  • Sometimes only the original artists can do their own song justice :D

  • Otis Respect Is Better

  • Popular lore has it that when Redding heard Franklin's rendition of "Respect," he was blown away enough to quip: "That little gal done took my song!"

"It was a compliment," Oldham said. "In other words: 'You got it, baby. It's yours now.' "

  • @TriciaR419 It's true! He even mentioned it during at least one of his shows while introducing the song. I heard a recording of this and it blew ME away!

  • Amazing song, both Aretha's and Otis' version are classics. Why do you need to choose?

  • @antdigger its his song, do your research!!!!

  • @antdigger He wrote it. She covered it.

  • 1:47 Paul McCartney (+slight time travel)

  • I always liked Redding's version better than Aretha Franklin's. There's just so much fire in his voice.

  • what a loser

  • @crapolaist otis redding do you mean because if you do, he was one of the greatest soul singers ever

  • Stop with fckn comments about respect to anybody, this is fckn great Rock'nRoll.

  • I respect that band ...mercy

  • Ah I hate the comments saying men need respect and women need love. I want heaps of both!

  • @mateyfacey

    I'd settle for a blowjob.

  • Man or women we all desire Respect

  • This song makes more since from a male perspective because a man craves respect more than a woman. Women want to be lovede more than they want to be respected. That's just the way God created us.

  • SEXY!

  • otis redding is fucking awesome

  • @GazzaToTheBeat Thank you !

  • Otis Redding lived a too little time, but he did wonderful music!

  • Mles Davis on trombone at 0:55

  • @diagreen hell yea, better pace lol

  • WHY?? why the FUCKING plain crash?????!!!!!!!

  • @krakauerdav5 plain ol' *plane crash.

  • @krakauerdav5 i dont know wether to vote up or down for this

  • What do you mean Otis Redding SINGS Respect? Of course he sings it, he fucking WROTE it. If anything Arethas video should say Aretha sings Otis' song.

  • In this version bass guitar is powerful lol!!

  • era il re del r & b ,troppo giovane morì!

  • sup

  • otis is the king of soul

  • THIS IS MUSIC THAT ISN'T MADE ANYMORE, AND THAT IS A SHAME. OTIS WAS AND STILL IS KING OF SOUL

  • 4 people don't respect this song

  • Original and best!

  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T WHEN I GIT HOME....THAT'S WHAT IM TALKING....

  • The RSG Show this is taken from is just about perfect!!!

  • Of course he sings it....he wrote it

  • Classic of the Classics!!

Thank you very much for the sharing this song CHRIS123445. God bless.

  • @TheForeverWorld,

This song catches fire. It's very hot. hhhhhh

  • Bien !

  • 'Respect'" is a 1967 hit and the signature song of the R&B singer Aretha Franklin, written and originally released by Volt recording artist Otis Redding in 1965. While Redding wrote the song as a man's plea for respect and recognition from a woman, the roles were reversed for Franklin's version.

  • Aretha Franklin's cover was a landmark for the feminist movement, and is often considered as one of the best songs of the Rock & Roll era. It is number five on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time

  • @RacinJasonInTexas which makes it even funnier since it was written by a man. This version must be at No. 4 on the list.

  • @RacinJasonInTexas You do realized that you're pretty much just saying the same thing that the person you said was wrong said, right?? lol

  • Wow, I never knew this was his song.

  • The only , "so-so, good video". Too bad, I like this sound, performance, attitude, assistance...Respect.

  • @bradpipal And I do believe that this is a live performance, not lipsync'ed.

  • @strandwolf This is all REAL!!

  • I love it when he says, give me, give me, give me, or is he saying give it, give it, give it?

  • arethra's version was our only option because of poor otis's tragic death in '67

  • this is a great song and reminds me of my youth hanging around clubs in the 60s.i have the 45 record on atlantic black label .

  • Man, this song should be declared officially as World Heritage if it is not already!!! This song is sooo f****** awesome. I could freak out every time I listen to it and see the video. Otis is pure energy and he enjoys it. It's so much fun watching it... It's so s**** sad and tragic he was killed in a plane crash that young... Hope he's better off wherever he's right now... Thanx so much for sharing this video!!! :o)

  • Respect is what it's all about. Somebody oughta give that a-hole preacher in Fla. that news.

  • @1bjhorton

you're so right. This beautiful world has been/is/and sadly will always be full of such ignorant people without R E S P E C T!!!

  • Comment removed

  • The greatest singer the world has seen. RIP Otis.

  • LOVE the horn's...LOVE the Sax......Otis, Sooooo Beautiful in soooo many ways....Soooo much LOVE, voice filled with Light.....Bless you brother....LOVE you man....Peace, Love, Light! :)

  • I prefer this original to Aretha's. It makes more sense coming from a man's point of view than a woman's point of view.

  • i love both version!!!

  • Love this song!

