  • Very well made, I'm impressed. The animations and real video, along with your very good monologue, are well combined. Cheers.

  • The universe is fucking awesome. Why do people need religion to think life is worth it when we've already got ALL OF THIS?

  • @Alargator Why do some people need to down others because they need to feel like they are a part of something bigger than them, via religion, science, or both...? Why can't some people learn to accept that everyone has their own opinions and that is what makes them... them? Why can't some people grow up?

  • I just learned more biology in twelve minutes watching a Youtube video than I did in an entire year of sophomore Honors Biology. I wish I was joking.

  • APPLEBLOOM

  • Science O_)O

  • I got here from a Zelda soundtrack...

  • wait....you are all humans?

why the hell didnt someone tell me?

  • you know during the intro all he was saying i got just fine ... it is all just basic stuff in college Chemistry ... a lot of it is bulshit work that takes me much longer than it should while others (i.e. electron orbital) is simple, basic stuff

  • what happens to electrons in atoms when there's static electricity?

  • Wow, you sir are a genius! I'm bookmarking these videos for when I need to review for Bio and Chem when my courses start.

  • The Bohr model of the atom... sir you do us chemists an injustice!

  • I want the black and white background as an actual wallpaper

  • Hank, you just taught me an entire chapter of chemistry is 15 minutes, while it took my teacher a whole week to unsuccessfully get his lesson across. You're a genius, thank you :) DFTBA

  • Carbon, the base to all life... has 6 proton, 6 neutrons, 6 electrons. Uhm... 6.6.6. Is this a random occurence, am I seeing things?

The irony, 666 is the base to all life.

  • poni should poni poni

  • how the fuck did ponies bring me here.

  • @RainbowDash68 OMG me too :O

  • Omy, if you guys had been making these back in 2006, I might have actually passed my chemistry class! Amazing!

  • why you gotta single out carbon as a little skank when most atoms when most atoms will fill there holes with anyone of anything that can give them what they need.

  • Dude YOU PEOPLE ARE AWESOME ^_^

  • i like this. make more videos.

  • HOLY SHIT I'M LEARNING! I might not be a complete failure after all :D

  • You sir Are amazing

  • It's like I'm relearning my 7th grade science :D

  • wow this is SO infroming

  • Is it me or does he look like a pedophile. not jk.

  • Hey, all the bronies that are finding these videos. Good on you! I'm a brony myself and am very happy to see bronies finding vlogbrothers videos. Anyway, just a protip here, if you liked this video, be sure to check out the other channels these guys run. They run two other channels, the first is the vlogbrothers, which is regular (though super nerdy and awesome) video vlogs. The second channel is SciShow, which discusses recent science news. Hope that helped you all out. Keep calm and brony on.

  • 4:26 666 ANTI-CHRIST

  • This is what i learned in my first 2-3 quarters of high school cemestry... In one 12 and a half minute video... FML

  • no Hank im not here cause i wanted to learn about Biology.....i was watch pony videos and yours was just there and if i've learned anything on youtube its that when the related videos have a video with something unrelated you fking click it!

  • That was awesome, loved the metaphors, but I don't quite consider salt delicious ;)

  • I got here from ponies.

    Me. Fucking. Gusta.

  • @CelestialBrony :D me too

still liked the video though :p

  • @CelestialBrony You too? Hmm, it seems as though by this logic, we could get away with turning the comments section into a massive pony thread. Who's with me?

Also, the video was awesome, very informative.

  • i got here from ponies...and i WANT TO KEEP WATCHING??!!

  • @FenrirEx2 You too?

  • @FenrirEx2 Fellow brony here who knew about these guys before I noticed the link from a pony video. If you like this stuff, you should probably check out there main channel, the vlogbrothers which is vlogs with this guy, and his brother, who is a New York Times bestselling author. You should also check out SciShow, which is also run by this guy, and covers more modern science news rather than learning standard curriculum like this is.

