Darn it if don't miss that old Montgomery Wards sporting goods department I used to walk through with my dad when he would have his old Oldsmobiles serviced. Ah the good old days
@SuperJalapeno123 Yes i would recommend a .22 for your first gun, my 1st gun i shoot was a .22, 2nd gun i owned was a 20 guage, 3rd gun i owned was a 30-06, and 4th gun i owned was a 12 guage. i was 9 when i got my .22, plus there very cheep to shoot!!!
the guy in the video is AWESOME. Excellent narrator. It's like i've seen you before on a show. OUTSTANDING WORK! especially when telling the history of such a beautiful gun. I just a browning 22 today from my grandpa. It's made in japan and is in really good condition.
Yesterday for Christmas, My aunt had given me a firearm that was my uncles who had passed away in 2001. It is a Winchester model 270 pump rifle with a Weaver 4x scope on it. It was one of his first guns he had ever owned and it was made in 1963. I would sale my own wedding ring over that gun, it will never have a price tag on it.
@hickok45 First let me say thanks for the videos, they have provided hours of entertainment. My father has a single shot .22 with a similar safety as that on your bolt action. At some point, the screw holding the safety on became loose allowing play in the safety. The trigger was then able to get pass the stop that the safety was intended to provide. Easy fix, but just a safety concern I thought I would pass along. Once again thanks and Life is Good.
The first gun I shot was a .22 also. I was about 8 or 9yrs old. My dad and uncles up north (northern Michigan) tried to get me to shoot a 30-30 but that sucker was intimidating to me. when I seen the kick on their shoulders and obviously heard the sound, I knew better. So my cousin brought me out some kind of old single-shot .22 rifle. That was my first shooting experience, then I moved on to a .22 semi-auto rifle with a crappy scope.. I wore that thing out... wish I would have kept it though.
would any body recommend a .22 rifle for a starter gun or if not what should I get?
Im wondering because im turning 13 and I want to sign up for a gun safety course and I want to improve my aiming before I go hunting with my dad or grandad.
My first rifle was a Mossberg 146B, ,22 tubular magazine also purchased from Montgomery Ward. I acquired it in about 1956.
It had almost identical features, same trigger guard, sling, etc. I sold it in a fit of stupidity in about 1968 and I have regretted it ever since.
I got a Mosberg US44 from the CMP that is very similar, except for a box magazine. Those plastic trigger guards will break over time. I found one machineed from aluminimum and then anodized.
Awesome story. It's amazing how firearms can hold such sentimental value for a bit of wood and a steel tube. I remember firing my first pistol - at 25 yrs old - .500 S&W magnum. I was hooked !
a .22 lr should be part of any and every collection. i am not going to say this one is better than that one, but there are a dozen (or more) wonderful reliable .22 on the market. i am a fan boy, the .22 is a great intro to firearms and a great caliber to teach people to shoot with.
Love this video, My grandfather took me out when I was a boy frequently to shoot his .22 rifle. He left it to me and will always be near and dear to my heart. And is one of those 'key' experiences that makes me love shooting today.
I've had an old Marlin 80DL 22 S-L-LR since the early 70's and it was used then. I now have a few fancy rifles and tricked out 10/22's but still like going "Old School" with the 80DL sporting a Williams aperture sight. Old rifle like that have class along with lots of memories. I enjoy your videos.
I'm going target practicing this weekend with my .22(only 15 years old) that I got for Christmas 2 years ago. It has no scope and it can only have 1 bullet in it at a time. I would love to have the .22 you have.
Beautifully gun I bought Ted Williams’s brand guns from Sears in the 70s made by Winchester. Western Field was sold by Montgomery Wards in my area back then. I really enjoy your videos.
I have a western field m72 30 30 lever action.I love it! Got a vid on it coming very soon.Keep up the good work friend.Keep your eye on the target and your powder dry!
Is there any reliability concern with a tubular bolt? I'm considering a Marlin XT-22 (improved 925) but I'm not sure if I should get the tubular version or the one with the box mag.
Ihop here again, I had a 144 Mossberg a few years back, I got from my dad, a WW11 marine marksmen. One day I was shooting with my neighbor and his son, he was maybe 10. He was hitting gallon jugs now and then, so I handed him my rifle and started to give him pointers on holding it,trigger squeeze, keeping both eyes open, safety etc, I got him down to hitting empty .22 shells, he was so proud and excited. I asked his dad, off to the side, if I could give it to him and I did. I bought another.
I've got a Mossberg 144 that looks alot like yours, it has a clip though, and bull barrel. It has an old Mossberg M4D scope too. Very solid,as accurate as the shooter, nice trigger pull. You can buy them that say property of the U.S. Government on them. They used them for target rifles. Usually they have a miltary peep site on them.
my grandfather was telling me about how when he was in school they would have assemblies where they would go outside and guys would shoot throw targets in the air and shoot them with pistols... and he said they would bring their bb guns and play with em on the playground.... He said there wasn't any school shootings back then, how ironic
@hickok45 i believe he means he expected you to refer to yourself by your real name, not screen name like a lot of "younger" folks in modern culture do in online communities. Of course totally your preference.....great show btw, truly one of a kind :)
@happyman489, I think he means just the opposite maybe? Actually, due to the nature of what I do and where I do it, I'm mostly Hickok45. I rarely even use my first name in a video; in fact, I'm not sure I have unless it did it in this video.
Gahhhh, i wish my .22 ejected like that :P my ejector doesnt work at all part of the time :P and Hickok what advatages does nickeling a bolt do? and whats an estimate of a price?
man, your shooting skills are just impresive, i wish i could shot like that, i have to improve my stance or soemthing like that, any way man, i wish you luck, you are a good man and a good shoter, thats all i want to be.
i have one of those.. And what a coincidence, it was the first gun i shot as well. Mine is a 48A. I'm not really sure how old it its, but it was my great grandfathers gun. Mine has the original iron sights. The rear sight is soldered in place, but luckily its dead on. Its a great gun. I'm glad it made its way down the line to me.
@hickok45 While I do enjoy FPSRussia, I realize he appeals to the dumb shooter in me, the part of my brain that wants a fully auto shotgun loaded with high explosive rounds.
you, on the other hand, appeal to the gentleman shooter in me, the part of my brain that wants to learn and share his experiences with his gun.
Great video, btw. Love that you've kept your first gun all these years
Mr. Hickok45, I have a .22 Wards Western Field Model SB 80C. It's a pump, tube fed. Savage made mine. I love it. And thank you for showing off your Western Field. :-)
I have that gun. It's BEAUTIFUL and shoots great...just two problems with it...I lost the front iron sight somehow and the clips. so I can only load one shot and shoot it only for close range. I use it when I shoot Racoons in the head when I trap em
lol thats the first gun i fired too ..thats crazy well i was suppose to shoot a shotgun first but i was nervous cause i was young so i tried the 22 first and liked it then tryd the shotgun ...ever since then i loved to go shooting
the first gun I ever fired was a bolt action 22 at cub scout camp. I have moved up to sks, remington 870 12 gauge but the 22 is still fun as hell to shoot
i have basically the same trigger guard on my mossberg model 185b-d 20 gauge bolt action shotgun. and basically the same safety. kinda seems like cheep plastic but i like the look of it, kind of retro you know? :)
@Brommykins My friend worked at a range once that only used .22 lr weapons (this was in Sweden where gun laws are A LOT stricter than in the U.S.) and he said that when he was using the firearms at the range, he couldn't focus on firing/aiming because there was one guy with a .22 ak-47 to the left of him and a .22 AR-15 to the right of him. He was constantly hit by the hot cases in the face!
The only thing I do not like scoops on is lever action rifles. However, I like thoses skinner peep sights that have very good opptics on it. Those are great to have.
wow great .22 story i love those haha i got a sears and roebuck .22 semi auto with a sears scope on it haha and a stevens /savage model 940 single shot .410 and both i got out of my grannies closet when my granpa passed away
I have 3 22 rifle of mine one is a german 22 rifle and one a bolt action 22 rifle and one is a adimatic 22 rifle and I got my gun lisents 1 year agoue and I'm 13
Gotta love the cringe when Hickok snaps the .22