  • am always baffled by how a song that is sung by a man about his woman giving him some loving when he gets home in return for all he does for her, become such a symbol of female empowerrment

  • @kadyandtheconchords It's because this song was most famously sung by Aretha Franklin

  • @kadyandtheconchords The song was an original of otis redding, and was actually about black rights and not about his woman. i learned about it in my history of rock and roll class.

  • @chanchan702 how does that even make any sense?? Have you read the lyrics, there's not even anything close to a reference to black rights...

  • @chanchan702, are you sure you aren't talking about 'A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke.

The lyrics of this song are pretty cut and dried about a man and his woman. Aretha's version just

    reversed the situation.

  • @kadyandtheconchords maybe because it's not the same lyrics in aretha's version. go and check.

  • @kadyandtheconchords It's not about getting love it's about getting RESPECT! Everyone bought into the Beatles "all we need is love", but it isn't true. Us guys NEED respect as much as women NEED love. Female empowerment by denying men respect is not empowerment at all.

  • @kadyandtheconchords Cause a woman sang it. In a Diffrent perspective.

  • @kadyandtheconchords i think on the stax documentary they said he was talking about the veitnam war

  • Aretha or Otis? Aretha is great, but Otis is on another plane. Either way, though, you've got two of the greatest bass players on either track: Dunn on Otis', Cogbill on Aretha's. Both own bass like only a few others did. Musicianship at STAX and Motown was so amazing.

  • Chuck!

  • OMG HE IS AWESOME

  • i missed all the best cars, music, and drugs being born in 1980. fuck you 1980!

  • @DJM442 LOL, but you are still young. I am not.

  • Oh Lord! Why did you take Ottis away so young!

  • I like bith versions. Aretha is one of my favorite singers ever but respect to Otis for writing it. Either way it's a damn good song!

  • he simply is the best He IS soul music

  • so its a stax

  • a woman cant command her husband saying that a little respect when i come home. that is the original vassion of respect of our beloved otis not Aretha Francklin

  • Otis for president, screw obama!

  • Everyone remembers the Aretha version, and it's good, but it totally diminshes the beautiful saxophone heard here and the whole dance atmosphere

  • yo this song is the shit who sings it?

  • Aretha's version has been played over the years and Ottis's original and better version has been ignored. I have gotten so tired of hearing Aretha's cover, it is played everday on those so called oldies stations.

  • Look at the soul of raw unprocessed music......What has happened to todays stuff?

  • Mr. Otis Redding not only sings this song, he wrote it!

  • eresw grande otis redding!!! forever

  • Un grand merci Chris pour ce moment de pur bonheur !

  • My hero...

  • This is a great song period its the lyrics that make it great. Aretha or Otis singing it gave it the perspective needed to know that men need Respect just as women need Love

    Ephesians 5:22

We all should respect one another this causes everyone to have a better attitude toward one another!! AMEN

  • Was Otis ever honoured for his work? If not ,then why not? This is as good as it gets.

  • he recieved a lot of posthumous awards. i know he got a grammy lifetime achievement award and he was on a stamp.

  • I am happy to hear that he was honored.....so good to hear.

  • ugh, I want that band (gang) backing me till the cows come home.

  • None better than Otis. I am certain Otis was greatful his work was being covered by someone as talented as Aretha.

  • too bad he died at such a young age, he was the king of Rock n' Roll.

  • @fallone1996 He was so great! What a terrible loss. I think soul music might have survived in this form a bit longer had he lived. Today, it's pretty bleak and sanitized, but in his day it was all sweat and passion! Great stuff.

  • LET ME GET A WITNESS !

  • this song is just soooooooooo good

  • A key difference in the song Otis and Aretha sing is that the struggle Aretha is facing is much greater than Otis's. If you're a man married to a woman at all, you're lucky and should be grateful. In Aretha's situation, she's asking for respect when her entire gender is constantly belittled. Otis is a man talking about respect from women, no women can sympathize with him. Both genders can sympathize with Aretha though.

I'm not saying which I like better to avoid flame-war.

  • There's hilarious irony in this paragraph. I hope you're aware.

  • Can't I back up either side but still be on the other?

  • Comment removed

  • Seriously, what is with everyone? I like both songs, but throughout history we've undeniably seen women living sub-par life. In Greece, women were expected to do nothing but help around the house and let their husbands have sex with whoever he wants. We even had movements to give more rights to women. Elsewhere, women were considered property that husbands would own.

Also, i'm SERIOUS when I say this, I'M NOT PRO MEN OR FEMALE. I'm just stating how what makes Aretha's song different.

  • @PyroicKakisho It is different, and it's a great version. I honestly prefer the Otis version, but there is no denying Aretha mad the song her own and really gave it a kick. It's hard not to like both takes--when soul was soul!

    Peace!

  • belle énérgie ,a écouter le matin avant d'aller au boulot , pour avoir la peche !!!!

  • OTIS IS GOD !

  • Otis is good!

  • heard this for the first time today on npr's American Roots-thought I would die if I didn't hear it again. blows my mind

  • that chick at 1:41 was sexy as hell and I never even saw her face.

  • Otis kicks the shit out of aretha franklin. I don't even want to use capital letters for her name. Screw her. Otis is brilliant.