  • @FenrirEx2 I KNOW RIGHT? :D

  • Wow, this video is incredible! You made it so easy to understand - I'm definitely passing these videos along and watching them myself. I took an Intro to Chemistry course in college, and a physical science course, as well as engineering courses, but haven't worked on biology or physics yet.

    Excited to see more!

  • I so wish I could have learnt this in my biology back at school, if you do Masters biology please come teach at my uni haha

  • one second I'm watching MLP FiM and all of a sudden--- BIOLOGY!?

    ...

    hey, I learned something...

  • @woodlandstick omg me too!

  • @woodlandstick Aww yeah!

  • I'm at the 4:33 mark but do you even cover those arsenic based microbes completely breaking the idea that life can only be carbon based.

  • @darkheat246 There is still a huge debate over the validity of the research. Also, the arsenic replaced phosphorus in DNA, not carbon.

  • @ghandiwon How can there be a debate over microbes that were captured and their DNA was studied? I know you're the messenger I just don't understand. It's like being told I know that chocolate comes from cocoa beans but there's still a debate on it. Just like how could our own genetic history be questioned when the human genome project showed all there is we needed to know about us being related to chimps.

  • From ponies to this. I love science again.

  • why is this so entertaining...? i mean... i was just listening to Discord T.T

  • I went from ponies and now I'm learning.

    *keeps watching*

  • Hank can you come replace my biology professor?

  • THANK u :)

  • Carbon is only a tramp because all the GOOD ATOMS ARGON!

    *cries*

  • couldnt you just teach...everything? that'd be nice...

  • I really want to like this, but I feel like a better metaphor could be used than "tramp". :/

  • this is my first time learning something on youtube.

  • @dabeothic That's weird. Most of the time I learn more on youtube then what I learned at school today.

  • what happens when an atom isn't "happy"?

  • what do you americans study on science lessons? because here in Russia we have physics, chemistry and othe stuff, but no "science".

  • @andorlik In my school it stops being called science after middle school (ends at age 13-14) then we break into different subjects of science (Chem, Physics, Biology, optional Anatomy). Before that it was just basics on plant life, meteorology, the rock cycle, etc.

  • @andorlik In my highschool you take earth & enviormental science, then biology, then chem and lastly physics

  • im way smarter

  • Man, this reminds me of my chemistry teacher, especially since he always makes jokes about atoms bonding with themselves.

  • i was just watching happy ponies and now I'm learning biology

  • I'm not smart enough to understand this.... but I still want to watch it XD

  • Of course, if you're a chemist, you tend to argue that Biology is the less complex subject, when compared to our field... but that's just departmental bias. :P

  • Now I can prove my little pony can teach me sumthin

  • Comment removed

  • YOU CAN USE # KEYs TO MOVE AROUND IN VIDEO??? mind blow.

  • PRESS ''2''REPEATEDLY ITS FUNNY

  • I hate you

  • Got here from Glee's Run the world. XD

  • Honestly this was great stuff. My school is not renowned for its science department, and my science teacher taught me a contradiction to this video: that ionic bonds are in fact stronger than covalent bonds, as a general rule; could you maybe explain why they aren't?

  • @Atree0 No bond is ever fully ionic. A bond is called ionic if the difference in electronegativity is above a certain point. Lets take an ionic bond like NaCl. Put simply, the Sodium wants to lose its one electron, to satisfy the octet rule. The Chlorine wants to gain an electron to do the same. The Chlorine will "dominate" the Sodium taking its electron, while in a covalent bond the atoms are sharing electrons.

Of course, the strength of bonds relies heavily on the conditions.

  • I got here from Rachmaninoff...

  • Yep... Glad he isnt my teacher so I could possibly get with him.

  • @TheSecretPassword He's married. Very happily. To a lady that is his equal in both nerdiness and awesome. That is to say: good luck. :)

  • Nothing sexier than a man talking chemistry ;3

  • better than my real teacher

  • I thought he said: Lewis Asses and Faces.

