  • Because India who have China and Pakistan on their borders already really want to open up another front on their border with Burma?

  • Hehe, when John started saying "Can ya, CAN YA?" I was almost sure he was hinting at "Kenya". Then I saw the title again. Ah well, such is life.

  • It is MYANMAR. Our country has changed her name long ago. Wake up, Dude! If you wanna seek your five-minute fame, do something else. This isn't entertaining at all. Boo!!

  • "Burma was the name imposed by the rulers of the British Empire when they conquered the country in the early 19th century" .. this appeared in an article written by Catherine M. Renshaw in The Australian newspaper and this is the truth. Even a non-Myanmar has realized this and how come you still being naive?

  • Idiot! its Myanmar.....Its was called Bamar and the British couldnt pronounce it right so the name change to Burma. There are over 100 ethic groups in Myanmar ... they want all the people to include thats why the name was change to Myanmar from Bamar

  • @burmesensp Please remember that this video was made in 2009, and maybe THEN it was Bamar. Thank you and DFTBA,

    Nerdfighter Colleen H.

  • Dick its Myanmar not Burma ok i am a burmese I know more about my country than you do ok if you want to help just dont intervene

    ေခြးမသား ကြၽႏု္နာမည္ လာေပးေနတယ္

  • "Obviously, it's hard to get a country like China all fired up about human rights" WHAM!

  • oh when he said "can ya?!" i thought he was saying "kenya" -.-

  • The country was renamed Myanmar because the country has been called so for centuries. The first records of the kingdom being called "Myanma" or "Mranma" are about a thousand year old, and the population of Myanmar calls their country both "Buma" and "Myanma", although it is often said "Myanma" is more literary.

Maybe you should learn a bit more about what you are talking about?

  • @wakold Dear wakold,

Please remember that this video was made in 2009. Conditions in a country can change a lot in 2 years. Please remember that and keep that in consideration when watching politics-related videos from a couple years ago.

    Thank you and DFTBA,

    Nerdfighter Colleen H.

  • @harrypotterrocks1762 What has the date of the video to do with my comment? I said that the first records of the kingdom being called "Myanma" or "Mranma" are about a thousand year old, and the population of Myanmar calls their country both "Buma" and "Myanma", although it is often said "Myanma" is more literary. Whether the political situation in Myanmar changed during the past two years doesn't change this fact, and it doesn't change the fact that the guy is ignorant...

  • @wakold I apologize on his behalf for any insult you may have taken from this.

  • Hey Guy I'm agree with you Burma taking care with CZP. That so true

  • So I went to a U2 concert last night and they were gonna play "Walk On" and they always dedicate it and make it special and a statement and everything. So they started talking about Burma and Aung Saan Suu Kyi and I was like "OH MY GOSH I KNOW ABOUT THIS! THANK YOU JOHN!"

  • Thanks for informing me about that, John : )

  • wooo Thailand

  • i respect the ppl who recognize themselves as burmese even tough they were raised in other countries.

  • After reading all the comments, i noticed that burmese always fight each other instead of uniting and fighting against the gov...This is also one of the reasons we cant win the gov and we can nver get the democary we want. it doesnt matter where u were raised. if u have the burmese blood running inside u and u recognize urself as burmese u are burmese. What;s the point of arguing i am burmese and u;re not burmese because u were not raised in myanmar... bla bla bla.. so funny ppl...

  • @yegaungkyaw well.im of mix origin.but i still call myself bamar since i have burmese blood running in my body and i was raised as one

  • Not all currencies in the world are base 10. There is a currency that exists in a world within a world, that has no base number. I am, of course, talking about wizard money. Knuts, Sickles, and Galleons are based on irregular intervals.

  • In case you haven't noticed...India is kinda preoccupied with fighting Pakistan on the other front.... just a thought

  • fuck asia

  • @Camohat100 that was rude

  • @Camohat100 that was rude

  • uh, i thought it was my-on-mar. not me-an-mar.

    my bad.

  • I'm doing a project on Burma and this was very helpful.

  • Aung San Suu Kyi FTW

  • and of course when i said i love i actually meant i hate (below)

  • i love how because he's a mormon it has to be mentioned what his religion is. If he were catholic no one would care! you never hear anyone saying "some crazy catholic"

  • @kewlpeepsnowman Well, actually, I've heard several people called "crazy catholics." Yet I agree with you that religion is often used to stereotype people. Especially Muslims.

  • aren't we actually named The Republic of the United States of America?

  • except in Mauritania, they have had 10 military coups since 1962 and they are known as "bloodless coups" because no one has ever died during one and they basically kept the same style of government.

