  • When I was 8 years-old I learned about this and found it interesting.

Now 12 years-old, 4 years later, I am scared to death at the thought of it. I can't sleep.

  • This is a pretty compelling doc, very well researched. It would be nice to see a higher resolution upload. If not here on YT, then on Vimeo. VO and editing could be a little better, but that's a minor criticism.

  • I was in the castle one week before the fire and I noticed the torn open foam padding then, when i heard about the fire , I knew that someone had lit that foam pad on fire... very sad

  • All written, great research, excellent presentation. Thank for you for this meaningful documentary.

  • thank you for sharing im a life long resident of Nj and ive actully have been there a ton of times i never new this happened till today...kind of suprised i never heard of this

  • Thanks for sharing your docomentary with all of us.

  • I did so research, according to Wiki, 1984 was all around Six Flags' worst year as far as death and injury at its parks. There were 5 other incidents resulting in serious injury, One of which was fatal, (Rail Blazer at Six Flags St. Louis) another of which involved 34 injurys! (Great Air Racer at Six Flags Over Georgia)

  • very nice

  • The goal of the Virtual Reality game mentioned in part 5 made me want to cry.

  • wow I was at the Haunted Castle the day BEFORE it burnt down.. some parts were pitch black.. and I remember 1 of the guests turning on his lighter to see where he was going..

  • Great documentary! Was it true that the actors in the HC would actually touch the patrons? Nowadays, actors are not allowed to do this, but I heard it was different back then.

    Thanks again for this documentary!

  • well they certainly did a good job of making this shit creepy by FUCKING UP SO MUCH ON THE CONSTRUCTION!!!

  • six flags sounds like they don't care about safty. it's sad that 8 people burned to death. and the six flags park i live near six flags mid america(st louis) it had 4 deaths. 3 when the SkyWay car fell and 1 on the Rail Blazer(river king mine train). hmmmm people wonder why i don't go to 6 flags theme parks.

  • @zac613 They really dont! Trust me, in st.louis the safty factor SUCKS.

  • @zac613: Hey, even Disney had deaths. Though granted, most of those were due to stupidity of guests, but some were accidental (ex: America Sings).

  • @TherealRNO i know. i kinda taking a break of going to theme parks now becuz i don't have the money and some people r idiots and do stupid stuff that could hurt themselves or could hurt me. so yeah i'm taking a break from theme parks.

  • @zac613: But it is terribly ironic & sad that people DIED in a "haunted" attraction & years later, the company largely responsible for covering up the tragedy made a virtual realiy game BASED ON the horrific accident RIGHT ON the burial ground where those 8 people--for whom those skeletons were placed in a shameless promotional gimmick for Halloween--lost their lives, never mind that a similar twisty maze was built jus ACROSS from the site.

  • @zac613: If one were religious, I wouldn't be surprised if all the goings on now near the site are due to the spirits of those unfortunate dead who were lost & purposely forgotten by the park to avoid scandal.

  • @TherealRNO I bet it is the spirits in that area. those poor people died in a bad way , then forgotten about and covered up. if i was a spirit that died like that.... u bet ur ass i would cause problems lol. What does religion have to do with believing in spirits?

  • @zac613: Well, it is generally by some faith that one believes in spirits. Really, by Cultural Anthropology standards, even a mere belief in something like "dumb luck" is considered religious to a fault, because it is a belief in the untangible, whereas most science is rooted in supposedly unshakeable fact. What's ironic about that is that a faith can be unwavering, yet the facts surrounding science are always subject to change & questioning (ex: Pluto's denouncement as a planet).

  • @TherealRNO ah true... so true

  • @zac613: Of course, now that I have watched this, even with my lights on, I still feel uneasy, given my own belief in something beyond this world (call 'em spirits, call 'em ghosts, call 'em poltergiests, call 'em phantasms...but I believe that those who've passed who cannot find peace due to the events that lead to their unfortunate demise are stuck between our physical plane of existence & some astral world beyond our human comprehension, whether it be heaven, nirvana, enlightenment, etc.).

