to be more specific 0-3:45

  • Brava!.... She is wonderful!

  • beautiful--i am singing this song in a class, and this has been inspirational !

  • Best musician of singer today!!!!!!!

  • What a very Mozart like rendition of Gounod! I am sure her voice would have sounded superb in a proper concert hall.

  • Diana is awesome as always. I have to mention that I speak French and her pronounciation is an example to all opera singers :)

  • I agree that the dress makes her look heavier than she is, but it isn't the dress's fault, it just isn't a good cut for her. It's a perfect look for the song though. Kudos Diana. Perfecto par usual.

  • @dawnrood :ON your comment about perfect look for this song, I totally agree! As Vipate , on this site, informed us 1 yr ago,DD is wearing a stylized German traditional dress, known as a Dirndkleid the sort of thing Juliette would wear!!!Great look and she is in fine voice with brilliant facial expression. I like her.

  • @SuperJohnnykay But its in french O.o why would Juliete wear a german dress?

  • @RaWrZzZz :Sorry I didnt answer this earlier.Good point of yours Yes it is Gounods Work in French yet DD is a Bavarian girl & it is the sort of thing she would wear to enact Juliette.I know a lot of commenters have said who cares what she wears but doesnt she look beautiful wearing this. It probably helps her a lot to sing in character.jk

  • @SuperJohnnykay Good point, very good point. I actually love this dress, as besides the point as that is.Totally wouldn't wear it because I tend to stay away from corsets. They create WAY too much cleavage. Embarrassing!!! The fabric and colour are lovely @.@ As I'm training in opera (with a hit of training under my belt), Damrau inspires me too be both an actress and singer, not just one or the other. I can definitely imagine her using costume as a way to get into character.

  • @RaWrZzZz : Well all the best with the career. A chance to sing in German,French, Italian and even Czech!! I love A netrebkos Dvorak work, even though she gets criticised for her enunciation. When you have a close listen you can get that DD has great german(funny that) and french enunciation but struggles with Italian.A good career and an uplifting experience in listening for we the audience,jk

  • @RaWrZzZz But really, "Juliette" was Italian, not French.

  • @Detectivefiction Well, obviously -.-' Romeo and Juliette is set in Verona, Captain Obvious. The opera is written in French. Which is what I meant.

  • Diana, Anna and Angela and my night is complete!

Damrau, Netrebko and Gheorghiu respectively (OK and my Fiancée Annemarie as well - she's looking over my shoulder as I write this;-))

  • 3:37-the look on the conductors face says it all!!! He is thinking-Geez,shes bloody good!@!!!!

  • @SuperJohnnykay Is this Bertrand de Billy?

  • @LordMgls :not sure ,lord-someone will be able to tell us.The Faenol festival sounds like a great venture, attracts some big names, wide range of music.,jk

  • Brava!!!

  • She is just a delight to the ears and so darling to watch!

  • Definitely not her best, but still the amazing Diana Damrau :)

  • Diana Damrau est superbe !! Merci !!!!

  • The way she breathes on almost every single note and her mannerisms are a little bit annoying IMO.

  • incredibile!!!

  • super, wonderful!!! Appplause

  • Che bella!

  • Kathleen battle version is better.

  • @Royalorgans And her outfit is even more outrageous!

  • This aria really is such a major test. Everyone sings it, maybe because it doesn't go too high or too low. But there's not a moment for a singer to catch their breath or really set themselves once a mistake has happened. I never thought I'd say this but after listening to all these renditions...Battle's is the best. I know, wierd right? Damrau is OK, but she loses her breath int he final series of roulades and she is gasping through a lot of it. Bravo but not her best.

  • @FoggyRoad81 - I think Diana has done a wonderful job! Singing in a foreign language is NOT an easy job...and especially an aria that moves along at Allegro...! I have been singing for the past eight years now, firstly as a professional boy Soprano, that had a mature voice, so I was lucky enough to be able to sing a lot of Opera, and even now as a Director of Music, and a professional Baritone, I still wish that I could sing to the way that Diana does! Well Done Di! x

  • @FoggyRoad81 a high D seems pretty high to me

  • Expressive, communicative , real and with great depth....good job of it, Diana. Suggestion: come down under and perform at the Sydney opera house. John from Sydney

  • Not bad, but my favorite interpretation of this aria is absolutely Renee Fleming.