  • She's been released! SHE'S BEEN FUCKING RELEASED!! Thank God or whoever! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @NeverEatTheUniverse yes, indeed she has! now to get the other 2200 political prisoners in Burma released.

  • @NeverEatTheUniverse I like your comment AND your username

  • Yay! SHE'S BEEN RELEASED!

  • Aung San Suu Kyi was released! Hopefully Burma will revolutionize with her help. :)

  • @whiteforestfox

I actually thought of this video when I saw the news story. I'm pretty ecstatic about it. :-D

  • Aung San Suu Kyi will probably never get a job with her criminal record :(

  • @AnimalNitrates haha!

  • @AnimalNitrates getting a job isn't the problem, shes popular enough she could get a job but one would suspect that she has higher priorities like revolutionising the country and being awesome

  • One of my friends is a Burmese noble but now lives in England because they were kicked out by the coup and his cousins are constantly dying off/being assassinated/being put in prison and I fear for him :( His grandpa built the great Burmese Railway, though!

  • I totally thought it would be Kenya or "KanJa" as he said .

  • Not all coups are bad. I mean, look at FullMetal Alchemist. If Roy Mustang and his subordinates' coup against the military of Amestris didn't happen, the whole country would've gotten sucked up into a giant transmutation circle and all the lives of the Amestrians would've been turned into energy and made into a giant Philosopher's stone. Silly John, some coups are necessary. XD

  • phyco man need medication

  • After a recent coversation with a Myanmar bartender, he informed me that Myanmar is the true name of the country in the Burmese language. It's kind of like Estados Unidos de América.

  • 'True name' is subjective not objective, though. As a political statement, I think it's important to refer to Burma as Burma as a statement of solidarity with its people rather than recognise the militiary junta as valid leadership.

  • i love this post and all posts where john explains the political situations of somewhere.

  • ur funny [=

  • @blargfailwin

The United states of America does not equal America... Not even North America equals America.

  • they arested her because a dude swam to her house.......crazy people have taken oven the earth........does anybody know if there's a way I can quit the human race because I don't want to be a part of it when we blow everything up

  • dumb fuck! Myanmar is a real name fool..Burma was Anglicization of my country during colonization period. And its NOT Rangoon..its Yangon. These Names are not recent .."Myanmar" was first used over 1100 years go during Pagan dynasty. ...you bitches....we might as well start calling Kingdom of Cambodia a French Indochina, Indonesia --Dutch Indies and ROC to Formosa...better yet,,,why dont we call U.S East Cost and part of mid west a Thirteen colonies , .fucking bitches..

  • u dumb fuck, Burma is the real name, you ass. i don't know where you heard that shit from. well i guess you was alive around 1100 years ago. what a fucker...

  • crazy people have took over the world

  • Well of course she was arrested. How dare she allow someone to just swim up to her house like that.

    What was she thinking!?

  • I believe your country's called USA and not America... :P

  • John Yettaw case was an inside job,Yettaw is a nice guy ,his intentions was good,he is a writer and a religious guy,all he wanted to do was meet and see Aung San Su Kyi and to give her a book of Mormon, the holy bible,he has tried three times to meet with Aung San Su Kyi,but the Burmese government refused him at first, finally they found a scape goat, and a way to charge Aung San Su Kyi,so they just let Yettaw swim, giving him advice on how to too, using a intelligence officer as a cover, helping.

  • If you want to talk about history .. at least you should do some home works before goin' to youtube.

    1. Ne Win Resigned on 23rd July 1988 not on 8.8.1988

    2. Sure about Base 9 Currency ?

    3. Myanmar is not a new name made up by Ne Win and the word Burma is British spelling ..

    4. Yettew case is clearly inside job. Thanks to him ASSK got more house arrest.

    5. Check US sanction again it doesn't effect Chevron.

I'm a burmese, don't support any governemnt and anyone with false news .

  • Hey, John! I'm in charge of Wheaton College's Amnesty International, and since Aung San Suu Kyi is our special focus case, we're using this video to educate people on the situation. It says everything we want to say, only better. Thanks so much for getting the word out! DFTBA!

  • If you want to help Aung Suu Kyi please do not use this video. It is full of inaccuracies and ill-informed bias. If your group is affiliated to the real Amnesty International then ask them for the facts and present that to your members, not this rubbish.

  • isnt that what the news does

  • I'm doing a speech on her tomorrow.

Except I'm only speaking to a class of... about 25.

    but still.