  • @zac613: These beings are stuck, because they cannot move onto what passes as an afterlife. They've unfinished business, with particular regards to the covering up & shameful tastelessness of the tragedy that befell them. They want compensation (or at least, a memorial tribute) for the wrongs that've been done & won't pass on to the other side until they know that their memories are preserved & they can rest in peace knowing that those responsible are brought to justice.

  • @TherealRNO yes. The park should have to put up a memorial and bring justice to the unsolved case. But that probably won't happen :(

  • @zac613: Agreed. 'Tis sad.

  • Amazing documentary. Thank you for being the voice for those victims, it's about time someone was.

  • @FORCEcheesus Agreed.

  • @FORCEcheesus Thank you. It is my pleasure!

  • Those 3-D effects, are very unique. Some people, recreate the rides from Great Adventure such as: Lightinin Loops, Scream Machine, Rolling Thunder, and other rides from other six flags areas.

  • @CommercialTVBuff I described them to the artist myself!!!

  • i live here bitchessssssss

  • This is why my family is never going to Great Adventure again in our lives.

  • was there that day went to see golden earring radar love band was crazy that day also haunted hose was called poes haunted castle before doorway to hell in seaside

  • @BIGMAN201939 Maybe I misunderstood, but my memory is good, and the Doorway To Hell predated the Haunted Castle by several years. I went to both places all the time: Casino Pier and Great Adventure. Thank you for your interest. This is a very important topic to me, and I appreciate your interest.

  • @jackbuster Great documentary. Did you write the script? It was excellent and will make a very interesting book. You've done a great job documenting this sad bit of history. I'm astounded that no one was found to be legally responsible for the tragedy.

  • @jackbuster Great documentary. Did you write the script? It was excellent and will make a very interesting book. You've done a great job documenting this sad bit of history. I'm astounded that no one was found to be legally responsible for the tragedy.

  • @rokalilbit They paid out civil suits, so responsibility was taken. However, no one did jail time.

  • @BIGMAN201939 Doorway to Hell assembled in early 1977, Haunted Castle assembled in early 1979.I double checked, even though I knew this. Thanks.

  • No doubt. Great job on the video. The part about the video game of an esape from a haunted house is just fucking sick-ass evil. What a bunch of Satanist fucks.

  • I don't think that who ever said a temporary structure was exempt from building codes is out of his mind

  • @MsAutobodyman And they got away with for six years.

  • jack buster you did afine job on this documentary

  • i hope there was justice brought on to the ones responisible

  • another haunted house thing caught fire the other week :(

  • the attack of the twin tower

  • Great Video! RIP...

  • do you know where is the haunted castle is located

  • heck! my birthday is september 11

  • thats freaky.... it's a haunted castle, and then there are actually deaths in it.

RIP those that died in that tragic fire

  • I was always curious. If it were that dark inside, how well could the patrons see the actors? Were the actors allowed to grab the patrons? Besides the actors stationed at the hiding posts, did they ever use additional actors to just walk around scaring people?

  • if u look closely nitro is up annd running so how would the chiller be one of the best rides in the park it always sucked

  • @FilmNMusicBuff77 God Bless the deceased, but as far as the Haunted Castle, itself, a confusing death trap: Good Riddance to Bad Trash!

  • 8 teenager was trapped and killed in the burning haunted house in the 1980 and there was a ghost there

  • @eiseongatay548 I think it is so, but it is a proven fact that any ghosts are there. OR ('ahem) NOT!!!!!

  • Six Flags NJ sucks......too many Benny's and jerkoffs from New York City go there....nothing but trash

  • @gopconservative78

Ya its really a shame. In itself its a nice park with a solid layout and spectacular

rides, but this is overshadowed by the constant flow of droves of low-life garbage from the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island. I can't even take my kids there!

  • @Blackshayde A solid layout? That's b.s. As the park was designed, only HALF of it was built, and both the two "connected" sides were joined in a rush, all higelty-pigelty.

  • unspeakable tragity, he just said there was a fire he spoke!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for making and uploading this film. Clearly a lot of time and effort went into this research. It is horrifying that justice was never served for this tragedy. The park was clearly negligent. And the crass exploitation later on, beyond belief. I think your work may have served to at least render the site a slightly more dignified place. (I worked there at that time and it was obvious the management cared far more about profit than safety. ) Kudos to you.