  • 2+4= More Hydrogens

  • Comment removed

  • Check out my rendition of Bill Nye the Science Guy!

  • Why am I even PAYING for college? The first three minutes were all I needed to tell you're a better teacher than both my professors combined!

    *FACEPALM*

  • @terracrush1234 crash courses are for reviewing, learning. Without the context of what you've learned in classes very little of this would make any sense all.

But yeah, the dude's an awesome instructor.

  • @AgentKarkis Well, you're right.

But this man is more dynamic, more involved, more entertaining, more relate-able, and quite literally imparts more knowledge....

I guess I'm just saying my school sucks :)

  • This is the best thing ever. Thanks for posting it.

  • breathing is not the problem folks, it's Fire-breathing dragons, like fake concerned hippocrites such as Al gore, and fake U.N. climatologist, which fake a global warming problem. Al gore

was to mucha a chicken shit, to face Lord Monkton, an engilsh climate scientist in a debate

over the subjuect. it's all the hot air, these liars are doing which pollute the air! let it post.

  • Sex and not dieing... you sir are THE MOST HONEST PERSON EVER about human nature.

  • Core atom, or whore atom...pahaha :)

  • how do you know this?? I'm visiting earth.. and you know!

  • isn't this the same guy that does the 50 jokes videos..?

  • Sheldon's lesson! XD

  • Great video. It does make me a little sad that you didn't mention that Na+ and CL- are not only tasty, but essential for the functioning of brain chemistry :(

  • With no mean to disrespect, but do you have a channel for the other sciences and maybe math?

  • If i had had someone like this teaching my chemistry in high school instead of a monotone old lady who used Charisma as her dump stat, maybe I would've retained more knowledge on chemistry rather than harboring bitter resentment of the subject when I first got to college.

  • @fizzlefist DND Reference FTW

  • great way to learn... intense

  • Wow. That has got to be the funnest video on anything scientific that I have ever seen. Man if only these videos were available sooner. Why can't people teach like this in real life?

  • @ccinbrooklyn no idea

  • Yes... don't act like these bonds dont matter omfg

  • I love this shit.

  • If Hank was my Chem teacher, I'd have an A instead of the C I can't escape from.

  • LOL... the entire time through this video, I was like, "Gee... this guy reminds me so much of the VlogBrothers!" ... ... ... then I actually read the comments.

  • congratulations, in just twleve minutes you taught me what it took my techers half a semester to teach

  • wait, you say that because water is polar, it forms that 'dome' on an overfull glass. So does that mean that non-polar liquids, like liquid nitrogen (I think...) do NOT make a dome when in a overfull glass? I always thought all liquids 'dome-ed'.

  • @Ryeubaham Nope. If you tried that with, say, vegetable oil, it wouldn't happen either. It's rather disastrous when you overfill a deep-fryer. *used to work at a diner*

  • @Ryeubaham Nope, just polar liquids. Nitrogen would never do that. They actually do a demonstration in video #2 which is all about water.

  • you'e educated me more in this 12 minute video than in my whole semester of chemistry class....

  • e.O wtf!?!?! I got here from watching my little ponies, friendship is magic

    :O

    WTF!

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou Same here. And I'm ok with it.

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou I got here from Marilyn Manson...

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou It's because it's a featured video...which means YouTube basically RICKROLLED you.

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou You're lucky. I got here from cats and mirrors.

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou I was watching 'Epic Pie Time'

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou Same. No idea how but I do enjoy this.

  • @MrPickachuIchooseyou To understand ponys first you must get your phd in bio chemisty.

  • @purplepineapple117 xD that was gold

  • polar... bears.

  • I just made science experiment again by filling up a glass with too much water. That was cool. ;D better than a volcano or jar of dirt! He should have won a nobel prize! seriously tho, that was a good whole section taught from my science books in 12 minutes in a way i LIKED understanding and did. good job! *claps

  • So polar covalent bonds is why water has surface tension? OMG I've been wondering that for years!

