Really? I don't know ANYONE that has done both that would say that roller skating is just "Figure skating made easy".....it's just as difficult! There is nothing easy about figure skating, whether you are on quads or ice, it is equally difficult and demanding.
Before you compare both ice and roller skating you should try both....and maybe have more then a year of experience. I've been skating both for 15 years and they are BOTH just as difficult and demanding, and beautiful. And believe me, I'd rather fall on ice then a hardwood floor any day.
Roller skating is equally as challenging as figure skating has ever been. I think that the interest for figure roller skating should be growing at the same rate as ice skating.
I'm a roller judge and began skating in 1958. Roller skating in the US, during the 80's and 90's, had competitors to rival ice, ala Tim McGuire. Today, it is only a shell of the sport I knew. Italy, Germany and some S American countries are beating the socks off us. Many US roller skaters in 2011 cheat jumps and spin poorly. Very sad! Ice dance is sloppy footwork and posture wise, by comparison. But ice dancers "dance the dances" better than roller dancers.
roller skating and ice skating are SO different, ice skate is so easy, the spins and the jumps on ice are really easy to do, that's why roller skating doesn't look as graceful as ice skating, cause roller skating is done on wood, it's hard to spin and the skates are too heavy so the jumps are really hard to do as well. So please stop trying to compare.
@ScrapdashAF@ScrapdashAF Sorry, but I have been figure (ice) skating since I was 8 and I am now nearly 34. I competed at the National level in my country, and it is NOT an easy sport. That said, I have no problem with artistic roller skating at all, in fact it is more graceful than I thought. It is also a completely different sport. I used to roller skate as a child - quite well actually - but ever since I hit the ice, I haven't gone back, only because I love the ice though.
I agree, you guys need an Olympic Event! I would think it would be harder to spin and jump in roller skates, as the physics is different. Very lovely sport, and I'd definitely watch!
I hate to sound harsh but its iceskating on wheels and if the olympics already has iceskating then why would there need to be a sport such as this. I am not going to pretend that I understand the ins and outs of this sport, but as the video suggested it is hugely similar to iceskating therefor they wouldn't put it in. Granted, it is very graceful but I don't think that it would, or rather, should be part of the olympics. Nice though, beautiful to watch.
Great vid! Roller skating's problem is visibility. I've competed in both ice and quads and most ice skaters have no clue that artistic roller skating even exists, even though many great ice skaters started out on quad's, most notably Tara Lipinski. I would LOVE to see it in the Olympics.
think i crapped myself on the 3 loop combo...holy cow. im an artisitc ice skater of about 8 competitve years and did hockey and all that fun stuff but point being...now being a coach, i find myself choreographing tons of programs. for the other coaches i think you can agree...CHOREOGRAPHING PROGRAMS IN SOCKS IN THE KITCHEN IS NOT THE EASIEST!! cause since you arent actually doing the elements its hard to time it right. i was going to get some roller skates to help with this problem. i know...
...that obviously just because i figured skated on ice doesnt mean im going to be a wonderful roller skater...i dont expect to be, but it has to be better than the kitchen socks. and also, im planning on doing rec street hockey and was hoping to get a pair that could duo for both? its not a rec league, and so i could care less if it meets hockey regulations. ive seen inline blades with the toe stumps on the front rather than the back...are those more expensive than the traditional roller skates?
ive been skating for 6 years now since i was 9 but now i am skating im prelim and finding it hard to compite but yeah i agree roller skating should be apart of the olympics
I use to do artistic roller skating from 10 years old until 15 years old and loved it and also wish it would become an olympic sport. Does anyone know a place in Oklahoma that still teaches artistic skating? I would love to get my daughter in it now. She is just 3 years old.
love the video! definitely true! i am a figure skater and love watching roller skating videos on here! i was wondering if you have things like field moves to do? as you go up in levels?! We have elements, free skating and field moves and was wondering if roller skating follows the same peocedure in progression?
i think it would be fun to be a artistic roller skater because i can roller skate but i can't ice skate so i think its cool that i can do what ice skaters do on roller skates :)
it sorta looks like u r bashin figure skatin cuz at 0:29 the comment is not true where i live (which is VERY HOT all year round) there is a skating rink everywhere the funny thing is ive never seen a roller skating rink explain that to me
@savannah1743 Oh no,What I meant was that some people wanted to figure skate on ice, but there aren't ice rinks where they live so they have to do roller figure skating instead, but that doesn't make them "wannabe figure skaters" because they DO figure skate, but with roller skates. For example, in Portugal there are only ice rinks on winter, and they're not suitable for serious figure skating, and there are more countries with the same situation.
The roller rinks I know aren't really "roller rinks", they're more like recreational spaces for many sports (such as soccer, basquetball, etc) that happen to have artistic roller skating too. These days is kinda hard to find a only roller rink sadly :(
I read the qualifications for being considered an olympic sport and it has to a sport practiced for the past 7 years in 75 different countries and on 4 continents. That's HUGE. Hopefully it'll make it there someday. But I honestly believe it may be 15-20 years before it becomes a reality. :( That sux.
@scifigrl23 I think that the main problems of it not being olympic is the judging system and the lack of publicity in general for this sport (publicity = money).
I practice both artistic roller skating and ice skating and I think that roller skating should be an olympic sport because it's a wonderful and really hard sport. I hope that some day this will happen :)

Im a figure skater, and im not trying to bash roller skating. but its like roller skaters can practice anywhere as long as they have skates. us figure skaters have to go all the way to a rink just to skate, and usually have to pay for it. i just find jumping on ice a lot more scary than it is off ice. i dont see the beauty in roller skating..
Sorry, but you cannot just practice artistic roller skating anywhere as long as you have skates. The floors built and used by artistic roller skating are specific to that discipline. We drive to the rink too (30 min. for me) and have to pay although it is generally cheaper than paying for separate ice time, but the skates are much more expensive, so it all balances out.
Ice skating is much more smooth, fluid and graceful. The ice adds to the beauty of skating. Id rather watch ice skater than roller skaters!

The Olympic comitee do not like sports that need judges to determind a winner, they want an immeadiate winner (I.e running across a finish line)
Hence why allstar cheerleading and roller skating will not be in the olympics.

So do roller skates for this discipline, they're pretty expensive.
But why are you saying that roller skating is not as good as figure skating because it's cheaper? That doesn't makes any sense.
