  • AWESOME!!!!

  • I responded to the beauty of the music and the spirit and soul of this freedom song played out by a legand the zombies played no part for me just the chills and the moment I felt odf being free!! Thank you Richie Havens for the reminder we can choose freedom

  • Q GRANDE RICHIE

  • It's TIME in the History of the Whole Human Race where we MUST ALL, No longer let Religious, Racial or Cultural separation stand in our way, for the WORLD MUST NOW "UNITE!" and come together to finally EXPOSE the Hidden Parasitic Zionist/Jewish Menace who are at this very moment preparing to ILLEGALLY INVADE yet another Arab Country IRAN! IF(?) WE do NOT "UNITE" AS ONE VOICE: Then we can ALL Forget about Social; Religious and Cultural "FREEDOM!" Read: wake-upbeforeitstoolate(dot)com 4TRUTH

  • Wish the response on the zombies in the audience had some kind of expressions. Was this played in front of the Cannes wax museum?????BRAVO TO RICHIE LOVED IT !!!!!!

  • This is nothing like the sixties/seventies.No PASSION left in the people, stale faces and bodies! This is how conditioned people have become!!!!

  • ihan sikke hyvä XDDD

  • tosi hyvä

  • somehow Ive noticed the frozen faces of some people in the audience, much of them wore younger ,so I supose they didnt figure out who Havens is? And the reaction of the majority is pretty pathetic if I may say.

  • great music, but why is sean penn the star.....freedom is america , not Venezuela or cuba.....f sp.....

  • @skibishop85 america is a living contradiction due to the corruption of governments

  • @skibishop85 Cabrón Venezuela es el país más libre de America....

  • Legendary

  • a fenormenal performence for a man at his age...kind of budhistic wisdom..kind a way without knoving what it means...you know what I mean..the cyclop in the harvest of flames

  • Saw him in concert in Great Falls, Montana of all places and it was etherial.

  • who are the 7 assholes

  • 9

    assholes

  • 60's was about music. .No luxuries, no celebrities stuff. Nothing high tech... 50 years later from Woodstock? Is awesome.

  • es super simple toa la wea que hace, pero suena sencillamente la raja!

  • sein geist schwebt über allem!

  • commovente!!!!

  • he kind of plays the drums with his guitar...fucking awesome!

  • perfection...

  • HE'S A REAL MUSICIAN!

  • imo He sings it better with no teeth in.

  • @The arguing clowns.

    Stop?

  • listening with my hair standing on end

  • my teachers disagree with me and they would never support the idea of communism. :D

though i wrote my text in a different way i agree with you. mine sounds like blindess, yes, but at least it provoked someone who cares for such subjects...

  • It's a true anachronism to see that Hugo Chavez Brown-Noser Sean Penn, bobbing his empty skull to the lyrics of Richie's song entitled Freedom. The late Dennis Hopper was diggin' it, too. He was the guy who was such an Anti-Establishment dude, until he realized what his money could buy. Let all the hypicrites get back in their private Gulfstream jets, and head back to Tinsel-Town after the concert. If a man who looked like Havens tried to clean their limo's windshield, they'd ignore his ass.

  • @ChicagoNeilcon you're a goddamned idiot. I'd usually try for a real conversation but you just have to be the most indoctrinated plutocracy worshiping fool I've ever heard from, so I won't bother.

  • @truthslap Yo ! Pimp-slap .....! I saw Havens live @ the Aragon Theatre over 40 years ago - Freedom, Younger Men Get Older, Handsome Johnny - the whole 9 yards. You were probably still wetting yourself...just like today you blasphemous doooochen-baggen! The pendilum is starting to swing back, thank God. So get out of your Mom's basement, wipe you nose on your peasant shirt made of kemp, and head down to Cuba.. Take Comrade Penn with you.

  • @ChicagoNeilcon congrats, you're probably one of those guys that was cheering on the establishment when police were beating minorities and hippies in the streets, I bet you supported what we did in Vietnam and Cambodia, probably supported Nixon and his band of crooks all the way, but you were alive so you also saw some great music. I wasn't born until the late Reagan years and not in the US so I couldn't experience that, but I understand and support what this music is about more than you.