  • @buddhacall I STILL work on it, and can't finish the book, because of so many stories still filtrering in!

  • @jackbuster I hope you're able to continue your research. Something tells me this story is not done and ready to be filed away to history just yet.

  • i think tht it is sad that the people that died in there were just there to have fun

  • What's the organ music song called?

  • @scipiomask I'd call it, "Enter, believe your safe, but you'll never escape, unless you've suffered your last breath before reaching an exit"

  • i always ask my dad about the story of the haunted castle and what it looked like my dad said the the exact location was at the bumper cars but my main question is why is there nothing in that area

  • i remember the haunted mansion of long branch... and the commercial on tv as well as the radio.... 'The Haunted Mansion of Long Branch.... Its waiting for you...!!!'

  • This is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen! I use to go to Great Adventure all the time when I was a kid. I even went the summer that this happened.

  • @Lanzig138 LOL. So many people write me, and tell me it's shit. I suspect they are either employed by, or are gravy-training GA loyalists, who kiss ass to get to be first to ride some dumb ass new coaster.

  • jackbuster, this is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen! Are you still coming out with a book?

  • My mom was on the feildtrip there that day. I work at six flags now by the way =)

  • Very well done and, informative. It brought back memories of that day and details I never knew. My heart goes out to all the families involved.

  • This video and the book are well researched but the narrator sounds like he's trying to sound ominous and it just sounds monotone.

  • Any one who put's his CREATIVITY, together enough to

actually follow through and make a movie is a

WINNER,excellent! ...wow!..the joy of Halloween. .A Haunted house experience

is the best!...if you are into it, Definately check this out!

it's a movie on you tube called, ENTER DOMAIN HOUSE .

    it's a must see,creepy and scary,as well as haunting.

    "SEE FOR YOURSELF!"...{a ghost}

  • @joelglopez Thanks. I always say that when "haters" research, write, and produce such a complex film, ONLY THEN can they criticize me.

  • My family and I arrived 5 minutes before the fire happened. It was creepy. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

  • 0:31, Batman & Robin: The Chiller got removed in 2007, the 1st Premier coaster to be scrapped!

  • @ryanthescooterguy Was it cursed, or just a piece of shit???

  • Everybody I am sorry I meant what is located where the Haunted castle was.. I'm very sorry if i offended anybody.

  • NP Mate. Sorry from me too, I guess I just read your comment the wrong way.

  • Ummmm ExplosiveSandwich, There is no more Haunted Castle anymore.

  • its kind of spooky, he speaks of the date being may 11, that the fire happened. he refers to the site as ground zero...and yet we do about the september...11th incident. thought id point that out

  • Total coincidence. That and May 11 was a fire in an amusement park that killed 8, September 11 was a terrorist attack that killed 3,000. It's a little easier to remember the day that killed 3000 people and led to a huge mess of world events.

  • I know what you are saying, but you see.. I was just making a point that both events were terrible and happend on the 11th of each month.

  • @TruKriegsaffeNo9 Ground Zero means, "the very beginning or most elementary level of a disaster" and is NOT exclusive to the World Trade Center attacks!

  • @aNdiTaLLcra4she3V Ground Zero means, "the very beginning or most elementary level of a disaster" and is NOT exclusive to the World Trade Center attacks!

  • his narration is insanely annoying...nice texas tuxedo

  • I would put the chance of that at less than zero.

  • This tragedy is very similiar to the ghost train fire at Luna Park in Sydney in 1979 which killed about 11 people - most of which were young children ...

  • They Did, Bizzaro was before they went bankrupt but all the parks will remain open and no one is getting laid off

  • Comment removed

  • bazzaro is just madusa painted and a special feature

  • Six Flags only declared a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Which allows for them to still opperate while reorganizing and restructuring their debt.

The bad one is Chapter 7 which basically means you're closed and they sell all the assets to satisfy the debt holders.

  • I went to the park a week or so later on a senior class trip; the castle was cordoned off somehow, but you could still get quite close. It was a rainy day and the burning sell was sickening.

  • Comment removed

  • my mom was inside the haunted castle a few hours b4 it burned down...she was one of the students on a class trip from perth amboy.

