I have a couple of questions about this kind of hand tools converted to hardy tools: the cheap ones are usually steel (of a lesser quality) or they can be of cast iron (very hard to weld and with high probability of cracking under use after the weld)? Is there any easy non destructive test to check if mine are steel or cast iron? thanks
@marcheseDS Ok, Steel is typically rated by its Carbon Content, it is Carbon that gives it its hardness, i.e low carbon steel is softer than high carbon steel. These tools are Panelbeaters tools of a Medium to Medium to High Carbon Content, the hardy stake is not however, because the surface is all I work on the Stake need not be hard. Cast Iron is typically a steel with more than about 2% Carbon Content. continued...
@marcheseDS Take a file and try file the surface of the steel compared to a "Known" low carbon Soft steel, if it files as easy as the known piece, then it is equivalent value carbon content, if is is harder to file then obviously higher carbon steel, good luck, send me mail and I can give you more information which explains it in more detail, am limited to characters in these responses, cheers