  • Just as you were saying that you'd give Hank/us the intro to guess, an ad popped up beneath your face for "Beautiful Burma"

  • there are alot of other things I would love to say but I can't let it out in public so i will dash here.

And that white guy that swam to Su kyi's house, well he is an idiot. That did not help ANYBODY in any way. Atleast you're posting a video to spread awareness about the situation but he was just a fool that put himself in trouble and get her in trouble too. So no thanks to him.

  • Secondly, General Naywin is not an idiot. He may not have been a great leader but I wouldn't let you put him as a clown. I wouldn't say he is not at all superstitious because a lot of people in our country are superstitious. There are no penguins in burma, i have no idea where u heard about that bathing thing with penguins and non sense as such.

It wasn't a superstitous decision when he decided to leave his position in 8, 8, 1988.

  • Um...he said porpises...not penguins!

  • Ok, don't you mean Porpoises?... and he said dolphins anyway not Porpoises either. Whatever it is, it's made up.

  • stop being brainwashed and starting bein smart, down with dumb people.

  • Some of your information is very wrong.

First of all, we changed the name from Burma to Myanmar for a very good reason. There are eight main tribal in our country and Burma people is only one of the tribes, althought it is the majority. However, by calling it Burma, we are leaving out the rest of the tribal groups such as Kachin, kayar, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Yakhine and Shan people. So we decided to rename it to Myanmar [pronounced Myan-mar] so that the name represent everyone. So now it is Myanmar

  • @kellymoelwin I prefer Burma. They other ethnicities don't seem to want to stay in Burma. They started this 50+ year civil war against the Burmese majority. Can't help it if Ne Win used that scenario to his advantage. I say we let the ethnic minorities have independence from Burma. Then we don't have to deal with a civil war they started. The current Generals are extremely corrupt and evil, but I don't want them to surrender to those who gave Ne Win the opportunity to take over the country.

  • @kellymoelwin mate,u sound very much like that FUCKED UP MYANMAR GOVERNMENT.real burmese people dont accept the name Myanmar.they still call their country "Bamar pye" or "Bamar nain gan" and call themselves "Bamar".Myanmar was introduced by Ne Win and later the SPDC changed Bamar into Myanmar.and we didnt change it for good reason.majority of bamar still object that Myanmar.so get it right, wanker!!

  • @rodriguez745 obviously you have some serious issues, mate. You don't go around swearing at people you don't know, it's not what nice people do. You are not even Myanmar, are you? So, who are you to decide what we call our country? But If you are Myanmar, that's very shameful for us. Go see your passport, it has the official name of our country on it. Please don't go around insulting others. People would think Myanmar people are rude and such low lives.

  • @kellymoelwin so tell me why do u change to Myanmar?to represent all the people living there?to show unity?let me ask u,when was the last time the country was at peace with the other ethnics?the word Myanmar is widely use by YOUR GENERATION mate,u guys got all the wrong ideas and things bout the country.most MYANMAR i know, dont know shit about their country nor their origins.the previous generation didnt use that word MYANMAR.if u dont believe me,u can ask ur grandparents.im not myanmar,im bamar

  • @rodriguez745 Funny for you to say you're bamar, it says you're australian on your icon..mate

  • @yegaungkyaw well.im of mix origin.but i still call myself bamar since i have burmese blood running in my body and i was raised as one

  • @rodriguez745 wait, so you're not even full burmese?LOL burmese blood running and raised as one? What's your nationality? and when was the last time you visited Myanmar?

  • @yegaungkyaw yeah,so what?my nationality is australian, but my origin is burmese.i was in burma a few months ago.and that is not my first time to burma and i'v been to everypart of burma..have u been to everypart of burma,ae? i dont think so.u r just like the rest of the modern days burmese, who know nothing about the past.jjust some brainwashed so called myanmar.

  • @rodriguez745 My generation? Erm how old are you? Look, it doesn't matter if one of your parents were from Myanmar. You're an Australian and you’ve been living there. Do you have to face the hardships of living in Myanmar? Of course not! You are not even Myanmar. So, don't try to act like you know more than us about our own country. I am Bamar, thats one of the tribes in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma [not Bamar]. You can check on ANY kind of official references.

  • @rodriguez745 If you go check airlines’ websites, you will not find a country called Bamar, so I don’t know how you visited Myanmar. LOL, did you go around arguing with all the major airlines too? Good luck finding your way here, mate.

  • @rodriguez745 You may call yourself Bamar or whatever, but I have been living in my country with the rest of the citizens and we are the ones dealing with the political and economical changes, whether it’s good or bad for us. There are far more important things to discuss for the betterment of our country.

