I have the tab for this and I was excited to play it, but my fingers really need to stretch out to get those chords... really straining my hand and I have to take brakes, but hopefully the pain will go away soon after practising more. : )
He drops his sixth. I'd rather hear a little string buzz in a straight up live performance than anything crystal clear out of the studio! Just sayin'.
If you listen to this song...and the only thing you hear and comment on is the minor fretbuzz...your soul needs some serious work F.Y.I. That's how you know.
@gatsbyKLoGGitz Not the best, but amazing. I saw him live in Atlanta once, and he is incredible, but check out Steve Vai, or Yngwie Malmsteem. I play guitar, and after seeing them, I didn't even want to play any more.
This video was done while Tommy was still playing with low action. A few years later 2010 he raised his action since he said the guitar sounds better that way.
Fret buzz would also be heard clearly from his on-board pickup system, not a room mic in particular. As @jakisnot says, his action is just that low!
If you look he has 2 cables coming out of his guitar; Tommy has two different systems inside that guitar. One is the Maton APMic system that comes as standard on that model (EBG808 TE), the other is a retrofitted mic he only uses when recording live shows for DVD, TV, etc. Adding that second mic sweetens the overall sound for multimedia.
The sound hole is plugged. The primary recorded sound is coming from the piezo & internal microphone system on-board. For there to be that much fret buzz audible in the mix is due to the room mic being left on....which it obviously shouldn't have.
the fret buzz is because it's in drop d tuning, the release in tension on a low action instrument will almost always give a buzz when the particular string is struck with reasonable force
what an awesome guitarist! Tommy I am inspired by you! I have played guitar for many years and am in my sixties and a real cowboy to boot. My fingers have been broke too many times handling horses and cattle to play like you do but I do try. Thank you sir for yer music it brings me peace and comfort
He always plays with a very low action. It is impossible to play his songs with with a high action. You can hear a bit of string buzz because he's playing the guitar acoustic. When he plays it over an amp (AER) and with a bit of delay to it,the buzz gives every song this great percussive and dynamic touch.
About the fret buzz thing - yeah, if you watch his earlier videos or listen to records, there have always been fret buzz present from time to time, but way less than here in this video. so maybe his guitar got worn out over the years. Personally I love it. It adds unique character to his songs.
I like a lot of Emmanuel's stuff. I have to admit that I indulge in instrumental acoustic guitarists that are more avante garde (Dufour, Mckee, etc.) This is definately one of my favorite pieces by him though, it has that nice American folky Emmanuel vibe to it while sounding much like the late MIchael Hedges. Just beautiful!
@Stef1v That's what I said... haha. You sit there and stretch your hand practically in half for an hour, and then give up. Later on though, you'll just somehow get it.
@Stef1v You can try working with a guitar capo on 7 first, that way you don't have to stretch your fingers that far and you will actually learn to stretch them further later on.
Heard this number 2nite for the first time during an examination for the music academy from my niece........a direct hit to my heart........what a beauty !
@PaperBirdFilmsUK Most "fingerstyle" music requires the low actually (and subsequent buzzing) or they would not get the tonal sustain of things like slap harmonics and whatever else...he's such a tricky bastard. Totally mesmerizing.
Tommy likes his guitars to have very low action hence the buzz. His necks are dead straight and very low like and electric guitar. I have similar action setup on my Maton Tommy Emmanuel guitar and you have to be careful with your dynamics or it can get pretty buzzy if your not careful. Makes those 5 finger chords alot easier.
Yeaaaaaa the best! Lucky to have found a tab-book of him with all tabs from his album "Only". Only.... I have never seen a cd of his!! So thanks a lot for uploading so I can learn this song !!
I agree. The action is too low. He plays this song in another video and it's buzzing really bad. No disrespect to Emmanuel. He's an amazing guitarist. But seriously, dude, can you not hear that??
@TPJamBam Tommy has his guitars setup with a dead straight neck and low action. I don't mind the string buzz either but others tend to complain LOL. His performances are so good the buzz just adds to it :)

@risingsorrow AER Compact 60! His Maton guitar is also equipped with a microphone so it becomes a balanced mix of mic and piezo!
