Glad I can tune well by ear, but the stringing-tips were very useful for me. Stupidly enough, I'd been using an almost similar stringing-technique on my classical guitar since - like - the beginning of time.
Dean. First thanks for the tips. Question:do you ever when after changing strings check for tuning at the 12th fret harmonic and also the open or just the harmonic?
Really well made strings don't need to be broken in or stretched. Dunlop brand and Cleartone brand strings play perfect just from stringing and tuning them. (IMO)
what an awesome trick. works well on old tired tuners. saved me the cost of new tuners for now. Thanx for sharing. macman8680, thanx for nothing..keep you secret
I hate this way and I'm a pro. This way you can't take them off fast unless you cut the string which I hate because then you have twice as much to bin and it can't wrap as easy. My way is superior if you don't have the Sperzel locking type that is. TOP SECRET!
this is the wrong way to put a string on. your supposed to feed the string through the peg, leave some slack, turn the peg and let about 3 to 4 wraps build up. not tying your string on. guitarded.
@stonedrocker666 if you just wind it three times without doing what dean brown showed you, the string can and will slip. i used to have that problem with the g string, until a guitar tech at my local mom and pop music store showed me the trick.
I Think the most important video that Guitar World can put out now is how to change strings AND to tune an Original Floyd Rose correctly......this is by far one of the things alot of people have trouble with........
@idlepro it's just a natural harmonic. if you try to touch your string (like on the 12th fret or 7th fret on any string), you will make it ring out a natural harmonic. do not fret down the note, just lightly touch the string. its a good way to do this with some distortion with the bridge pickup while you are practicing this, as you will get the harmonics more easily that way. and as you get more comfortable with this technique, it will be easier to get these harmonics on the clean channel.
@gdw3 yea, although i dont think i strectched them out to good but yea i stretched them. But ive since changed strings on that guitar using this guys method and the strings have yet to come out of tune
Never did that trick! I changed strings so much but now I will try that! I use 12 harmonic and an E tuning fork to tune after the strings have been on. Intonation is a little more difficult, but is nessecary if you want your guitar to play in tune past the 12th fret.
People make fun of this, but this is what will make or break you down the road. Screw it up, and you'll be fighting your guitar everyday. Do it right, you will forget about it and focus on more important things.
@JimCMeh94 You would be right IF he was fretting the note at the 12th fret. A harmonic at the 12 is exactly the same note as the open string, up an octave with less harmonic overtones to confuse your tuner. He's right on the money in all his advice here.
If you're going to use the harmonic method to tune, you need to make sure that your intonation is correct otherwise the harmonic will either be sharp or flat compared to the fretted note.
Also, that harmonic trick - what if your intonation is a little bit off? It's much harder in that case to get it down properly. Granted, you should adjust it, but still.
why the 'knot'? its just a pain in the ass when youre changing strings and the string wont come out of the tuner if dont do one...its useless and stupid
@scorpionsweb7dt Dont do it like this! haha Floyds are annoying to do. Try and block under the bridge on a floyd so it doesnt move if you change your string because then it will be easier to sort out once you have restrung. Otherwise your bridge is just going to sink. I really wouldnt try messing with your Floyd rose if you dont know what your doing though
@Almostgfx Haha yeah i know!I don't like changing strngs! I think that the last time i put a knife under the bridge after a couple mistakes! You know i tried to change them like the tun-a-matic bridge!hahah and you can understand what happend! I was tuning..tuning..tuning but the guitar wasn't on tune!My teacher saw me once how to do it but i was like ok ok ok i got but..i didn't! I don't use my floyd guit so much because i don't wanna use the strings!haha! But with a vid! I would improve my self!
@trashthethrasher i think jennifer batten paul gilbert and sysnter gates and frank gamble should be your fair answer to that it is recent *1974* and only specializes in contemporary music but it got quite a few names behind it for a school so young.
You can san anything, for me it IS useful, because I have been changing my strings in every 2-3 months for 3 years, but not this way. For ME it was useful.
Thank you GuitarWorld, I broke a string about a year ago and haven't been able to play guitar since then. Because of you I can continue my guitar playing!
I know how to change a string but I didn't know that little locking trick, so yeah I found this video usefull and it will save me time in the futur. thanks
@maxlamenace987654321 I've never seen anyone do that before, either. It really is a good tip. I'm going to see how well it works the next time I change strings.
@maxlamenace987654321 It won't save time - it takes longer removing them unless you cut them then you end up with twice the waiste as you cant wrap them as 1 string to bin.
Glad I can tune well by ear, but the stringing-tips were very useful for me. Stupidly enough, I'd been using an almost similar stringing-technique on my classical guitar since - like - the beginning of time.

In the case of 3 to a side headstocks, just remember to bend the string towards the headstock. Otherwise, the tie won't work on the treble side.

Only thing is that the guitar needs to be properly intonated to tune it using the 12th fret while tuning.......
They should make a show about intonation.
