As cities go, Melbourne is a really nice place to live. It beats rivals like Sydney easily on that count. But I'll be honest; unless you're visiting family, don't come here as a tourist. There are much better places to go and things to see in Australia as an overseas tourist than Melbourne. Compared to Australia's other cities and many attractions, Melbourne really doesn't offer much. Don't get me wrong. Best city in Australia to live, but the most dismally boring place to go for a holiday.
@bels10 I'm more appalled that they chose to use a song about abortion for a tourism ad, regardless of what country it comes from! Just a strange pairing, I think...
if you are a newcomer to Melbourne, aka Crimeland, here are some words of advice from the Victoria police commissioner and I quote "look as poor as you can...Don't display your iPods, don't display your valuable watch, don't display your valuable jewelery. Try to look as poor as you can to avoid being assaulted..." So if you are assaulted in Melbourne, and there's a pretty good chance you will be, it's really your fault for not looking poor.
I love Melbourne now after being there for just 4 days. With its 'vintage'esque' time freeze, it suspends itself and remains the nucleus of a now dying eloquent and nostalgic lifesyle....
I live in Melbourne and I think it is the best city in this Country. But Melbourne does not have any world known landmarks, meaning the overrated shit hole of Sydney receives all the attention.
Melbourne has many world known landmarks and one on which is the first in Australia to have a world listing. the NSW Government spend more than 6 billion per year trying to promote there city, it's not world known because it's sydney or because of landmarks, they spend so much money to showcase that shit house and bridge, they run TV ads overseas while the Victorian Government doesn't do this!
@gamble7man thats exactly the reason they get more attention, the people there are nicer, less arrogant and just don't give a shit like you uptight twats
having seen melbournes lanes and arcades in real life, it beats the pictures, and they are truely stunning and amazing, especially block place and the royal arcade.
having lived all across the world, NY, London, Berlin, Sydney , Melbourne I must say Melbourne is one of the most special places to be, and you hear that alot overseas.
Energetic, creative, sophisticated, laid back, so much to do but has an interesting edgy side.
The opera house and bridge to market Sydney is old and boring, a decline in tourism after the Olympics and few sporting events and festivals no one really cares about outside of Sydney would indicate Melbourne s the place to be.
absolutely love Melbourne, such a great place for fashion and culture. Can't wait to check out the night life next time i'm there. I think this ad is classy and smart, what melbourne is all about.
Sydneysiders are so blindsided if you ask me, many havent even been here. Sydney's beaches close to the city are great thats about it. If you were born in Melbourne and have a social network here you love it- and to be honest ppl, facilities, navigation, events etc are so much nicer. Enjoy your city beaches for the 3 months of the year that you can Sydney because theres not much more up there in that cardboard city of yours
Get off your high horse flaunting that Melbourne is somewhat better than Sydney. I just came back from Melbourne and it's nice but has similarities to Syd. If you were born in Sydney and had a social network here you too would love it rather than labelling it as a cardboard city. Beaches and harbour are not at all what I love about Sydney. I think you are a hypocrite because you obviously are blindsided to Sydney's good characteristics and are too busy kissing Melbourne's ass.
I live in sydney, but it definitely is NOT dirty and disgusting. The northern beaches is one of the most beautiful places in sydney, but ppl just think "oh, sydney is a filthy city." its not as good as melbourne, but its not all city like a lot of ppl think.
Obviously you haven't lived in Melbourne and had much of a social life here to be able to say that. Melbourne is vibrant and gorgeous and very alive every night of the week, with more festivals and events than you can poke a stick at, running all the time, 20 cafes on every corner, clubs and bars swarming throughout the city, a gorgeous skyline, best shopping in Australia, trams and heritage buildings, culture, massive stadium events, music industry as big as Sydney's, film industry almost as.
Melbourne has way more major events all year round than what sydney has to offer! Oh Look! it's the Harbour Bridge & the oprah house *snap*snap*, lets go back on the plane now!
This ad actually shows about Melbourne and it's famous laneways and cafe's and gives you a feel of being in Paris but you are actually in Melbourne, and the obvious you can get lost in Melbourne, i know i have! ;) & the best thing about it is that you can discover moreof Melbourne!
hahahaha soorox, i have been to melbourne, if u think melbourne is like paris u r totally misled by the ads XDXDXD
Melbourne's streets are planned using a simple grid system, if u still can get lost within it, u seriously need to improve ur sense of orientation, mwahahaha~~~ Sydney is the best, with its v nice cafes in the Rocks, Paddington where u can observe a lot of gay & les dating, huge casino in the star city where u can lost not only yourself but also all your money.
soorox wow... have you ever even been to paris? it is nothing like melbourne. Melbourne is a nice place, and so is sydney but if i hear one more person with the whole melbourne is more of a european city while sydney is more americanized then i will actually start to hate melbourne. Melbourne is not like europe. it is not paris. it is fuckin australia. deal with it. they're different cities some people prefer sydney and some people prefer melbourne. that doesn't mean one is better than the other
that's like saying people remember Paris because of the Eiffel Tower, or London because of Buckingham Palace. the bridge and the opera house are icons, they're meant to have that effect. every city is beyond superficial but do people remember them for that? are you telling me people remember Melbourne because of the Melborune club? or some building in a Brack painting? no they remember Federation Square. when you refer to people as tourists then yes, tourists go to sight see not to go to live
Melbourne is based on a Roman grid system, and the land is quite flat unlike Paris. when you're in Sydney blocks are raver uneven to go around elevated uneven areas like Paris. Sydney has Balmain and Newtown. i don't suggest Sydney is like Paris but i most certainly do say that Melbourne is nothing like Paris.
If you walk down DeGraves St through the really tight lane with the cafes, it's at the end before you enter a building (the one with the Foreign Language Bookshop), the cafes all keep their bins there. The cat graffiti has long since been covered though.
Love this ad. I'm moving from Europe to Melbourne soon and a little nervous about it...seeing this makes me feel a whole lot better about it somehow! =D
It is a big city. Yes there are quite a few cities bigger but it's bigger than average. I'm in Canada at the moment and there is only one city bigger than it here (and only by 100,000). Only one in the states too.
So yeah, for people from smaller places Sydney's size can be quite overwhelming.

All of Australia is great expect Melbourne.
Melbourne has lot drunk teenagers going around bashing people. Melbourne police is useless, they have no clue to control alcohol related violence.
Melbourne can be very dangerous at night. Do not travel on train at night or walk on streets at night In Melbourne.
Sydney, Brisbane,Gold coast, Perth, Adelaide,Hobart, Darwin etc are very friendly and much safer then Melbourne.

@titoindo I know that 0:44 is a courtyard in a church garden north-east of the CBD. The lower level is inaccessible to the general public.
