RFID does not work in people. Every test has failed because it cant work near water. Body is over 90% water. In addition anyone with 1/2 a brain knows that RFID will never be needed -why? People carry cell phones willingly and every cell phone is tracked today. If your scared of being tracked then give away your cell phone - so? Keeping it yes?

Relax guys - I did not suggest idiots would not try the technology. I said clearly it wont work. As of today all the test have failed (chips can not do as they claim) and both CEO's have left for greener pastures. What is left of management is obligated to branch out into OTHER technologies to keep from being sued by existing investors. In 2006 the chip looks inevitable (but tech did not work). In August of 2009 the Gov pulls the chip off the market (Chip did not work). Within that time the CEO and other savvy businessmen have revived and shut down the technology to simply pocket Gov money. RFID doesn't work like that. RFID sends the signal out, and the scanners read the signal. Unless the signal is amplified at the source, it cannot be read from farther than a few feet.

thats stupid. bar codes need to be scanned with a laser and be in a database. RFID can scan you from farther away or if you walk through a doorway. or if you are trying to hide an RFID scanner could be flown over and find you. a bar code is for inventory only use.

a bar code scanner has a very short range of hit or miss. an RFID could in theory be expanded to sattelite or UAV. helicopter with a higher power scanner. and its an area not a specific point like a bar code. and yes cameras are everywhere most are closed circuit so just the store is watching not big brother.

The RFID is too weak to be read from space though. If an RFID could be read from space, there's nothing stopping a bar code from being read from space. RFID's are extremely weak and can only be read from a short distance.

RFID would need a concentraited high powered scanner. a bar code needs an optical laser that could easily be manipulated by turing your bar code upside down. then there is no way to read it. you cant hide an implanted RFID chip. in THEORY and RFID could be used from space/air/distance. there is no need for that right now hence we dont use the technology involved in that. but i assure you a bar code is NOT practical in air/space unless you hold VERY VERY still and aim towards space.

Bane, you CLEARLY don't understand how RFID works.

RFID chips are not powered, and have no battery. They RELY on the signal scanning them, to produce any information at all. The scan signal, can only read within VERY close proximity. This is because the RFID chip "reflects" that signal, instead of producing it's own, in what amounts to an interference pattern. That pattern gives back the stored info. Because there is no power/battery, it CANNOT go beyond a few feet. NO directional info either.

i understand it cant produce a signal. but they can make GPS tracking beacons the size of a credit card. so you cant tell me they wouldnt consider using the RFID and GPs in conjunction. i mean if we are talking about them using rfid to track people. as opposed to what started the convo when someone said why not use a bar code.

Even so, that would be a separate technology from RFID.

Besides, practically all cell phones already GPS tracking, or cell tower triangulation. And if you're worried about being tracked, those are far more threatening to privacy, than some possibility of RFID being pointlessly combined with GPS. Other than being created simply to scare you, such a device would be pointless, since other technology already surpasses such functionality.

It may be possible, but it would be impractical.

It would be like trying to track someone based on their credit card. VERY limited, and would only provide certain, often not useful info. You might pass through a door scanner somewhere, fine, but how do "they" know where you went after that?

I don't think we should fear individual technologies like this. They bring more convenience benefits, than downsides.

It is the people who would abuse such tech, which should be stopped. Privacy laws maybe?

What the paranoids are saying is that the GOVERNMENT would be doing this. and if a door scanner picked you up it could alert authorities if your a fugitive and make your location known. or at least an area, if could have a camera turn on and film the room in which the person passed. because if everyone had one(like the paranoids believe) the government could get crafty and track people. i dont care because i wouldnt ever let them get that shit into me.

@NikoKun i have a betterypowerd RFID tag though. But that's not the point, they do use Radio in alarms in stores. you know the ones you pass through every time you enter or leave a store.

that means that you can track a person from set locations. Stores, banks, i have one in my home, at school as well.

But as i only can control the reader at home that is the only one that actually tracks my movement history. However if every reader is connected you could make a much better system.

@timonix2 Well, yeah... The thing with the radio theft detectors at Stores is that they aren't networked together at all. Those devices are usually stand-alone, with an alarm siren build into them, and at most are only rarely linked to an alarm system.

I've never heard of them being linked to a larger network. lol

Do you know better by now? It's not about the chip. It doesn't need to be able to send data of its own. Yes. But the reading devices create magnetic fields which can be 2cm, 3 meters or even 20 meters. I think pretty much is possible. Your chip will be read automatically at every corner & you will NEVER know. This technology is made for products not for humans. That's why:

Exactly. Almost all items already have ID systems. ID cards and credit cards have magnetic strips, which contain the same sort of info as RFID. Complex barcodes have been around forever, which not only contain number strings, but also data about where they were packaged, dates, and so on.

RFID is no different, It is simply a more "wireless" version/upgrade. And it STILL requires a database.

Paranoid anti-RFID people almost always mistake RFID for GPS.
