It's TIME in the History of the Whole Human Race where we MUST ALL, No longer let Religious, Racial or Cultural separation stand in our way, for the WORLD MUST NOW "UNITE!" and come together to finally EXPOSE the Hidden Parasitic Zionist/Jewish Menace who are at this very moment preparing to ILLEGALLY INVADE yet another Arab Country IRAN! It's a true anachronism to see that Hugo Chavez Brown-Noser Sean Penn, bobbing his empty skull to the lyrics of Richie's song entitled Freedom. The late Dennis Hopper was diggin' it, too. He was the guy who was such an Anti-Establishment dude, until he realized what his money could buy. Let all the hypicrites get back in their private Gulfstream jets, and head back to Tinsel-Town after the concert. If a man who looked like Havens tried to clean their limo's windshield, they'd ignore his ass.
@ChicagoNeilcon you're a goddamned idiot. I'd usually try for a real conversation but you just have to be the most indoctrinated plutocracy worshiping fool I've ever heard from, so I won't bother.
@truthslap Yo ! Pimp-slap .....! I saw Havens live @ the Aragon Theatre over 40 years ago - Freedom, Younger Men Get Older, Handsome Johnny - the whole 9 yards. You were probably still wetting yourself...just like today you blasphemous doooochen-baggen! The pendilum is starting to swing back, thank God. So get out of your Mom's basement, wipe you nose on your peasant shirt made of kemp, and head down to Cuba.. Take Comrade Penn with you.
@ChicagoNeilcon congrats, you're probably one of those guys that was cheering on the establishment when police were beating minorities and hippies in the streets, I bet you supported what we did in Vietnam and Cambodia, probably supported Nixon and his band of crooks all the way, but you were alive so you also saw some great music. I wasn't born until the late Reagan years and not in the US so I couldn't experience that, but I understand and support what this music is about more than you.
@truthslap Again - your assumptions are askew! I WAS a hippie. Read history, friend Kennedy sent advisors to Nam, johnson trumped up the Gulf of Tonkin lie to esculate a war, and a stupid waste of 56 000 lives. Ho was the anti-colonial equivilant to our George Washington, and we were forced to fight a war with one hand behind our back. If we mined HiPhong Harbor, and bombed the HoChiMin trail, it would've lasted about 6 months! You understand the Freedom that the US G.I. has granted you!
@ChicagoNeilcon I'm quite aware of the war-crimes of Kennedy and Johnson, but as far as I've read and understand (again, I wasn't there) there were PLENTY of anti-war grassroots campaigns on the streets, there were publicly known intellectuals standing up against the war, there was the folk music and the psychedelic musicians standing against the war, I wonder which side YOU were on? You're going to blame Ho for OUR interfering in THEIR civil war, or us fabricating the Gulf of Tonkin incident??
Stars and cameras, flashes and woodstock-music for tuxedo-wearing people whose only language is the language of capitalism. Maybe a good musician but it is just entertainment for the unthinking majority!
@menscheskinner You"ve obviously been drinking the Kool-Aid that's handed out by your Leftist Pinko Teachers & Profs! Capitalism allows the artists (and the audiance @ Cannes) keep and spend the profits from their hard work. Stateists have the fruits of their labor taken by the State (who also crushes FREEDOM of expression, and thought). Why don't you go live in China, where your posts on the internet are censored, Then you will shut your pie-hole after realizing what freedom you had is gone.
@hirofan As an econimic system, it's humming right along - just look at China. You don't thing that the managers get the same salary as the drones on the assembly line now, do you? The only reason that Socialist Economies haven't all been relegated to the dustbins of history, is that their economic models bay next to nothing for their defense. Germany, France, Japan, Brazil, et al all know who will come to defend them when the wolf is at the door! "You betcha!"
@ChicagoNeilcon There are more jobless people in one province of China than in the entire United States. That country has serious problems and capitalism will not solve it. Try to see the documentary "Last Train Home" when you get a chance.
@hirofan so why dont you go live in Viet Nam or so other com. country? why cause you would have to work seven days a week every week of your life for nothing.
@iamthedor Hey, I could live like a king in the Philippines. It's not a moral system.. that's all I'm saying. Europeans have a better mix of capitalism with socialism. You prefer a land of haves and have nots?