  • @rodriguez745 So don’t come on youtube, shouting all the way from a different continent, and say your few visits to my country have made you more knowledgeable than us! You are no longer a Myanmar citizen. You have left the country. Don’t hide behind a tree and say “I can do better than you, I know better than you”. It’s cowardly and too easy.

  • @kellymoelwin and yet the people of the country still call it Burma as do most of the world. and just to set it straight its me an a mar. wrote it phonetically just for you.

  • @kikasall yep I guess a foreigner like you would know how to pronounce my own country better than me. lol. See it doesn't matter what you call it, or anyone else does. It's their choice as long as they don't come up with something offensive. Obviously I''m aware that some people still call it Burma. But it's Myanmar now, officially. Whether you like it or not. I don't make the rules, neither do you. Get over it.

  • @kellymoelwin i am Burmese you idiot. and all OFFICIAL PAPERS say both Burma and Myanmar. so you can just get over it. by the way i am blocking you because you are pissing me off.

  • @kikasall ok at least i'm not insulting you... and so am I so you don't need to tell me how to pronounce Myanmar or Burma.

  • hmm

  • Comment removed

  • This video is full of wrong information, bad opinions, and mispronunciations. I am against the military junta as much as anyone else but misinformed rants like this do little to help the people of Myanmar. I doubt very much if you have ever been to that country. If you had you would know that Myanmar is pronounced Mai-an-mar and not Mee-an-mar.

  • Comment removed

  • is it bad that when i read the title of this one, i instantly thought of graham chapman (and john cleese) in the penguin-on-the-television sketch?

    "BURMA!"

    "...What?"

    "I panicked."

    xD

  • Good video and effort, thanks ... from Perth.

  • around 1:10 reminds me of code geass, where britania took over japan and called it area 11

    anyone, anyone? anime references?

    okay i guess not

  • thanks. this is fantastic. i hope we will hear the best result coming August 11, 2009 for Aung San Suu Kyi

  • what a brilliant speech! thanks for telling the true situation for us ( Burmese people ) in Burma.

  • thx for creating this video about my country, nice effort :)

  • Useless Asian Country.

  • Excellent & compact....should put one more star

  • The evolution of a name:

    Mranma > Bama > Burma > Myanmar > Mianma > Miandian

  • m-ai-an-mar not mee-an-mar lol

  • Did Mr. John Yettaw really swim to her house? Somebody said this as sham. Please read the web's topic #8526 and share your thoughts. Thank you!

  • HEY, DID YOU SAY BURMA BORDER THAILAND CHINA AND INDIA RIGHT.? I think you for got laos and Bngladesh. lol

  • its BURMA people.... because of all the crap that govt does there... many of us REFUSE to acknowledge calling it myanmar

  • wait what does mormons have to do with burma?

  • I had to do a report on this woman.

He pronounced Myanmar incorrectly. They would put him in front of a firing squad for that. Poor John.

  • There has to be some type of rules for not allowing this type of systematic isolation to endure. It would be great if she could come to America because here she would be protected and allowed to speak her mind.

I just wish there was something we could do to protect these beautifully intelligent leaders that the oppressors are afraid of...

  • So wait, they put Aung San Suu Kyi on house arrest for twenty years for winning the nobel peace prize. THAT SUCKS!!!! P.S. VLOGBROTHERS RULE!!!

  • ....John got me an A in my careers class... I should explain, we had a project to do a small report on a conflict somewhere in the world. This project was announced like 2 days after I watched this... and I chose this... and I got an A and another reason to fangirl over John... THANK YOU JOHN!!!! *GLOMPS!* DFTBA

  • isn't saying "richest nation in southeast asia" a little bit like saying "least awesome dude in nerdfighteria"?

  • Burma was....

  • Comment removed

  • Wait!

U2 wrote a song about Aung San Suu Kyi!

    Walk on is that song.

I did a project about this earlier this year.

I just thought that this connection was cool.

    =)

  • thank you! i've been trying to find out for like a month now and no one seemed to know. w00t for nerdfighters!

  • No problem. :)

  • he is totally cool... i so agree

  • dude you are awesome

  • Generally it is true that "there was a military coup" leads to a stark increase in suck.

But in 1918 Finland staged a coup against their "Ruler", Russia, and though there was some suck for 30 years, that Coup eventually led to Finland's Independence/autonomy for the first time in...almost exactly 700 years.

But one incident of eventual awesome in a post-coup scenario does not alter the general truth that yes indeed, coups often lead to suck.