  • Probably one of the most emotional and well interpreted performances I've ever seen:] Brava!

  • With a performance like this I am stunned to see people having time to look at her outfit. Who cares? She is a beautiful lady with an astonishing talent for musical expression. A delight to listen to!

  • the best coloratura on this planet!

  • im glad i found this video... after seeing another video of her singing this aria (well... the audio paired with a slideshow) i was ready to dismiss her for a below par, overly breathy performance. this is completely 100% better. maybe she was sick for the other one? either way, this has changed my mind. :)

  • Juliette was an extremely passionate young lady; not so sweet.

Insomma quest' interpretazione è a dir poco schifosa. Il microfono??? ORRORE!!!!!!!!

  • I absolutely love her last note!

  • Horrible ^^'

  • @NoxCoolxJuliette

     I Agree!!!

Arturo Martin

  • I think I've stepped into the twilight zone here. People appear to be having a serious discussion about what Diana Damrau is wearing. Diana Damrau is a SINGER. She's not a runway model. She is ABSOLUTELY amazing. This woman could wear a potato sack & it would be perfectly OK with me.

  • @JRZGRL55 Agreed. Also, I happen to like what she's wearing, it somewhat fits her :P

  • @714bari Yes and it seems appropriate for the song, both are a bit fairytale :)

  • @sweetpepper36 Amen to that. I love her bubbly personality. Hard to believe she can pull off a bitch-of-a-mother in Magic Flute and yet, seem like she's struck in love and have a completely different personality making it look so effortless! Brava Diana :D

  • @JRZGRL55 I agree, in fact it would even be fine with me if she didn't bother with the sack.

  • Diana Damrau and Kathleen Batle have the most amazing physical and facial expressions while on stage, they are true Divas, they can wear what they like, still along with their fantastic voice their attitude on stage will carry you to another dimension, something that few can achieve.

  • I don't know, Masters, some of those disney princess costumes show quite a bit of cleavage, especially the more recent ones. Check out Ariel's top from the "Little Mermaid" and Jasmine's outfit from "Aladdin".

Re: Damrau singing with joy. Damrau is so good at projecting joy when she sings. Except when she's singing something that conveys joy or anger. She was downright scary as the Queen of the Night.

  • @puffsplus72 Ugg, should have been "conveys sadness or anger".

  • The dress definitely has a "Disney princess" thing going, yes. I think she looks sweet and beautiful. She does sound a tad breathy here at times, but still a lovely performance and she's as solid as ever at portraying the character and the emotion behind the aria. And she doesn't look fat, just solidly robust. That's her natural build. My husband thinks she's HOT, lol. He suddenly wants to take me to one of her concerts, ha ha. But she's pregnant now and canceled her latest engagements.

  • @puffsplus72 I didn't think of her gown as being "Disney Princess" like. It's Juliet from Romeo and Juliet. Plus I think she's showing more cleavage than a Disney Princess is supposed to LOL I really love this version of Je Veux Vivre because she is in character and sings with joy. In this aria, Juliet is very happy. And Damrau smiles the whole way through! Excellent

  • Really loved Damrau's version of Je Veux Vivre. It's grand and beautifully sung with a lot of passion and life, that's just perfect for the character of Juliet. She's in character even here which is not a live opera but a concert. Damrau has her great moments. This is one of them.

  • She is wonderful!

  • It's very good, such a voice! Plus, she has a great french accent :)

  • beautiful voice but i prefer Gheorghiu's performance

  • I love Diana Damrau.

  • she's kinda strident at times..

  • Damrau - the best :)

  • angela gheorgiu sings this beautifully

  • angela gheorgiu sings this beautifully

  • Perfect Juliette!