  • it was his song first any way she stole it from him.

  • @3194shi How did Aretha "steal" this song? She recorded her version of it. That's show business. I love Aretha. But I like this one by Otis better. Funny that as much as I love Aretha, her "Respect" was never one of my favorites.

  • j adore la basse derrière,bel ouvrage

  • Otis really rocks - have you noticed the bass guitar on this - very 60s. Doh. The brass section is awsome but Otis' ebullience and unique vocal make it Art.

  • yes... I like Aretha's version but the original by Mr Redding is so soulful

  • Diese Stimme ist einfach Wahnsinn.

Er ist und bleibt der Meister. Unübertroffen. So tragisch, daß er so früh diese Welt verlassen musste.

  • Aretha's version aint got shyt on the orig.

  • im1asshole - yes u r definately Aretha's kicks ass even Otis himself said Aretha's was the definative version of his song.

  • 1:41 SHAKE IT BABY!

  • He is . . . The Voice!!

  • its true the beetles did use otis redding style basslines and they used motown inspirations i watched a show on it :P

also for people who say kids these days dont respect good music im 15 and i love the god of soul otis redding hes one of my favourite artists of all time :)

  • he was my god farther of 60's soul...!!!

  • real music!!!!!!!!

  • This is the Reespect I prefer

  • Unforgettable..:-)

  • Gone too soon...

  • Otis... god how i wish i was born back then, i was born in the wrong generation !@!

Kids these days who like "R'n'B" should listen to this shit, so they can understand what real, legitimate Rhythm and Blues is.

  • @chrisp1987 I have to agree with you whole-heartedly. I missed all of this, and I was born in 1959. I wasn't really able to start appreciating this kind of stuff until I was way past 21 y/o, I believe. I got a lot of catching up to do, it seems.

  • @chrisp1987 i agree

  • @chrisp1987 Think of it this way, had you been born when Otis was just starting to make music, you would have to wait for years to hear all of his tracks. Plus, you would have to buy each single on vinyl. Now, you can go on youtube and listen to any of them whenever you want.

  • @chrisp1987 Lol, I say the same thing to myself. I don't belong in this time. :(

  • @chrisp1987. You weren't born in the wrong generation; your grandfather was: he never got to hear this. We all (and I might be old enough to be your grandfather) stand on the shoulders of Giants. Surely, Otis was one of those. Just a damn shame Aretha stole his song, and not this arrangement of it.

  • This was the bass line that the Beatles recycled a few months later for "Drive My Car."

  • yes you'r right, fucking beatles ^^, otis redding is one of the best singer ever

  • come on, that must be a fucking joke.

the sound of this bass inspired harrison, but the drive my car bassline is much better.

  • One of the best songwriters ever born!

How did he write so many classic tunes at such a young age! pure genius, I wish we could see more people with so much passion nowadays

  • There was no Otis Redding "version." This was the original song. Written in 1965 under Stax Recording Studios. There is however an Aretha Franklin version that became popular in 1967.

  • @grafix16 Absolutely right. I remember Mother's record The History of Otis Redding that this was on. I was four when this came out! Young people today just don't know...they think wikipedia is gospel, and it's as flawed as the people who put the shit in there...

  • @IrisMG I was 12 when my sister bought that same record & have been feeling it ever since. Gives me chills whenever I hear Otis, RIP...

  • @grafix16 Stax and Atlantic were closely intertwined, it's no accident Aretha recorded it.

  • Comment removed

  • @grafix16

i know this and I love Redding but I think Aretha Franklin took this song to an entirely new level. .

  • Otis Redding=my hero. Musical GOD!

    P.S. Aretha can eat it.

  • goOd

  • otis=GOD!!!

  • Undoubtably the world's greatest soul singer to have ever lived!!!

  • sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me

  • Don't get me wrong, Aretha Franklin's version is good, but I always thought that something was missing. When I hear Redding's version of this song, I hear what it was missing-A talented background/horn section. And of course, Redding brings that dazzle and energy to the plate, making this a great song, even if this version is live.

  • Aretha Franklin had King Curtis and the Kingpins!!! So I wouldn't discredit them and say that they weren't talented. I believe that this rendition by Otis Redding had a much STRONGER horn section. And they're present throughout this entire track. King Curtis was the only one ripping it on Aretha Franklin's version.

  • Otis was all about the horns..opening to try a little tenderness and satisfaction prove that used right the harp brings a song to life.

  • FanBloodyTastic,oh yeh

  • This is great but its hard to here his voice cuz the music is too loud.

  • Both versions (Aretha's and his) are amazing, but I prefer the original. Otis was one of the best singers ever!

  • Speechless!!!!

  • Greatest voice ever!

  • the better version with out a doubt in my opinion

  • i love this music!!! X)

  • WOW. Fantastic Voice, fantastic song, fantastic band, fantastic performance. RESPECT!!!!!!!!!

  • Spelling please

  • Otis' performances always brought excitement to the stage! He always gave 100%.
