UPDATE - I sent the R8 to Drake and they found a few things wrong with it. They replaced an IC, some resistors and capacitors and then tuned it up. Got it back and it works great now. On LW, it blows the doors off the ICOM and on MW it is much better to listen to than the Icom.
Not certain what your point is. Perhaps you just bought the R8 and are documenting a possible claim against the selling party ? It would be nice if you offered a bit more information. The Drake R8 is a fine receiver . If it lacks sensitivity there is something wrong. With the newer breed of appliance operators , operator error is first suspect. Either to pre-owner or present. Rest assured, from my personal experience Drake support is far better than ICOM. Most problems are owner induced !
Is everything connected and set properly - (antenna connected to ANT 1) (Make sure the 'square box' is around the 1 above ANT on the display)?? If everything is connected and set properly, then unfortunately the Drake does have a problem which is rare for these receivers. They seldom give any problems.. Supposedly, Drake still services these receivers.. Keep us posted.....
I've had an R8 for years an never experienced anything like that performance. Have you tried both ANT1 and ANT2 inputs (not CONV)? If so, I'd say there is a problem with the Drake. I would send it back to them for service, they do a great job.