  • Sutherland singns french like a cow and totally out of style and Callas doesn't have the notes. Listen tyo it as sung by Janine Micheau

  • @monpitt500 if you find a cow that sings anything, let alone french, let me know. Then we can compare the two.

  • Oh she doesn't sing French like a cow but her pronunciation isn't great. She rolls her 'r" like italian which you don't in French when singing or speaking.

  • @lunargoddess2002

You actually do roll or flip [r] when singing French opera or most art song.

  • @JoelleHarvey Well, I think that Bizet might disagree with you there. When I took singing lessons, I was told to pronounce the French as it was.

  • why you speak, who is better?????every singer is a person, somebody sings like Anna Netrebko, somebody like Diana Damrau, and others like Barbara Hendricks...I don't know, who is the better, every of them a wonderful singer...

  • I just don't understand the excitement over this singer. She never sounds good to me. As I write this I'm listening to the live Saturday matinee broadcast from the Met of La Fille du Regiment and she sounds HORRIBLE. She's been out of breath the whole time and is really struggling. And her acting is so over the top that it's distracting (I know this is a comic opera, but...). I fear that she's just another product of opera's hype machine who really isn't that good.

  • You seem to be one of those who listens to opera broadcasts on the radio. Some of us make their opinion by actually going to the opera and hear live what we later may or may not comment on these pages. I fear that you're just another product of opera's knownothings...

  • Hey DrGarri,

I go to plenty of live performances. Let me know the next time you stand in line for 5+ hours to get tickets to the Met, as I regularly do.

Your comment is typical of those who don't know too much, so they just insult someone for their opinion. I'm confident that I've probably forgotten more about opera than you will ever know. Yes, you're the knownothing, and Damrau is, in fact, a product of opera's hype machine. So go spew your ignorance somewhere else "doctor."

  • @dwrd1174 Perhaps I do not need to wait for 5+ hours to get a ticket for the opera because I have worked at many and normally the artists enter for free when we are on the show, or our colleagues give us free tickets to see the production if we are not in it. Regarding spewing ignorance: I have already published 678 titles regarding classical vocal music, I wonder what are your achievements regarding music besides getting frozen waiting in line to get tickets. Diana's carreer speaks for itself.

  • @DrGarri What amazing snobbery you display.

  • Why should I listen to this adequate but more worker-harsh Diana Damrau when I could be listening to Anna Netrobka? Diana hits the high notes but it never sounds like love, only like an achievement.

  • I disagree. I love Anna Netrebko's brilliance and shimmering quality but she has no business doing coloratura. I do get what you mean but that is the nature of Damrau's voice. She has a lot of bite and pop behind her voice which at times can sound harsh but I adore Damrau's interpretations and subtlety

  • She is fantastic as Juliette. So sweet and young! Damrau's voice is not my favorite, but her acting is wonderful! I always watch her videos to get ideas when I am learning new arias, thanks for posting!!

As for the dress, well I guess she was going for the whole medieval thing but, meh

  • Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas sings this alot better than Diana Damrau. Diana did a good job but her voice is to slow to make the music not sound boring. Her voice movies fast but not as fast.

  • sie ist so herzerfrischend sensationell

  • Goddess!

  • Dreamy and young, THAT's a proper Juliet! Netrebko and her mini-e Machaidze sound so gloomy and out of character!

  • Fantastic! :)

  • I LOVE that dress

  • After watching this video, and later ones of her singing this aria...its nice to see how much her French diction has improved!

  • She looks like Snow White!!

  • Oh my gosh, her dress is adorable!!! :D

  • the dress is a stylized "dirndlkleid", that is, a german traditional dress.

  • They're not in the real world. xD They're in a recital hall, and like one other commenter said, when you're Diana Damrau, you wear what you damn well please. While her dress is admittedly old fashioned, (like, Medieval old fashioned), she still pulls it off very well. That, however, pales in comparison to her performance here. Magnificent. Never ceases to amaze me with her acting ability, while still keeping the song pure and perfect. Absolutely splendid job. Love this woman to death. <3 <3 <3