  • i hate biology but this made it really enjoyable XD im more of a physics guy

  • Dude, youre awesome. Thanks!

  • I needed this when I was in Botany!!!!

  • "Toubled...mad...genius" So, we would have gotten along?

  • I'm not good with estimation of passed time, but I'm pretty sure this video covered at least a month of physical science from last semester. In twelve minutes. And was understood perfectly.

  • Why can't all my classes be like this? I actually learned stuff with this without feeling like I'm going to die from boredom.

  • Your moles are distracting

  • @markxxx21 Do you mean 6.02 x 10^23 molecules?

  • I feel like Sodium and Chlorine could be stars of one of those harsh-reality type dramas about a dysfunctional couple who sticks it out til the bitter end

  • I wish this guy was my science teacher.

  • I'm so glad Hank got those non-reflective lenses.....

  • 2:00 - organic molecules are more commonly defined as having at least one C-H bond.

  • Comment removed

  • I almost knocked my bowl of cereal over because I was trying to hit the subscribe button as fast as possible.

  • I think you forgot the links at the end...

  • got here from skriillex...

  • what of the london forces???????

  • Carbon Is also in the form CO

  • @TheElectroSword True, but CO generally forms when there's not enough oxygen around to make CO2. If you add oxygen, it will tend to go to CO2. The carbon will not be fully satisfied until there are 2 oxygens joined.

  • Got here from... Well I don't know how I got here. Carbon is my favourite element!

  • Got here from The Beatles

  • Fantastic. Love Biology and this way of teaching.

  • I'm a novice to this but I have a question based on Ionic Bonds. If a helium atom donates an electron to another atom wouldn't that make it a hydrogen atom now?

  • @tony84rico actually it will only become a hydrogen if it loses its proton. if i remember correctly, its the protons that determine if an atom is hydrogen or helium. the electrons and neutrons don't make the change.

  • @slfreedom Awesome, thanks

  • carbon is satanic it's 666

  • I think I learned more from this video than a whole semester of chem lectures. Neat!

  • I got here from watching anime . . .

It took you 12 minutes to teach what my teacher taught in 1 month . . .

    That's pro.

  • I got here from Deus Ex: Human Revolution vids...

    I never asked for this.

  • Water is better at bubbling than you... Mario... ;)

  • I love you. :|

  • Im not here for a homework. Im here for the sake of knowladge

  • . . . I got here by TaeYang . . . . . .

  • @Somberx3 AWESOME! <3 <3

  • I love you

  • I got directed here by the I like trains kid.... O.o

  • One of you should teach math! :) Please?

  • Wow I finally understand.Thanks. Plus the comparisons helped a lot.

  • Organic chemistry

  • I need to do my homework its 10:00 and i havnt started i need to close the facebook and the youtube tab NOW!

  • Now if you could please just explain equilibrium and pHs to me for my AP test...that would be awesome.

  • U forgot one bond....... the JAMES BOND.......

  • @SGHC21 and your a nonscientist asshole HOORAY FOR SHITHEADS

  • @SGHC21 you forgot the sunglasses and the AWWW YEAH

  • HANK GREEN! I JUST FOUND THIS CHANNEL AND AM AMAZED!!!!!

I should be pretty excited for next year... Taking Honor Biology next year.

  • YOUR HOT.

  • No mention of London Dispersion Forces?

  • They don't want to destroy you, they just want to be delicious!

  • Dammit, every time I encounter one of these videos I have to to find a video that can explain chemistry from the very beginning. Great video though!

  • HE CRACK HIS FINGERS OH MINE GAWSH!

Dear God, I hate it when people crack their fingers. Oy... lol

  • dam helpful so ima go outsmart my science teacher...seriously i'm not trying to troll or be sarcastic :D thanks

  • You need to know chemistry to know biology, and physics to know chemistry, and math to know physics...oh math
