In 2013 i wouldn't mind a McGann series as well as the 50th Anniversary and series 7 part 2 AND series 8 part 1 AND a christmas special...so yea get to work Moffat.
Ugh, that bit at the end where Paul says "watch this space", it hit me right in the gut and brought a tear to the eye. Great that he's done the audios but such a crime that he has yet to come back on the screen. * drops to knees * Oh Grand Moff I beg you - bring him back pleeeeeeeeeeeze!
Did Russell T. Davies ever give a reason as to why he didn't restart Doctor Who with McGann? Taking nothing away from Ecclestone, who still to this day is my favourite of the three Doctors from the new series, it was unquestionably criminal that McGann wasn't asked to continue.
@agathon75 Davies wanted to give the impresion of a brand new series that had no connection to the original show for the new audience. Once the new seies became a hit with the public, he brought back old adversaries and allies from the classic series back.
@agathon75 Presumably to give the show a fresh start unhindered by such a big link to the old series - that way the backstory could be explored as the series progressed without alienating casual viewers. I love McGann but I think the clean start worked far better - McCoy being crow-barred into the TV Movie is an example of how not to do a relaunch.
Hopefully for the 50th anniversary of the show, they'll finally do "The Four Doctors" with the four most available actors; most likely to be 8,9,10 & 11 of course.
The Dr.Who tv movie was supposed to be a sort of pilot;if this took off and was successful, then on the back of it was promised a regular Dr Who tv series with american backing and production values with 6x90min telemovies per series, but it never really took off in the way it should have, and this tv movie was all you got.
When the hell will paul come BACK fuck sake he was better than some of the other doctors 1 film made by the usa WTF u no that wernt gona be good but he made it good and the bbc havent even done his regeneration fuck man they need to bring him back even if its just 4 1 ep
I hope, now that Doctor Who has become one of the Beeb's greatest ever cash cows, that they'll shell out the money to do a side series of McGann and the Time War, therefore giving him the screen time so long overdue and tying up all the loose ends he took with him.
@AnemicChia I don't think that's ever, ever going to happen. One, it wouldn't go anywhere. Two, Stephen Moffat has said in an interview that the Time War is best left to the imagination. It's not something that they have to ability to make into epic reality, and honestly it contributes to the mythology around the Doctor, which I think is a good thing. Lastly, everything has been explained, just very generally. But we did see quite a lot more detail in the End of Time.
It's sad that Paul McGann didn't continue on the role for a couple of series. He had the energy and the charm required to play the Doctor. I think that with the movie, after the regeneration, the Doctor wasn't quite the Doctor with the amnesia. Then he's wondering around. They should have had the Eighth Doctor right from the beginning and then twisted in the story of his regenration.
@DoctorWhoCenter2010 I actually have a sneaking fondness for the movie precisely because of Paul, and because it's the only time we actually SEE him as the Doctor. Having seen him in the role, it's so easy to picture everything he does in the audios, because even in that one appearance he just inhabited the character so completely. (And when the promo pics first came out, I went, "Hey, the Doctor's hot this time. :D)
@DoctorWhoCenter2010 Yeah, from what I've read of the earliest ideas, it could have been much, MUCH worse--one was a prequel with the Doctor and the Master running around Gallifrey as kids, which...thank God that never got off the ground.
The TARDIS interior really was gorgeous, and McGann's Doctor is why, for me, the movie isn't without its charm. It's not by any means a -good- movie, but McGann makes it watchable. He even manages to counterbalance the awfulness of the Master, if only barely.
I absolutely adored Paul McGann as the Doctor, and I wish he could have done more! :D However, for the way that they re-introduced the series, for a new generation of fans (many of whom had probably not even seen the movie) I think they made the right choice. A new Doctor for a new series, a new era. The 9th Doctor was kinda getting to know himself right along with the fans. And with all the new backstory, they needed a new Doctor, because his character had been so inevitably changed by it.
@firstborn1988gorsaga you posted that comment 3 months ago, yes, you're right. Christopher Eccleston is not The Doctor because 3 months ago and to this very day - Matt Smith is.
I'm confused. It says.. during this 40th anniversary episode, so this is during 2003, I'm guessing. Yet the pole for which show they want to return to networks, has a interesting article underneath title 5-30 The Ten Doctors.... At the time, we only had 9 doctors... if you count Grant. So... @hcvang - Along with two documentaries, one called "The 7-Year Hitch" detailing the development hell which led to the TVM, and another called "The Wilderness Years" which looks at various events between 1990 and 2003. There's also a strong possibility of something to do with Blue Peter. Various items they did during the show's screen absence.
@TemporalOrbit oh wow, those documentaries sound fantastic!!!!! especially the 7-year hitch! I love hearing how idiotic executives nitpick on things like this, making things impossible for well-meaning people with the energy to work on it.
he's HAD the role since 1996 and is STILL acting in it. Not only has he had shitloads of adventures on the monthly audio series, but he's had 3 seasons on BBC7 too.