  • I remember that when I toured the Haunted Castle two years before its demise, it seemed very shoddily constructed, and I wasn't surprised when I learned, from watching this documentary, that it was constructed of trailers. There also seemed to be a pervasive sense of evil within the HC which at the time I put down to my cowardice, but in the PDF version of this doc., it's mentioned that a demonic presence may roam the former castle grounds.

  • i rember this iwas 16 at the time we (family and friends ) where supossed to go there like 2 days after the fire but we didnt go but i have been there before the fire and through the haunted castle many times and can see how easy it would to become disoriented then panic, how horrible it must have been, ive been back many times after and always think about the fire

  • I remember that wall at the end of the strobe room. We would run right into the thing at top speed because the strobe looked cool when you ran down that hall. The Seaside one was the best.

  • Do you have a map of the doorway to Hell ? How did it's layout compare to the red side of Haunted Castle.

  • Being a firefighter today I seen some information on this story as well,We had drills that were inspired from this incident and some of the firefighters that were on that call that talked with us at one of our drills, they said that the fire was so hot that they could feel their change and car keys and jewelry getting hot in their pockets through their fire gear.

  • Wow. But why would there have been lamp cords? I thought the power for everything was in the control room, not individual lamps in the rooms.

  • They were those extension cords that you buy use for lamps coming from the control room.

  • The extension cords were coming from the control room they were stapled to the ceiling and the walls going into fluorescent lights and receptacles, the fluorescent lights were used for when the castle was closed for maintenance and cleaning,I worked in one similar to this attraction as an electrician, we had to rip out all the wiring and replaced everything with metal conduit.

  • wow i go 2 great adventure & seaside heights since i waz born :)

  • my mom went in it 3 doys b4 it burned

  • I visited the Haunted Castle two years before it burned down. It was a scary place, absolutely pitch black inside, and you couldn't see a thing. I almost had a panic attack while I was in there because I thought I'd never make it out. This was two years before the fire.

  • I visited GA a year or two before the fire and I lined up to go into the Haunted House but just as I got to the entrance, my friend and I decided we were too scared to go in. We were only about 7 or 8 at the time. After the fire, I was glad I hadn't gone in.

  • I'm a former long-time Ocean County resident - I grew up about 40 minutes from Great Adventure and went there frequently for about 7 years, but haven't been there since late 2002.

My dad was summoned for jury duty in the early 80s for a lawsuit involving Action Park, but was excused for saying that he knew of the park's track record for negligence.

Its a sad shame that this happened, but the whole experience is to walk in the dark, the kid who pulled the lighter should have known better.

  • for being 2004, this video seems to be of really low quality, even for youtube

  • You live supper close? and I've never heard of goliatch, goliath I've heard of

  • The least Six Flags can do is put a memorial plaque in the area where the fire occured or at the Entrence to the park

  • oh shit. this is the fire my uncle was helping with! he ook control basically of operations no shit! he was a corporal at the time and he rushed to the scene in the old patrol cars they had before from the parking lot. the kid who started it was about 12. the kids the interviewed basically threw him under the bus.

  • what is this documentary called?

  • its a documentary, what do u expect it to be like. i think its a good video though

  • oh six flags is amazing!

  • what frickin year is this

  • 2003

  • now, batman and robin is torn doown. haha

  • woooww! the park is soo muuch better now EpcotFan. haha.

  • 2003

  • Its defiantly much better. Cleaner and well rounded since the new managment took over.

  • The 4 boys from Brooklyn attended the same HS I went to (different years). I always wondered about this and could never find enough information on it. Thanks for posting this.

  • we represented one of the teens in the fire, i want to get in touch with peter, anyone have his number??????

  • Sorry but I can't help you here. I graduated from FKL in 1997, so as you can see there is a 13 year gap between when this happened and when I actually attended the school.

The ONLY reason I know about what happened is because they had pictures of the students who perished in the lobby and a memorial stone outside of the school, I believe near the flag pole.

I wonder what will happen to the memorial now, the school is scheduled for closure..

  • I've been to Six Flags Great Adventure before (in the 90's) how come I never saw this burned down castle??

  • It burned down in 1984.

  • but it says in one of your other comments that it was segregated from the park in 08. I'm just and it's in your video (burned at 1:18). I'm just wondering why I never saw it there.

