I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.

That said, they're adorable.

Don't feel bad about keeping them as pets either, breeding in captivity is the only thing saving these poor creatures from extinction. If I remember correctly, they're endangered in nature.

It is a type of salamander,.. it lives most of it's life in the larva stage. When it exists the larva stage it is near the end of its life. This is almost an extinct species and should not be kept as pets :(

I used to work at a store that had them. They are extremely sensitive. Can have other fish in there with them because the fish ALWAYS peck at the little exposed freshy stringy things coming off of their gills. I mean any fish picks at them there are a very few amount of fish that won't. Not for the beginners; they are extremely picky eaters. The food they like pollutes the tanks quickly so you really have to know what you are doing