@hcvang What a witty, insightful argument. I bow towards your obviously greater intellect in deciding what tv programs I shall choose to watch in future, obviously an emotional soap opera set in Cardiff detailing the adventures of chavs falling in love with a 900 year old alien while running down corridors and pressing buttons that instantly destroy any menacing alien bad guy, rendered in really cheap CGI is so much better than adult science fiction with some actual proper science fiction in it.
You want science fiction, go watch something else - like the depressing battlestar galactica. You want fantasy on a saturday night, with the kids and the wife enjoying themselves right next to you? Well, I rest my case... Doctor Who is not science fiction. It's science fantasy, and there's nothing adult about it - it's always been a family programme.
You really just dont know what the show is, and so you hate it for not being what you want it to be.
@hcvang Hahahahaha. What a hilariously ill informed comment. Doctor Who isn't Science Fiction? Well not any more it isn't. Not when you can pull the Earth through space on a tow rope. Cos you know, that made such compelling tv. Yes it's always been a family show, the difference being it used to treat kids as adults, rather than adults as kids. Who said I was watching, you'll spot that this is not a clip of NuWho, and I'm allowed to comment if I find NuWho to be inferior to the classic stuff.
@CaradocX It's never been science fiction. The lead character travels in a time/space machine which is located in another dimension entirely than it's entrance/outside shell. Within it he travels time AND space... the very core of the show... how is that science fiction? pure and utter fantasy. sci-fi is extrapolation based upon scientific fact. Fantasy - anything goes. THAT's Doctor Who.
@hcvang I think Isaac Asimov, the man who pretty much invented the term Science Fiction, would disagree hugely with your definitions. After all, his Foundation series, the most important books in SciFi, contain Coal Fired Space Ships and a sentient planet. The Doctor has a Tardis, which is based on the science of Dimensions. Science that's made up, but science nonetheless. Fantasy is stuff for which there is no scientific basis whatsoever - like magic. There is no magic in classic Who.
Yep, fantasy is stuff for which there is no scientific basis - that's what I said. Doctor Who is full of it. The Tardis has zero scientific basis what-so-ever. If you think otherwise, you need to go to school.
@hcvang Oh dear! Come on. You can do better than that. Are you really going to insist that HG Wells' novel -The Time Machine is relabelled as Science Fantasy? Time is a scientific concept. Space is a scientific fact. Movement through both is a scientific dream. Therefore science fiction. Magic is not a concept or fact. Therefore movement via broomstick in Harry Potter is Fantasy.Let's put it this way. It is possible that a time machine may one day be invented. But an enchanted flying broomstick?
The Time Machine is sci-fi. Doesnt star a character that has 13+ lives and comes back to life as a new person every time he dies, doesnt star a character who travels time and space in a dimensionally transcendental telephone box... Is it possible that a time machine may one day be invented? Yeah, if they invent an engine that can transport you fast enough, you can go forward in time - form the perspective of everyone outside the vehicle. That's all, though. Science Fantasy, mate.
@CaradocX By the way, I never once mentioned The Time Machine or H.G. Wells... I'm talking about Doctor Who.
I'm a big fan of Science Fiction, but I'm an even bigger fan of Doctor Who. Much more entertaining, much more variety, much more fun, much more everything.
You also consider Star Wars to be Science Fiction, even though it takes place a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away? Not the definition of sci-fi at all. SW is pure Fantasy, like Lord of the Rings, it just takes place in space.
@hcvang Oh, and if you found BSG to be depressing, I think you missed the point of what was one of the most gloriously uplifting and positive tv shows of the past decade. You seem to be of the opinion that only people who hold the same views you do should be allowed to comment. You have no case.
@CaradocX Frankly you seem to hold that view pretty well yourself, needing to even go to the lengths of demeaning other peoples intelligence in your replies. If you dont like it, why obsess over how bad it is? what do you get from that?
I dont care for BSG, no. So I dont watch it. Hated the first season, but I dont go on and on about it, seeking out BSG videos on which to complain and spread negativity.
@hcvang I haven't sought out a video of NuWho to negatively comment on. I've sought out a clip of Old Who that was fantastic and expressed my disappointment that NuWho is not as good as the old show. And I haven't gone on about it. I made one comment, and all subsequent comments were replies to you.I'm demeaning your intelligence because it seems to me that you have an agenda in your replies to me (Hating Whovians?) .I don't like NuWho, so what? You're the one going on about my opinions, Not me
@ApocalypseNext I really hope they don't. That would involve too many specifics on the Time War itself and as a writer I know very well that some things are best left to the audience's imagination.
@CaradocX Yeah. The first two seasons was basically more "The Rose Tyler Hour" than Doctor Who. Then, we end up Ten berating Martha Jones for not being Rose (while pandering to the shipper crowd) and yet is more civil to Donna Noble by the '08 season.
3:35 Not that I don't agree but says the guy with a terrible fashion statement on his head.