  • @truthslap Again - your assumptions are askew! I WAS a hippie. Read history, friend Kennedy sent advisors to Nam, johnson trumped up the Gulf of Tonkin lie to esculate a war, and a stupid waste of 56 000 lives. Ho was the anti-colonial equivilant to our George Washington, and we were forced to fight a war with one hand behind our back. If we mined HiPhong Harbor, and bombed the HoChiMin trail, it would've lasted about 6 months! You understand the Freedom that the US G.I. has granted you!

  • @ChicagoNeilcon I'm quite aware of the war-crimes of Kennedy and Johnson, but as far as I've read and understand (again, I wasn't there) there were PLENTY of anti-war grassroots campaigns on the streets, there were publicly known intellectuals standing up against the war, there was the folk music and the psychedelic musicians standing against the war, I wonder which side YOU were on? You're going to blame Ho for OUR interfering in THEIR civil war, or us fabricating the Gulf of Tonkin incident??

  • @ChicagoNeilcon yea you ever wondr why all the rich anti USA Hollwood types live in the USA and not in China?

  • Stars and cameras, flashes and woodstock-music for tuxedo-wearing people whose only language is the language of capitalism. Maybe a good musician but it is just entertainment for the unthinking majority!

The message of freedom was missunderstood.

  • @menscheskinner You"ve obviously been drinking the Kool-Aid that's handed out by your Leftist Pinko Teachers & Profs! Capitalism allows the artists (and the audiance @ Cannes) keep and spend the profits from their hard work. Stateists have the fruits of their labor taken by the State (who also crushes FREEDOM of expression, and thought). Why don't you go live in China, where your posts on the internet are censored, Then you will shut your pie-hole after realizing what freedom you had is gone.

  • @ChicagoNeilcon Yep, buddy, capitalism works. It works beautifully for the elite. The desired model is Indonesia.

  • @hirofan As an econimic system, it's humming right along - just look at China. You don't thing that the managers get the same salary as the drones on the assembly line now, do you? The only reason that Socialist Economies haven't all been relegated to the dustbins of history, is that their economic models bay next to nothing for their defense. Germany, France, Japan, Brazil, et al all know who will come to defend them when the wolf is at the door! "You betcha!"

  • @ChicagoNeilcon There are more jobless people in one province of China than in the entire United States. That country has serious problems and capitalism will not solve it. Try to see the documentary "Last Train Home" when you get a chance.

  • @hirofan so why dont you go live in Viet Nam or so other com. country? why cause you would have to work seven days a week every week of your life for nothing.

  • @iamthedor Hey, I could live like a king in the Philippines. It's not a moral system.. that's all I'm saying. Europeans have a better mix of capitalism with socialism. You prefer a land of haves and have nots?

  • Only thing that would have made this better would be if at the end he broke his guitar over Penn's head.

  • @MrTormey lol

  • El rugido del león.....por edad no se distingue..

  • Holy fuck the man's literally sweating soulful awesomeness.

  • Real music by a musician.

  • this is real music fuck todays autotuned shit .peace

  • immortel Richie Havens !!!!!

  • wow... this is the best

I've heard richie havens and it is beautiful

  • I can't believe he can still sing as well as this. He's 70 years old. So many singers lose their voice before that age. It's amazing.

  • Richie Havens is and has always been amazing. When I heard this at 15 years old, I was transfixed, deeply touched and forever changed by a man who could convey such rawness and social change in his expression through his poetry of his music. I had the chance to meet him a few years back in New hampshire and he is very nice. I am 38 now and he is still amazing to me.

  • It's AMAZING... he is unbelivable

  • MA CHANSON PREFEREE DE RICHIE HAVENS ....JE L'ECOUTE EN BOUCLE !!!

  • This is Art ...

  • Amazing! Just would love our planet would feel the same! After all it' s our home, Richie is right, family is essential, but should we feel guilty about it!?

  • sometimes i feel the same....

  • Fantastic! Love ya Richie!

  • Wonder who the five miserable bastards are who don`t like this.

  • Man, I am speechless ...unreal!

  • Keeping it real!

  • I am so damned proud of my generation!!

  • Dennis Hopper was feelin it! And Natalie Portman was thinking of puppies and candy.

  • In case anyone ever wonders what a little piece of heaven is like....clap your hands

  • unbelivable

What a great Gift for Sean Penn

  • That man has so much passion for music......Greatest thing about it, is he made this up on the spot as his last encore at Woodstock! Glad to see hes still steller!