  • It burned down, that's why you don't see it, do you really think six flags is going to leave the remnants of a burned building in their theme park for everyone to see how you might DIE!!! in their park. Come on, don't be stupid, they cleared the area and put something else there.

  • Comment removed

  • @cloksin Well, brother, wouldn't YOU wish the memory was better respected if the dead kids were YOU'RE FAMILY???? Empathy for the 8 mothers and fathers who children never returned home from a day of fun is something you seem to be lacking, sadly.

  • part 3... on the radio that night, we learned that 8 people died in a fire. Exactly one week to the day that I stood in the very trailers that were now gone.

Our prayers went to the families of those who lost their lives.

And I oftened wondered if Great Adventure would ever have a memorial to those who died, or if they would do something to honor those who perished?

Pete, thank you for creating this documentary.

    Mary

    1984

  • part 2... two dimly lit exit signs, only one visibly seen as you entered the 1st long hallway of the first trailer. 2 minutes into the Haunted Castle Experience I wanted to get out, it was no longer and enjoyable, as it was quite scary noticing the lack of safety mechanisms in place, or accessible for that matter!

What kept going through my mind that night was - "this place is a fire hazard!"

A week later to the day, on the day of my High School Prom, in 1984, we heard on the...con'd

  • I was there, 1 week before this tragic event! As we entered "The Haunted Castle" that I nicked "The Haunted Trailer Homes!" The 1st thing I noticed, that it was HOT, CRAMPED (we were literally crammed in together like THE WHO concert of 1979 (Cinn. OH) People behind us kept pushing us through. The actors were trying to do their job, but were often interupted by rowdy visitors. I noticed the AC vents were on the floor, there were no distinct sprinkler systems, only 2 dimly lit exits, cont'd .

  • mbeth3000,sprinklers wouldn't have helped anything, the materials that were burning in the trailers were petroleum based and all the water from the sprinklers would have just turned to steam making it that much hotter in there,Actually that place would have burned if it was placed under water after the fire started.

  • I disagree. 99 percent of the interior was wood, and the NFPA touts that there has never had a death in a sprinklered building.

  • Was it wood?,I heard there was alot of tar paper as well, but actually you would know more about it more then anyone here, from what I read you been in a couple of Mahana's creations and knew them from inside out,and true about the sprinklers the only deaths I've seen reported in sprinklered buildings were in ones that the sprinklers were shut off,and unfortunately I didn't know until after I made this post lol,So anyway you made very interesting videos and I also like your book ,thanks,John.

  • There was sprinkler system at all.

  • @mbeth3000 I had the identical experience in the HC when I toured it almost exactly two years before it burned down. I was terrified that I wouldn't make it out safely because it was so dark and unsafe in there.

  • My sister was friends with Tina Genovese and Suzette Elliot. My sister was ahead of Tina and Suzette in that death trap Castle. I also went through the castle but NOT on that day. We attended Victory Christian School together. I was waiting with my mother and sisters waiting and hoping that my sister would be on that bus- thank God that she was...After seeing all of this documentary I am APPALLLED at the information and the desecration and disrespect for those 8 kids that died that day.

  • Thankfully, as of 2008, the Haunted Castle area is completely segregated from the rest of the park. The bumper cars are no longer in use. Hopefully, if this area is developed in the future, it will be respectful and in good taste.

  • Thanks for responding...what about the virtual reality ride? Escape the Castle?? I think that's correct. Are you changing your opinion if you had one, on Great Adventure?

  • Castle Escape was removed soon after my documentary was released, beginning in 2004. The bumper cars were kept there for three more seasons. Even though it took them some time to reverse the terrible decision to redevelop the Haunted Castle site in the way that it had been, its still a step in the right direction. It is hoped that should this area be again developed, it would be done in a dignified way that was not an obvious exploitation.

  • show the dumb haunted house for pete sake!

  • Part 1.

Just to let you know I am from Jersey and I remember the 1984 Great Adventure fire and to let YOU know the castle DID HAVE SPRINKLER SYSYEMS when it opened as part of there "insurance requirments"The water was TURNED OFF due to them doing maintance on the castle. New Jersey law had required them for "stuff" like this since 1968.