Just. Dont. Watch.

CaradocX 1 year ago
@CaradocX It's never been science fiction. The lead character travels in a time/space machine which is located in another dimension entirely than it's entrance/outside shell. Within it he travels time AND space... the very core of the show... how is that science fiction? pure and utter fantasy. sci-fi is extrapolation based upon scientific fact. Fantasy - anything goes. THAT's Doctor Who.
eesh... hate whovians.

CaradocX 1 year ago
Yep, fantasy is stuff for which there is no scientific basis - that's what I said. Doctor Who is full of it. The Tardis has zero scientific basis what-so-ever. If you think otherwise, you need to go to school.
hcvang 1 year ago
@hcvang Oh dear! Come on. You can do better than that. Are you really going to insist that HG Wells' novel -The Time Machine is relabelled as Science Fantasy? Time is a scientific concept. Space is a scientific fact. Movement through both is a scientific dream. Therefore science fiction. Magic is not a concept or fact. Therefore movement via broomstick in Harry Potter is Fantasy.Let's put it this way. It is possible that a time machine may one day be invented. But an enchanted flying broomstick?
CaradocX 1 year ago
The Time Machine is sci-fi. Doesnt star a character that has 13+ lives and comes back to life as a new person every time he dies, doesnt star a character who travels time and space in a dimensionally transcendental telephone box... Is it possible that a time machine may one day be invented? Yeah, if they invent an engine that can transport you fast enough, you can go forward in time - form the perspective of everyone outside the vehicle. That's all, though. Science Fantasy, mate.
hcvang 1 year ago

CaradocX 1 year ago

You're the one going on about my opinions, Not me

cyberzonie 1 year ago
@cyberzonie it's being re-released on DVD soon, as a special edition with, I believe, 3 discs and pretty stuffed with special features.

I hope they do McGann's regeneration into Christopher Eccleston at some point. Just feels incomplete otherwise.
ApocalypseNext 1 year ago 49
@ApocalypseNext I really hope they don't. That would involve too many specifics on the Time War itself and as a writer I know very well that some things are best left to the audience's imagination.

@ApocalypseNext Most agreed

Paul McGann would act Tennant offscreen. RTD gave us pure crap and called it Doctor Who. McGann is still the true Doctor.
CaradocX 2 years ago
@CaradocX Yeah. The first two seasons was basically more "The Rose Tyler Hour" than Doctor Who. Then, we end up Ten berating Martha Jones for not being Rose (while pandering to the shipper crowd) and yet is more civil to Donna Noble by the '08 season.
SuperWolsey 1 year ago
Should of been McGann, not BinMann