But finally a project for a class was useful!

  • IrishatHeart722

"1918 Finland staged a coup against their "Ruler", Russia" ?

    Bullshit.

Something missing about Burma is that when Aung San Suu Kyi won the election, she surrendered to to the military junta despite the fact that the all country was with with her.

  • You must be Finnish to respond with such vehemence. or else...no, you must be Finnish.

Which means you'd already know what you'll get when you type this into Google: "Finland Russia 1918 Coup"

But maybe multiple internet sites and the books I read for my project on the history of Finland are also "bull***t"

DFTBA my friend, you seemed to have FTB'd the A today. :)

  • in the beginning, i thought John was asking what country, then answering by saying "Kenya, Kenya!"

  • Who's Hank?

  • John, thanks so much for the little history lesson!

  • My nerdfighter friends and I are hosting a rally to alert the public on Burma in my hometown.

  • The UN really must do something about Burma which can have a big impact on the military rulers...not just statements, resolutions or condemnations...full action is needed.

  • Question - Why haven't you come to Iowa yet? I mean, it's in the same country, WAY shorter and cheaper flight than Australia or Holland

  • do you play pokemon? :D

  • well now I just feel silly lol

  • Question!!!!

Are you and John ever going to come to Vancouver, Cananda?

    -Kayla

  • Or anywhere that's not Toronto? Maybe somewhere in Newfoundland? That happens to be called St. John's?

    ..Please?

  • Or even a place called Calgary? Just a thought.

  • Cooing : Bad. lol

  • Is there a possibility that you'll ever come back to South Dakota to revisit some Paper Towns?

    - Respectfully submitted for Question Tuesday

    Brianna (:

  • Excellent summary of the events that have unfolded in Burma. Everyone needs to be more aware of the delirious things that the Burmese "government" are doing to their people.

  • I didn't know anything about the situation in Burma. Thanks for informing me!

  • Wow I never actually knew this much about the situation in Burma. I knew that it had a horribly oppressive military government but I never knew just how f'ing crazy it is.

  • You have done a great work. Thanks for the perfect video.

  • Have you ever woken up with a goat in your room?

    -question tuesday

  • Are you afraid of being assassinated for rants on crazy governments?

    -For Question Tuesday.

  • I do take this seriously, but when i saw the advert say "Visit beautiful burma" i chuckled...sorry.

  • BURMA! I will always call it Burma.

  • Wait, how does mormons tie into this?

  • The dude that swam across the lake to Aung San Suu Kyi's home is a mormon.

  • 9 is my lucky number...

haha. i love the way you say things! the tone of voice makes it ten times funnier.

  • I like it when you talk about politics. I learn more.

  • Hey, I'm Burmese and I liked this video. Good job man.

  • Totally. I'm part Burmese... thank you John for calling it Burma.. always.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • John, you're the shit...i love these episodes when you explain stuff to us we thought we knew, but in reality were totally off base on

  • If my History teacher was this interesting in primary or college I may have wanted to study more. Nerdfighters FTW

  • I've said this before, and I'm going to say it again: I wish my history teacher was this interesting.

  • She was going to be released in a week if that man didn't swim to her house she could have been let out of her house arrest by now.

  • ahhhhie.

    it's myanmar. myanmar.

i love you john. but countires (no matter how corrupt) have a right to selfdetermination. So I call the country squished between Bangledesh and Thailand: Myanmar. It's an opinon.

  • You'll be in Sydney on my birthday!!! Too bad I won't be there...

  • The Ad I got for this video:

    "Beautiful Burma"

"Home of the Golden Smile The New Asian Desination"

  • very informative, thank you

  • He really doesn't know an awful lot does he!!! This is stupid....... I really miss Myanmar and the people...... They are an inspiration to us all! God bless them

  • Quite a display self-serving concern. Say John if as you think know what is best for Myanmar why not throw in a word about good old U. S. of A. and its lovely human rights record and wise leadership, or is that too close to home for your comfort?

  • Say ZonefoA How is Johns video Self-serving?

I don't think that this video will help him sell any

more books. I appreciate his News Sunday

    videos.

  • Look!! There's a toy Willy.. So cute :)

  • do you write scripts for your videos? or just ramble on?

  • Yes ! BURMA !

    Free The Lady

    Free Aung San Su Kyi

  • John, what's with the cow on your book shelf? Why a cow?

  • What if the random people changed the name of the country to Nerdfighteria? Would you want to call it that?

  • john! when's the next time you're coming to california?!?!? (specifically the bay area)