  • à écouter en boucle .........we can now in tunisia

  • Oh my God...this is soulful music at its best .Got goosebumbs.

I can't find no words for that great piece of music and this extraordinary artist but " Absolutely amazing and magnificent !!! " Music which lasts forever...

    Wow...

  • That was great!

  • wow

  • ☺☺He is really a legend ... his song freedom , created at the same time when he was playing live in woodstock 69 comes straight from the heart.....timeless for all generations...

some things pass , this song will remain for ever...☺☺

    peace for all of you....

  • This is a soul, singing to the freedom..

  • @loganstrongmusic He didn't actually write the song, he took the words of an old spiritual, and reworked it for the occasion. It's not bitterness, just an observation. Never too poor to celebrate freedom? Try telling that to the starving children of the world. Yeah they're really free aren't they. Or are you talking about Freedom, Democracy and the American Way? (The freedom to climb your way to the top of the pile and not give a damn about who you step on, on the way up) .

  • Lots of irony (dare I say hypocrisy?) going on here. Richie's famous song based on the lament of the oppressed, being performed for the wealthy fat cats and fashionistas of France. But let's face it Richie's made a pretty good living out of this song too! Like he's saying at the end 'any time'. Bet he doesn't feel like a motherless child these days...

  • @wingtsun64 why is this marked as spam? :S

  • @xothl i dont know , perhaps because i said some simular in the original video from woodstock

  • We all age and Rickie matures in his playing. It is his soul singing. Don't compare. Listen. Learn. Watch what he gives you. It is from inside him and is him. Not all the rambling of those watching and musing

  • Go go go Richie!!! Kick the ass of those fucking capitalists

  • what a contrast then back in wodstock to compare with this performance , this its good but not even close to those days

  • dios mio !!!!

  • kik ass , but keep that faget out of the vidio!!!

  • Fantastic Musician....1969 to 2008 still got it, in bucketfuls!! Touches your inner soul

  • All I want to know is who are the 5 tone-deaf, soulless individuals who gave this a thumbs down?

  • @Quinn2112 5 idiots

  • @Quinn2112 Maybe they gave it a thumbs down for the inherent hypocrisy of the singer and the song in this situation - see my other comment...

  • One of my few musical heroes. You can feel his "essence" jump out from the video!

He has always fought the good fight.

  • more than perfect.in reality they run the whole music industrie and that is because nothing remains exept the opening line of joe cocker in the movie: "just like a woman,.. delta lady,... lets get stoned.....

  • more than perfect.in reality they run the whole music industrie and that is because

  • This is one song I would use to get civil rights for those who have physical or mental challenges, we are still feeling that we are not free, and we are still fighting for our rights, ending discrimination and more. I am doing just that.

  • @Jerseysson27 the civil rights movement may seem like people are being given freedom to exercise theyr rights, but its an illusion...you are only joining us in the slavery we call citizenship of the Usa...you have no power under this government, that claims right over your rights...you dont get your rights from the government...this government has shit on the rules that were suppose to limit its power over the peoples individual rights.. it wants you to accept it.. DONT!.. its become our master!

  • this is ass.

  • I don't need to see Sean Penn the whole time...thanks.

  • The cello is a beautiful touch. That should have been at Woodstock.

  • man, this makes me smile [:

    he's still got it guys

  • quel homme.... y'as pas a dire, le temps n'as vraiment pas d'emprise sur ces musicoss...

  • insane talent . . .

  • Cantante de la paz.LIBERTAD. Gracias Richie.

  • OMG! RICHIE AND SEAN PENN......THAT DOES IT....WHAT A CONFIRMATION....WE DO NOT ADMIRE CERTAIN PEOPLE BY MERE CHANCE!!! I HAVE LOVED RICHIE SINCE I CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN AND SEAN....I HAVE SAID FOR MANY YEARS HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTORS TO COME ALONG IN MY LIFETIME. RICHIE THIS PERFORMANCE IS MAGNIFICENT!!!!!! WE ARE KINDRED SPIRITS MY FRIEND. SAME GOES FOR SEAN.

  • how im am amazed. hes so old but he has kept his voice, he sounds the same as he did at woodstock

  • He will Ascend to The Promised Land..very few will. Or deserve.

  • A Legend.