I grew up with this bolt-action wooden shotgun thing. Pretty odd. And it only has a 3-4 round mag. Any idea on how much it's worth?
CaptainMaloy1001 7 months ago
my grandfather haves that rifle

Those 'sliding plates' are kind of neat.
Thanks.

How dare you destroy the value of such a fine firearm by having if re-blued. Just kidding it looks good.

say hickok, by any chance would you know how rare and how much this rifle is worth? I like the unique loading and i'm thinking of getting one

the first gun I ever fired was a bolt action 22 at cub scout camp. I have moved up to sks, remington 870 12 gauge but the 22 is still fun as hell to shoot
masterjedi89 7 months ago
i have basically the same trigger guard on my mossberg model 185b-d 20 gauge bolt action shotgun. and basically the same safety. kinda seems like cheep plastic but i like the look of it, kind of retro you know? :)

Brommykins 8 months ago 38
@Brommykins My friend worked at a range once that only used .22 lr weapons (this was in Sweden where gun laws are A LOT stricter than in the U.S.) and he said that when he was using the firearms at the range, he couldn't focus on firing/aiming because there was one guy with a .22 ak-47 to the left of him and a .22 AR-15 to the right of him. He was constantly hit by the hot cases in the face!
TheMooseofBattle 6 months ago
@Brommykins After you shoot the gun at a target, you can lob the brass casing at it too!

The only thing I do not like scoops on is lever action rifles. However, I like thoses skinner peep sights that have very good opptics on it. Those are great to have.

That's a work of art there. Beautiful gun.
Is there a gun similar to this gun. same way how you load the tubular magazine?
Like you said, it is mossberg which makes it now, which model is it?
Thanks in advance.
