I can't believe they're using the Gary Thorne call when you had Jim Robson who is the best hockey announcer of all time second only to Danny Gallivan, calling the game for BCTV. Gary Thorne was the best hockey announcer in the US, but nobody touches Robson.
@surfer53 There were a number of announcers calling the game. The uploader was using ESPN. Bob Miller does the local broadcasts, and without hearing the other versions, his was at least as good (I recorded the game and have it on VHS), and I haven't been able to find Miller's call on the play.
If McSorley's (who got the primary assist on this goal) career didn't end the way it did, he would be remembered as what he should be remembered as...the man who made Wayne Gretzky's career what it was, and be mentioned in the same breath as the Great One.
The sign at :50 states it (I think) very clearly:
802 + 99 + THE GREATEST ONE!!!
No question, hesitation or consultation needed to say it. And to think he did that while playing for us, even more special fr me being a lifelong Kings fan since 1975 growing up having season tickets at The (not so) Fabulous Forum down in Inglewood from 1977-87.
Gaubuchon02 get a life your just jealous of Canada your just some little computer geek who acts tuff but in real life your a big pussy who would never talk like this to someones face!!! coward
Jim Robson is in the Hockey Hall Of Fame, while Gary Thorne sucks Mickey Mouse's (Disney is the owner of ESPN) cock.
I currently live in a border state (Washngton) and am originally from L.A., and I've heard Jim Robson call not only a ton of games for the Canucks, but also for the world-famous Hockey Night In Canada on CBC,
Gary Thorne only wishes he could be either on HNIC or inducted into the HHOF. But then again, he isn't worth the time or the ink. Plus, HNIC's coverage is far better.
Might be breakable someday, but highly unlikely, and definitely not anytime soon.
I think the most unbreakable record of Wayne's is 50 goals in 39 games. Nobody is going to touch that. It's like Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.
I think even more unbreakable could be Wayne single season assists record (163), or his career assists record. Someone would need 100 assists a year for 20 years to break that, which is unthinkable. As for 163 assists, no one even gets that many points in a season these days, let alone assists. I'm pretty sure Orr and Lemieux were the only others to ever break 100, and they did it once each (Wayne did it 11 straight seasons).
I agree for goal records though, this could stand for decades.
Let's put it this way, take away all of Gretzky's goals and he's still the all-time point leader, that's like saying take Jordan's free throws away and he's still the greatest scorer.
that was a lil much.they cooda did the ceromony AFTER the game.he went on to play 4-5 more years and score like 80 more goals.not like he wasnt gonna break the record.
Nope, you cant include just those two as the greatest of all time. In my opinion, when you talk about greatest players ever I will tell you 1. Bobby Orr 2. Gretzky 3. Lemieux
It's a good call. I was watching Bob Miller and Jim Fox on Prime Ticket, the Kings home broadcast. I still have the video on tape somewhere....need to get it on Youtube for that perspective of it.
i used to get chills listening to gary thorne do hockey with the passion and emotion in his voice in the big moments like this. we need espn hockey and the thorne-clement team back. i remember watching the rangers-edmonton game that night when adam graves set a rangers record for goals. wayne's record was announced and the crowd gave him a standing ovation even though he was 1300 miles away in californa. always thought that was really cool.
does anybody know where the video is for when the oilers won the stanley cup and wayne was being interviewd and they dumped the champangne on his head? or the press conference when he found out he was being traded? i cant find either of them
I'll debate that one. The Rocket was the first to score 50, and was one of the most prolific scorers in his era, but no one, NO ONE, has dominated the game in recent memory like Wayne has. Goal scoring, playmaking, all Wayne. And yeah, throw Lemieux, Howe and Orr in there, and you have more arguments.
Actually, I think that the greatest pure goal scorer in the history of the NHL is Mike Bossy. He had speed and had a cannon of a shot combined with amazing accuracy. That is a pretty good combination.
Gretzky had the most goals, and when you put all the great goal scorers in history, it just about becomes relative. Howe was no slouch with stick and puck, or Lafleur, or Hull, et al. What makes Gretzky so incredible, was that he didn't have much speed, nor catlike quickness like Jagr or Bure, he couldn't bowl you over like Lemieux, yet the guy played the game between the ears better than any of them.
Do you think they should have interrupted the game right there for ceremonies? I know it's an historic moment, but I think a post-game celebration would have been better.
I still have the video of Prime Ticket's coverage of #802 for Gretzky. I remember seeing this live on TV. I love Bob Miller's call of it better than Gary Thorne. Gretzky's records will stand the test of time.
barry bonds is on roids, and is the shittiest athlete ever. think about it... wayne gretzky definitely is not on roids... 5'10... 150lbs... and with his small stature... THE GREAT ONE
ROFLMAO! What was that? That was a lame duck argument from you bubba.
You can't beat any of my point of views if you even triple double dog gone dare, you drunken fool.
You don't like celebrations, eh? What's wrong with giving a curtain call after a Home Run? What's wrong with fans throwing hats onto an ice after a hat trick?
Your arguments are pathetic, you little dick pussy. And you're still a watered down punk who needs a lot of cups of SHUT THE F UP!
You're the one who needs a chill pill, bubba. What's wrong with a little stoppage for a ceremony? Wayne Gretzky deserved it because he's the greatest player in NHL history. There was a stoppage when Emmitt Smith broke Walter Payton's NFL all-time rushing record.
If you don't like special ceremonies, then just sit quietly and wait for the game to continue.
You're a watered down punk who needs a lot of cups of Shut the F up! Can't beat my point of view.
Like any major sport, they celebrate the setting of a new record. Since Gretzky scored this 802nd goal to become the #1 Goal scorer in NHL (possibly professional Hockey) history, the league celebrated him for his being number 1. MLB did it for Mark McGwire and his 62nd HR (in 1 season) to break Roger Maris' record. Then they celebrated Barry Bonds for breaking McGwire. But they didn't celebrate Bonds for breaking Babe Ruth's 714 Career HRs because Hank Aaron is #1. Think about that...
If Kirk McLean respected Gretzky, he would have made Gretzky work for the goal. Upon closer review of the play, McSorley was deep enough before he passed it to Wayne that Kirk had to cover the left side of the net to take away the angle. Where Gretzky was streaking in was open because of the PP & an incomplete line change scoring on an empty right side of the net. Whether McLean wanted to let it in or not, Gretz and McSorley didn't give him much of a choice.
