  • stupid noob u should have chosen the field

  • hahaha perfect timing and mixing for the song at the end. haha!

  • I was flying a "powered paraglider". It's a "backpack" unit.

  • what kind of plane where u flying

  • OUCH! But you filmed it very nice!

  • Special-- you are a nut.

  • WHat type of aircraft were you flying

  • Incredible job!! Congratulations!! I know it is easier said than done, but your lesson should be always have a spot to land in case of emergency. That was very very tight. Great job keeping your cool!!

  • Camera worked great! Where did you mount it?

    CLEAR!!! LOL

Good you made it out of that with a few scrapes!!

  • The camera was on a folded up tripod between my legs. I tied some twine around the camera and my neck. The setup allows me to see the screen so that I know exactly what I'm filming, and the top of the tripod has lots of camera angle adjustments. The downside is that it's a pain to take-off and land with. That, and the twine around my neck. A helmet cam has a lot of pros, but I was taking a practice flight for filming some waterskiing activities soon. I really wanted the viewfinder for that.

  • Oh, and lastly, I chose the road due to my perception that although it wasn't the best spot, it gave me the widest margins of error. I was concerned that due to the high pressure, I might not be flying my best, and landing in the top of a tree or the side of a house seemed entirely unpleasant.

The large number of wires crossing residential roads have now made me rule these out for emergency landings. Based on line crossings, I will choose differently next time.

  • Glad those power lines didnt give you a shock.

  • Great emergency landing. I finally started breathing again when you cleared the set of lines crossing the road. Looks like it was a downwind landing too??

When did you decided to just go for the road rather than a field? I found myself changing my mind a few times while watching it.

    Glad you are ok.

  • Wind was *very* minimal, but I believe it was cross.

I decided on the road shortly after the 2 restart attempts -- within 5-10 seconds. I felt it was important to pick a plan and stick with it. I didn't need the best plan, only a viable one. I decided that waffling between several plans could be worse than just picking a sub-optimal one and running it through.

  • The best option I likely had was the second field on the right. (The first one is much worse than it looks in the video.)

When I made my decision for the road, I wasn't 100% certain that my glide would make the second field, and in addition, the tall trees on my edge of it made for a tricky entry. In the end, I likely could have pulled a sharp right at the end to make the field (before the power lines), but at this point I was focused on plan #1.

  • Wow very close one, glad you walked away.

  • Wow! I lovit. Excellent example of the need to keep cool under pressure and in an emergency!!! Great job. Cool nerves. Glad you were ok!

  • Thanks, man!

  • Good job seeing your choices were minimal to pick from.

  • That was kind of hilarious... a friend of mine said it looked like I was planning the engine out for the video!

  • Memorable video with high educational value. Thanks for posting it.

What were you flying, a trike or a backpack?

Also, I wonder if going for the trees wouldn't have been a safer choice under such circumstances. Any thoughts?

  • Backpack. I thought about the trees coming down. I believe that the road was the proper choice, even after visiting the 'scene of the crime' with the luxury of time and hindsight. I bet more damage would have been done in a tree landing.

That said, while in the air, I was under the false impression that "all road is created equal." The one major improvement I could have done would be to lose altitude more quickly, and land on the road sooner, where it was wider.

  • Oh, and my big lesson learned from this experience is that power lines cross roads with much greater frequency than I had imagined!

  • Congrats, glad you didn't get torched from the power lines! Great footage...

  • Congratulations on walking away from this. Good that you said "clear" before trying to restart, in case anyone was behind you and near the prop. Just kidding. Good habit. Great footage.

  • I didn't even realize I said that out loud until I watched the video. It cracked me up too.

  • It's impressive that under pressure you still yelled "clear" AND maintained discipline and yelled the FAA required warning "FUDGE" - (Flyer Under Distressed Glide Emergency).

Way to keep your head about ya.
