@missjacko1 I couldn't agree more. She was certainly impressive. No surprise that back then, in 2006, this was to be her major breakthrough. Ventris was an excellent Sergej.
I'm stunned by Eva-Maria Westbroek's performance. IMHO, she's the definitive Katerina. Best of all. This is perhaps the most Russian opera after Mussorgsky. And she's Dutch, incredible.
@Quetzacoatl2 A little bit curious you would say that. This is about the only part of the opera that he isn't. In fact, Katerina even complains about it...
@Quetzacoatl2 Maybe you'd better watch the DVD of this particular production, also available in Blu-ray. Highly recommended. Then you'll be able to judge Sergei yourself.
I was just making a little bit fun out of it, in case you didn't notice. There are not too many people around the world who can understand exactly what she's singing here, because of the Russian language. Even if she would sing perfect Russian, I still wouldn't be able to figure it out. Still, I can enjoy her singing and acting, it's not only words. In DVD's subtitles come in handy. I'm sure she's doing the best she can. Ever tried some dutch? The demand isn't as simple as you think. Enjoy Eva!
In that case I'm sorry for you that you are a Russian. Maybe it's the Mzensk accent, who knows. Being a dutchman, I thoroughly enjoyed her singing. I still hope you could listen 'past the words', so to speak.
Dear, originaly it's russian opera and being opera actress she must perfom her role to be understood at least! This is simple demand to be called opera actress because opera it is not only singing and coloratura!
don't ya worry, this is opera in all languages, you have to love it without the words, singing in music is made mostly of vowels, the consonants are not made for music, that's why you can't understand, probably you hear the vowels only, the same thing with choir, the idea is to enjoy music and after that the words
She is fantastic....a shame she hasn't been heard over here in North America....the MET certainly could use a formidable dramatic soporano. I think she'd make a great Wagnerian soprano as well..perhaps Elisabeth in Tannhauser.
I watched the "Lady Macbeth" DVD for the second time today and thought the same thing. This woman is the real deal and could make a great Elsa, Elisabeth, or,
dare I say, Isolde. Good to hear she has already taken up one of these roles.
Well not knowing the opera or being able to read French I guess its ok-I don't know about it being acknowledged as hot. Eva-Marie seems very good and seems to be a good actress. I guess I have to get used to this dark music.
Adore this performance, Eva Maria as Katerina just blows me away. Supreme performances captured on dvd.

@visse264 I am yet to witness the glory of this opera in a theatre. So my ignorance is to be expected.
Tell of Sergei, please.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The woman's voice is obviously quite developed, but her acting is crap.

Exactly. I heard her as Elisabeth in a memorable Tannhauser at La Bastille, in Paris, on December 2007, and she was FANTASTIC!
Thank you Eva-Maria!!

Will start CD search as soon as this post is finished playing. Eva-Marie is a fovrite, but orchestra and conductor are great, also.
