  • 3:36, Irish kid reading the Godfather.

  • Ahhh...back in the good old days flying was a first class experience (even in coach!)

Now, everybody is treated as a potential terrorist. Back then, you used to get a genuine, "welcome aboard!" and then were personally shown to your seat. Now, some fat slag in a way-too-tight uniform grunts at you and points in some general direction to the rear of the plane. Food? there is none. Movies? bring your own. In other words...fly the flippin plane yourself!

  • I remember seeing the 747's take off from our back garden in ballygall road MID 1970,S. Mighty aircraft still low in the sky as we saw them 2-3 miles from EIDW.

  • great video,i used to watch the aer lingus 747 take off from dublin with my dad.i never got to fly on one great to see the inside of one

  • Thats the old-school 747 cockpit. Thats when pilots worked and had a flight engineers

  • economy class back then was like heaven! Spacious seats, lots of leg room, and amazing dining and a bar! Also that huge TV! Most airlines have completely changed that, but aer lingus still have the customer at its top priority

  • Great video!!! Any more footage of EI 747's lying around? My love of flying comes entirely from flying EI 747's.

  • Captain Aidan Quigley is a lovely man and he did a great job with this commentary xxx

  • Class stuff...its amazing to note that most of the men, even in economy, were wearing shirt and ties...because in 1970/80's Ireland you had to have a fair bit of cash to fly stateside...seeing as the unemployment rate was sky high and income tax was at 40-50% i'd heard from some older people at work. During that 'celtic tiger'...every tom, dick and harry flew on planes which made it a bit less of a luxury with packed flights, but i can now see it returning to those 70's times..with everything.

  • nope not with ryanair out there they have brought down the fares so everyone can fly nowadays they are even looking into branching out into long haul. if ba and aer lingus dont start to cut costs dramatically they will be out of buisness very soon

  • @44madhatter

Here here, €900 to Orlando with Aer Lingus absolute robbery, €550 with virgin. Would love to see Ryanair do longhaul

  • that's buisness class on aer lingus now.

  • haha, nah credit where credits due, they've dramatically improved their business offering in the last few months and its finally in line with international standards

  • What a great upload...Thanks

  • OMG They let u choose options on food. Not even on 1st class do that nowadays. Gee that was class, i guess traveling on 747 during the 70's was exciting. Trips have lost their excitement with creepy food and standard seats.

  • whats the name of the traditional music at 2:34

  • sounds like the group "Planxty" ....popular in the 70's

  • lol its soooooooooo old

  • nice vid..how many 747s did aer lingus have or how many do they have....was that a 747-200 or what??

  • they had 3 they were all 747 100s

  • Does anyone know what the reg of this 747 was? EI ? doing a bit of research...

  • EI-BED i think

  • EI-ASJ

  • There were not many people on board, lots of empty seats.

  • thats why aer lingus got rid of the 747s because they created to much capacity for Ireland where there is not as much demand therefore no need for such a large aircraft.

  • How things have changed!! Kind of....economy on EI transatlantic is still pretty bad...

  • what year was this ????

  • Given the clothes, the hair styles, and the mention of "8 Track", I would say this had to be sometime in the mid 1970's. Although Aer Lingus did fly the 747-100 up until 1995 when it was replaced by the A-330.

  • This would have been the eighties as Aer Lingus Cabin Crew only wore those uniforms in the 1980's.

  • 1971/72

  • Thank you for posting this video. Lots of memories to say the least!

Aer Lingus flew the 747-100 version which was the first 747 type launched back in 1969. While a very safe and reliable aircraft, she simply became too old and no longer fuel efficient.

Aer Lingus replaced her in 1995 with the Airbus A330 which is a very fine aircraft and much more easy on the petrol.

Aer Lingus has moved to an all Airbus Fleet simply because it is easier from an mechanical efficiency standpoint.

  • True

  • Caviar in Premier. Wish I flew back then!

    Nice lounge upstairs too.

  • Yeah it would have been great. wasn't Premier back then but, Aer Lingus had Economy, Business and First before the A330's came into service at which point First was done away with and Business became Premier.

  • chek out my flight sim vid of this aircraft pls

    5/5

  • check out that leg room in econ! you can only dream of that much leg room today :(

  • Aer Lingus still give you about the same in Economy today.

  • what tv program was this??? looks good ;)

  • think it was rte news

  • Before I saw this on T.V (about 1 and a 1/2 years ago)I didn't know Aer Lingus ever had any jumbos. Why don't they anymore?

  • Unfortunately, we've sold all the Boeings. Now it's mostly A330's and A320's. I've heard that there's one BAE, but I've never seen it myself, for some reason.

  • Were they not fuel efficient or something?

  • The fuel efficiency, cost of maintenance and other services, planes were too old, people complained about lack of comfort etc. Lots of different reasons. I've also heard somewhere that Airbus suggested some kind of a deal to Aer Lingus. But this was long before I started to fly. No one ever tells me anything.

  • Lack of comfort???

  • Yes, I've heard comments like that, believe it or not. I was surprised myself...

  • You only have to see those business seats to know that they weren't comfy, but economy still looks O.K on the grand scale of things

  • 3:11-3:18,extremley rare fottage of the first class area in the upper deck of an EI 747!

  • Oh how air travel has changed. NOw the a380 is aloft, with real beds, PTV, etc.

  • When was this made? I'm guessing early 70's. From the tv station logo, it looks like it was repeated in recent years. Pity I missed it.

  • Flying a 747 takes immense intelligence, cool and courage. Notice how this Irish 747 pilot is charming, very reasonable and friendly. If that was a BA pilot he would have a cylinder stuck up his ass with plumns in his mouth treating passengers especially in economy as "scum". Aer Lingus classy and friendly.

  • Good Man. I entirely agree with you

  • @PRICEJAMES

Whatever, BA pilots are calm and professional, so who cares how they talk?

  • @PRICEJAMES I agree with you but idoubt all BA cabin crew are a bunch of pricks but i love aer lingus so!

  • Oh those were the days. The days when it cost a small fortune to fly but you didn't really care. I really miss those AL 747's too. The Airbus bus just doesn't compare.

  • I'm an Irishman living in Sydney with great pride for those 747's. Hence the name

  • Brilliant video - Looks like great service aboard the "Irish Flag carrier" as it was. Unfortunately with the low fares brand service isn't as great so I would like to see AL upgrade to a 'full service' airline again for long-haul routes. Still a great way to fly though.

  • Graet video thanks, i would love to flown on a EI 747.

  • We don't fly these anymore. We fly mostly A320's for medium and short routes and the A330's for the longer routes. I fly A330-200 and my route is usually Dublin - Chicago. (but I'm not a captain yet). By the way, what does StalinsKnights mean?

  • There's nothing like flying on the Boeing 747 when EI had the 100 series - It's a pity we didn't upgrade them to the 300 or 400 series - the comfort level is fantastic while the Airbus A330 is very cramped - I don't EI will go back to the 747's now since they've placed orders for the new Airbus A350

  • Excellent footage they were an enormous aircraft, the airbus is crammed full of seats no real character. The jumbo does what it says on the tin!!

  • Amazing!

  • Great video! The Aer Lingus 747 was one classy aircraft.