  • TrentusMax... Close, but no cigar. Check ur history. He wasn't on the list to perform, but he was rushed on stage cuz he wld. And got pushed back out after his set again and again, but yes he did make this up on the spot and voilà the anthem for the times. I wasn't even born for three more summers. I thought most knew that, I guess my adage proves true; u lrn somethng new everyday and if not, it was a BAD day! Wow thnx. Looking frwd to a great day! (it's 04:30(am)).

  • Juste fabuleux ,le plus beau et grand moment de l histoire de cannes....inoubliable merci Richie

  • all those people should have standed up to greet Richie Havens !

  • Still a BAD MUTHA!!!

  • The amazing thing about this song is that it was made on-the-spot at Woodstock. At the end of his set, the crowd wanted more so he started to play, and this is the end result. Brilliant!!

  • Fer chrissakes, just one camera, please. A nice medium shot without the fake soulful looks on rich actors faces.

  • oh my good

    he's the best

  • Il n'y avait aucun paravent à cette occasion, ni auparavant. :)

  • exelente exelente .

  • announcer sucks.

  • this is wat music is all about, emotion, no more no less

  • check out the fluid consistency of his energy while playing this song. From the gut, from the heart!! He is awesome!! His voice has really mellowed but the energy in the delivery remains..................and always will!! What a humble, sweet man!! Journey on, Richie!!

  • Let this song be my battle song for the physically and mentally challenged, and to stand up for all who have a physical or mental challenge so that they can have freedom as well!

  • Must see Richie Havens Freedom Woodstock 1969

  • @Chicojamal6 legend

  • I wonder what he feels every time he sings it!?

  • I love this song!

But I can't understand why this VTR shows like this song is played only for Sean Penn?

  • Sean Penn is a piece of shit.

  • @jeremyjondale that may be an understatement.

  • passionate, legendary, Richie Havens

  • Inspirational

  • freedom....

  • This song is amazing!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!

  • love this beautiful man~thanks for the Glastonbury memories of pure bliss.got me through the 70's in good care~love you richie

  • this song is so passionate. so moving. i can hardly believe it was just an improvisation

  • this is best version I've seen

    great energy

  • 0:08 WHO IS?

  • he's a french comedian named Edouard Baer.

  • I am sick of Woodstock taking all the credits as the greatest pop festival, it is not true, the Isle Of Wight 1970 far exceeded the gate entries at Woodstock and there was an additional massive audience on a hill overlooking the arena mostly Vietnam deserters, french anarchists, drug addicts, desolation row inhabitants, and me a toilet attendant employed by Fiery Creation.

    It was Different.

  • I was at the Jimi Hendrix festival In 1970,People go on about WOODSTOCK being the biggest ever gathering of Hippies, Believe me I was employed at the isle Of Wight festival and British rail admitted they ferried over a quarter of a million more than they usualy ferried, Plus air transport flew in more than they had ever thought possible, then there was private boats bringing in people, the slogan all over britain was HELP SINK THE ISLE OF WIGHT. They nearly suceeded.

    800 thousand and a few

  • Comment removed

  • ok - sack the cellist and the electric guitar player - unnecessary

  • oh yeah they should piss off, they ruin the soul of woodstock.

  • Nuff said...the man is a genius in my book !

  • this is soul

  • It's nice to see Richie doing a pretty good job 40 years after first performing this. The lead guitar player is good, too. There's just no way the Woodstock version can ever be topped, much less replicated, but who cares? I play this song in my acoustic group, but it's nowhere near as good as Richie! It's a good song, nonetheless. What's ironic is we have fewer freedoms today than we did in 1969 and it's only going to get worse if Sean Penn and his cronies in politics get their way.

  • how do you play it. can you do it like he does with the thumb. please tell me

  • You need three things to be able to play Freedom the way Richie does: open tuning, the largest thumb in the west and the fastest right hand in the east. I was with him for about three years and he never ceased to amaze me.

  • i think i can pull it off just tell me the tuning and ill do the rest.

  • Often, Richie played in open D-tuning: d-a-d-f#-a-d. For "Freedom", played 9 frets up in Bm (thumb across the bottom and middle finger across the top), I think the g string was tuned to f instead of f# since the chords are all minor chords with one exception: F#m (across the 4th fret) on "A long...", then F# (add ring finger one higher fret) on "way..."
