I don't think making your own dolls is sad at all. I'm sure it's pretty satisfying to look at a beautiful doll and say "wow, I made that. I'm awsome" It's a great skill...A skill that I'm going to altleast attempt to do.
Drying: I have forced air heat, so in the winter, parts just get set on a rack, over a register. When the heat isn't on, I have a cardboard pox with a hole in the side for one of those old soft bonnet style hairdryers to plug into. They are still out there at thrift stores, and very quiet!
It's not sad making your own dolls. Creative outlet. I make my own plushie. Anyway, this looks like something I'll have to try when I get the money to buy what I need
You are awesome and very funny, I love your videos, I was smiling and LOL with your little jokes and the stories of your childhood; I have a brother (a mean one, hahaha) and he did a lot of stuff to his toys too. Thanks for sharing, now I know why Lati dolls are very expensive.
@ZenReagan I'm sorry, but I can't take commissions on dolls. the process would be extremely expensive and time consuming. I have a full time job on top of the dolls, as well as other hobbies i enjoy. My newest doll, Lagoon, will be up for pre-order soon tho! I'll try to make a post here when she's ready!
Hi batchix :D AWESOME CHANNEL! I find bjd's very interesting and have been watching your deviant art page for quite some time now. I currently have a little experience with super sculpey. I find it interesting that you bake your air dry clay :D its nice to know that the drying process can be sped up. I was wondering is it toxic when baked?
can you continue with this doll and show us viewers..well everything? Like every step of the process. I've been wanting a BJD for a few years now, but because of costs of school and not enough income, i haven't been able to buy one. Your videos are very helpful and i would love to make one. If you can teach us how to fully make one, that would be amazing. You are so talented and i find that your tutorials are much easier to understand than some others. thank you for everything!!!!
@AnimeFanGirl24 if you want a step by step, check out Noah's Doll Gallery. there's a great tutorial there. :3 as for other tutorials... i'll try sometime later, but right now i don't have time to do it. i'm sorry! :< casting a doll, from start to finish, costs as much or more than buying a doll. I think i've spent about $700 on Lagoon(who's only about 42cm tall!), and that's not counting the cost of getting her professionally cast.
@giarose451 i'm not sure... i haven't worked with that before. the clay needs to be hard and sandable when dry. If it's not you won't be able to string or clean it. you can order paperclay on-line, or polymer clays work as well.
@giarose451 I tried that. No. It's horrible for BJDs. Excellent for making solid figures, but nothing hollow because even after it dries its still really soft. I've heard Sculpey clay works best if you can't get paper clay, and its as readily available as model magic :3 I still haven't gotten any though o:
@LifesMineLiveOn You can keep adding to the paperclay as much as you want, let it dry and go back and sand and shape it! Once you get to the stage where you prime it it gets much harder, however.
The doll isn't done, but i lost a lot of footage with a camera error... so i haven't wanted to work on it. got discouraged!
paperclay is very delicate when dry and the finished doll isn't something you can really play with. I take the paperclay doll, make a silicon mold and then make resin casts when i'm done. :3
Do the dolls you make out of the paper clay turn out the same as the Asian BJD's that are out of resin? Or do you end up putting resin on this in the end? Does it break easily? Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH for doing these videos! It's really helpful to see how you handle the paperclay. You're like me in that you prefer to work dry and carve.
Choosing apoxie to make my doll body was a mistake, I should have used all paperclay. If my project continues to drag on at the pace it has, I may have to start over again with paperclay... and that would suck. Muchly. T3T
Your robo girl is SO CUTE, I love her proportions and curves. Look forward to seeing her finished. :D I wish you luck~

Observing the work upside down, or in a mirror helps to see inaccuracies in symmetry, too.

What are you using as the core for the head and legs? carved foam? I would LOOVEE to learn more!!!!!! please message me if you can!
schtickl 2 months ago
@schtickl drinking straws. :3 you don't want to heat foam, it will give off toxic fumes. Straws will get bendy but will not melt at that low temp.

what do u do after u have "baked" the clay? do u put on more and more so u get the shape u want.. (just had to ask)
AND how do u get the straws and the carton out?
and one more thing.. is the BJD done? if u got a pic somewhere i would really want to see how it turned out :D

The two segments have cleared up a TON of questions I've had on getting started, they makes more than enough sense.
Thanks for producing these videos!
