  • Hardcore disciplined mofos. Amazing!

  • I have so much respect for these guys.

  • until you get sick with something that no discipline can't fight against

  • I just finished watching the whole thing.....I still wanna do it

  • SIGN ME UP I WANNA JOIN!!!!

  • An attribution must be made here: the original "Demon Drummers" of Japan are Ondekoza, which literally means demon drummers.

  • Wow..it's really like being in the army :O

Japan in so amazing...so much discipline and hard work in everything they pursue.

Like any country, they have their good and points, but I truly can't help but admire deeply the entirety of Japanese arts and culture...

  • excellent documentation about a really interesting topic!

  • 2 years with NO sex.........OUCH!!!!

  • I got blisters sometimes when I practiced in Kyoto.

  • The tradition of japanese is alsome but... it seem really hard then it look like.... really sad for some of them who not get choosen after they try everything they can....

  • I think without a doubt Japanese people are the most disciplined people in the world

  • I wanna go to Japan, its a must! :D

  • Decided to check this out after talking to some taiko players from UCR yesterday. Weird seeing myself on camera like that. The Kodo Apprenticeship is a great experience. Please understand that it's hard to encapsulate two years in fifteen minutes.

  • @CommonRaven

...yeah, i'm half and was born in japan but unfortunately had similar experiences living there. i could never ever be "one of them"... probably the most "racism" for lack of a better word, that i've ever experienced. nice to fit in here in the states though.

  • @hyperaphid General mistrust of foreigners (xenophobia) isnt the same as racism. Nazis are racist. You dont see too many Nazis in Japan, though there are is a very very small minority. Japan is more xenophobic than racist.

  • @LotusDragon09 Tough distinction when you consider their horrific past with conquered people of China, their southern islands, Philippines and POWs.

  • Their dedication is touching

  • best drumma eva: /watch?v=WXuISk4z7ZQ

  • I go to Japan every year, it's fantastic!

  • we need a anime of this,

  • mmm such hotties :P hence another reason why am in love with the Japanese culture. taiko is amazing <3

  • That was a naughty flam then.... :)

  • hey I'm 80,000th view!!

  • That was wicked, cheers for the upload!

  • Do I see a chick in the crowd somewhere?

  • Great video! keep it up :)

  • Who are these 4 morons that Dislike this? What the hell is there to Dislike you retards! Jesus some people....

  • Japanese tradition intrigues me greatly. Great culture and one of my favorites to learn about.

  • Kodo is so awesome! I've watched their "Live at the Acropolis" dvd so much it's going to wear thin soon!

  • Intense drumming for long periods of time can cause the drummer to piss blood.

    Serious stuff!

  • @willberb, that's not quite right. It's not blood. It's broken-down muscle tissue due to traumatic rhabdomyolysis, commonly known as crush syndrome. And it only happens to drummers who drum with their hands. You're dead on about it being serious stuff, because the tissue blocks up the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure.

  • i will just say .... W O W

  • four people missed the Like button,

    ___

I wonder if they'd take European Americans.. lol just kidding, I don't want to taint their establishment here.. but it would be pretty cool though..

  • my goodness. they ARE like demons!

  • @broyyduzzit360 woww....

  • I loved this! It was informative. I think I'll watch more...

  • I'd be terrified to do this, but HOLY SNAPS would it be awesome! Taiko is love.

  • Push yourself to the limit and then push yourself even more :)

  • impressive...09:21 must be like making love - great

    thx for sharing

  • Very good video, quite informative, I had the pleasure of seeing the Kodo Drummers in Austin TX, 1994. They changed my life. I cannot recommend them highly enough. I only (sometimes! and sometimes more as I deeply respect the Japanese culture, that is, what I *can* understand of it, being gaijin) wish I, too, could join the troupe.

  • i hate blisters i get them all the time digging

  • alcohol and cigarettes being banned doesn´t seam to bad to me, but all the running..... and no tv.......

on the other hand the running is understandeble you do need some stamina XXD

  • How is this video 15 minutes long? I thought there was a 10 minute max on uploads?? Cool video by the way, I wish you saw a long drumming performance at the end or something though...

  • there was some time ago =P

  • @Badboy6 Only a few members that have vip accounts can post longer videos. The rest have 11 minutes to upload.

  • Fantastic video!

  • 13:59. Awesome.

  • (to the makers of this video) Where did you come up with calling them demon drummers? There is actually a separate team that has a name that translates to demon drummers. I appreciate this video, but this seems a bit odd and possibly incorrect.

  • No way, demon drummers 'cause when they get bangin' the demons nearby can't stand the noise and disperce to bother mortals no more..