@loganstrongmusic He didn't actually write the song, he took the words of an old spiritual, and reworked it for the occasion. It's not bitterness, just an observation. Never too poor to celebrate freedom? Try telling that to the starving children of the world. Yeah they're really free aren't they. Or are you talking about Freedom, Democracy and the American Way? (The freedom to climb your way to the top of the pile and not give a damn about who you step on, on the way up) .
Lots of irony (dare I say hypocrisy?) going on here. Richie's famous song based on the lament of the oppressed, being performed for the wealthy fat cats and fashionistas of France. OMG! RICHIE AND SEAN PENN......THAT DOES IT....WHAT A CONFIRMATION....WE DO NOT ADMIRE CERTAIN PEOPLE BY MERE CHANCE!!! I HAVE LOVED RICHIE SINCE I CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN AND SEAN....I HAVE SAID FOR MANY YEARS HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTORS TO COME ALONG IN MY LIFETIME. RICHIE THIS PERFORMANCE IS MAGNIFICENT!!!!!! WE ARE KINDRED SPIRITS MY FRIEND. SAME GOES FOR SEAN.
TrentusMax... Close, but no cigar. Check ur history. He wasn't on the list to perform, but he was rushed on stage cuz he wld. And got pushed back out after his set again and again, but yes he did make this up on the spot and voilà the anthem for the times. I wasn't even born for three more summers. I thought most knew that, I guess my adage proves true; u lrn somethng new everyday and if not, it was a BAD day! Wow thnx. Looking frwd to a great day! (it's 04:30(am)).
The amazing thing about this song is that it was made on-the-spot at Woodstock. At the end of his set, the crowd wanted more so he started to play, and this is the end result. Brilliant!!
check out the fluid consistency of his energy while playing this song. From the gut, from the heart!! He is awesome!! His voice has really mellowed but the energy in the delivery remains..................and always will!! What a humble, sweet man!! Journey on, Richie!!
Let this song be my battle song for the physically and mentally challenged, and to stand up for all who have a physical or mental challenge so that they can have freedom as well!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So what's with the repeated panning to that ultra-phoney, Sean Penn? Who gives a shit about him? Another two-faced Hollywood liberal who would jump on any bandwagon if it gave him publicity.
I am sick of Woodstock taking all the credits as the greatest pop festival, it is not true, the Isle Of Wight 1970 far exceeded the gate entries at Woodstock and there was an additional massive audience on a hill overlooking the arena mostly Vietnam deserters, french anarchists, drug addicts, desolation row inhabitants, and me a toilet attendant employed by Fiery Creation.
I was at the Jimi Hendrix festival In 1970,People go on about WOODSTOCK being the biggest ever gathering of Hippies, Believe me I was employed at the isle Of Wight festival and British rail admitted they ferried over a quarter of a million more than they usualy ferried, Plus air transport flew in more than they had ever thought possible, then there was private boats bringing in people, the slogan all over britain was HELP SINK THE ISLE OF WIGHT. They nearly suceeded.
It's nice to see Richie doing a pretty good job 40 years after first performing this. The lead guitar player is good, too. There's just no way the Woodstock version can ever be topped, much less replicated, but who cares? I play this song in my acoustic group, but it's nowhere near as good as Richie! It's a good song, nonetheless. What's ironic is we have fewer freedoms today than we did in 1969 and it's only going to get worse if Sean Penn and his cronies in politics get their way.
You need three things to be able to play Freedom the way Richie does: open tuning, the largest thumb in the west and the fastest right hand in the east. I was with him for about three years and he never ceased to amaze me.
Often, Richie played in open D-tuning: d-a-d-f#-a-d. For "Freedom", played 9 frets up in Bm (thumb across the bottom and middle finger across the top), I think the g string was tuned to f instead of f# since the chords are all minor chords with one exception: F#m (across the 4th fret) on "A long...", then F# (add ring finger one higher fret) on "way..."
How is it possible that this legend gets better and better every year?! Happy 71st B'Day Richie ... Peace ...

Brilliant!!

Fer chrissakes, just one camera, please. A nice medium shot without the fake soulful looks on rich actors faces.

check out the fluid consistency of his energy while playing this song. From the gut, from the heart!! He is awesome!! His voice has really mellowed but the energy in the delivery remains..................and always will!! What a humble, sweet man!! Journey on, Richie!!

It was Different.
niceonemicky 2 years ago

What's ironic is we have fewer freedoms today than we did in 1969 and it's only going to get worse if Sean Penn and his cronies in politics get their way.
governorgilf 2 years ago
how do you play it. can you do it like he does with the thumb. please tell me
hurlockbros 2 years ago
You need three things to be able to play Freedom the way Richie does: open tuning, the largest thumb in the west and the fastest right hand in the east. I was with him for about three years and he never ceased to amaze me.
bungomoony 2 years ago
i think i can pull it off just tell me the tuning and ill do the rest.
hurlockbros 2 years ago
Often, Richie played in open D-tuning: d-a-d-f#-a-d. For "Freedom", played 9 frets up in Bm (thumb across the bottom and middle finger across the top), I think the g string was tuned to f instead of f# since the chords are all minor chords with one exception: F#m (across the 4th fret) on "A long...", then F# (add ring finger one higher fret) on "way..."