  • @mafurock33 welcome to the world of demon drummers :]

  • Maybe he called them that way because it is mentioned in the video several times?

    Just a thought...

  • is that krillin?

  • Thank you so much for posting.

  • Hi Gen from Itoro - KG

  • Haha the whole pain thing, with blisters, and blisters on your blisters, reminds me too much of my four years of rowing...

  • denmark rocks but we only have one taiko group

  • LOLOLOLOL 9:20 wtF!!! AHJAHAHA

  • I am a Taiko dummer but if my teacher made me do any of this or i made my students do this... either my teacher or i would die!!!

  • You are an uneducated uncultured fool.

  • How's it feel to be marked as spam? That's usually reserved for Viagra ads and chainmail fags. Now I guess it's for morons too.

And... most black kids get shot on the street before they grow to be a quarter as old as the Japanese. THAT'S what's sad.

  • 8:20 wow!!!!

  • Wow. That was amazing :)

  • i would love 2 see a amirican drummer like las ulrich or joey jorensen doo sumthing like ythis thay wouldent last 1 day......... this is 1 amasing thing bsst vid ever:D

  • lars ulrich is danish

  • No he's American.

His heratige is Danish, but he is american.

  • motivating !!!

  • beautiful, these people really know what it means to want something

  • woah! those guys are totally ripped :o they must carry the drums in onto the stage by them selves.

  • The dedication, discipline, and self sacrifice is

inspiring no matter what field someone chooses

    to study in!

  • "Does perfection exist? It depends on what a persons definition of perfection is..and because you can't quite reach perfection is why you continue training..until the day you die". Japanese Kendo Master

  • @CarlosMacMartin That is so true!

  • Japanese traditions are so interesting.

  • @TooKool1002 and so beautiful also

  • I wanna learn the taiko drums technique that sounds nice...

  • Makes appreciate them even more... I had no idea they went through this kind of training!

  • commentary for trisomik persons ^^

  • its worth the 2 yrs...i luv their bravery..i clap them for the great work ^.^

  • awesome! reminds me a little those kendo gasshukus I usually attend once a year.

    Much respect for Kodo!

  • It's always a pleasure to meet with Kodo when they come to town - either in potluck or before/after a show. As much of a fan(atic) as I am about Kodo, I would have to say getting to know certain members over the years (like Yoshikazu and Eiichi) have been priceless.

The shows energize and amaze me but it's seeing them as *people* that makes them special.

I do have to say though, that Kodo and Ondekoza are very different groups - their philosophies differ even though their training may not.

  • Fujimoto-sensei is my Idol. As a drummer with the group Matsuriza here in Orlando it is a dream to be an American in an all Japanese group. Kodo is actually coming here in March. I have already purchased my ticket and can not wait to see my idol in the flesh. Kodo and Ondekoza are essentially the same group. The play some of the same material. But Kodo's members were the first to start Ondekoza. It is somewhat confusing.

My goal in this life is to be as close to Nihon Daiko as possible. You?

  • Members of Ondezoka left to form Kodo. I guess that's where the confusion comes from!

I'm a fan of KODO and I see why they need to go through such discipline in order to become a full member, but part of me feels so bad for them! But I guess it's worth it since they're playing to sold out crowds and receiving such high praises.

  • I always thought Ondekoza were the "Demon Drummers" and Kodo were the "Elite Drummers". Just my guess as a Traditional Drummer. I play the Shime Daiko which can be seen in the Rice Planting scene.

Kodo is awesome. Ibuki and Irodori are definitely awe inspiring. Also their song, Lion, is very festive.

  • From a former apprentice, this documentary is pretty good! Thank you for making it! Excellent editing down to 15 minutes! BTW- KODO is touring the US Jan-March 2009... they may come to a city near you! Check it out!

  • Wow! Very cool. It must take a tremendous amount of discipline and dedication.

  • What discipline! Truly astounding.

  • Am such a fan of KODO, really, really appreciate this posting. Great documentary, nice update of the earlier one.

  • Awesome, cheers for posting.

I play taiko once a week here in my hometown - I think I'd die if I had to endure the Kodo training camp, however. :P

  • Please put "kodo" in the tabs.

  • I meant "tags". Put "kodo" in the tags section.

  • I broke my right hand for like 2 month. I learned to use chopsticks and write with my left hand. Now i can't write with it but i can still eat with it.

  • How did you break your hand?!

  • that's an interesting programme. thanks for posting!

  • you definitely got your head up your ass.

  • this is definitely worth watching all the way through. amaZing!
