  • @rosenekokitty Heh, that's just as big as it gets...small species.

  • Awesome mantis!I'm thinking about getting a small green or yellow one :)

  • thats a Pseudosquilla ciliata they don't grow to big, to anyone who wants to know they don't need a tank any bigger than the one in the vid, they are known to change their colouration depending on their environment, this little guy was probably from a reef with lots of coral, some are coloured in a black and brown with tiny white dots

  • Yup, they are about $0.50 from my local supplier.

  • peppermint shrimp

  • What a pretty shade of yellow!!!!

  • EXCELLENTE! I have to try it with my piranhas! how cost that mastis shrimp? I will put him in my piranhas aquario ;) Can I buy yours? because he is even beautiful than the outhers!!

  • putting a salt water shrimp in a fresh water aquarium=dead shrimp.

  • its supose too... It was to feed the piranhas... So I dont care ;)

  • Huh? it is in a saltwater tank.

  • Umm.... putting piranhas in salt water aquarium = dead piranhas, no?

  • The ideia is to put the shrimp in the fresh water aquarium with the piranhas ;) to feed them.

PS - I have been in Mexico and I saw lots of Mantis Shrimp, smalls and big ones in tiny caves of water in the rocks near the sea.

  • Yap. I know

  • oops...I was refferings to Tim4sX post...heh

  • some one please help me where do you get these?

  • internet

  • try searching under 'mantis shrimps' on online fish stores.(depends on where you are)

  • what the shit hes yellow! hey what size tank is that and is it an acrilic?

  • Its a 1foot square glass tank.

  • I just got one today, red all over...definitely not yours or mantis...only an inch long. I have this and a pistol in another tank, inverts are the best

  • There are much bigger kinds.

  • if i was the pink one i would have been like RAPE!!!

  • And the mantis would have kept raping you.

  • I did not know you could keep these. Thats unbelievable! I keep fresh water shrimp but this makes me want to go out and get a 55g for one of those. Definitely found something to save up for.

  • make shure to get a pretty deep sand bed for them, they like to burrow under the live rock.

  • Maybe you could start out with a 30 or 55 gallon tank with some damsels and maybe some T5 lighting and some LED's to grow some soft corals. Get a basic saltwater background, do your homework on the mantis you want to purchase, and you're golden. (remember that the peacock mantis needs thick acryllic, while most spearers only need glass. The zebra mantis, on the other hand, needs about 1 ft. of sand and 100 gallons.) Stomatopods ideally need a species tank to thrive. (live by themselves.)Peace.

  • Do NOT forget to get a special kind of plexiglass. Mantis shrimps can PUNCH THROUGH GLASS.

  • Only the peacock stomatopods can. None of the others are big enough or strong enough, or have spear claws instead of clubs. So no worries. All my mantis are spearers (except for my tiny green smasher) and they live comfortably in their burrows in my glass tanks. They were all rescued from the aquarium store I work at, since nobody wanted to take them home.

  • Poor little psychos. I love mantis shrimp.

  • Pinchy Chinko... That's a hilarious name, dude.

  • LOL, I thought so too.

  • That is a sweet Ciliata. How big is it? I just got mine, check out the video of him getting a minnow =].

  • Its just under 3 inches. I got a peacock as well and just got the second peacock a few days ago. I'll post vids of them later.

  • Before buying mantis Shrimp read the following:

Mantis shrimp can sever fingers(Yes Really)

    Mantis shrimp can shatter glass.

Mantis Shrimp have the a weapon called a spear that is the fastest moving thing in the animal kingdom.

  • Second fastest. Still, it HURTS!

  • Well, depending on the species which can be seperated into spearers and clubbers. It would probably take a large spearer like a Lysiosquillina to sever a finger. It would be more of a very bad maiming.

Only a large clubber can break glass, something like Chiragra or Odontodactylus scyllarus(Peacock). Still most of the clubbers are quite docile and will only hit the glass if you provoke them by doing something stupid like tapping on the glass.

  • ouch!

  • What the hell do you keep them in if they can shatter glass?

  • Only certain species can shatter glass and those ones can be kept in a thick walled acrylic/plexiglass tank.

  • The trap-jaw ant Odontomachus bauri, from central and south America, snaps its mandibles shut in a mere 0.13 milliseconds - 2,300 times faster than the blink of an eye, scientists have found.

Travelling at between 115 and 210 feet per second - or up to 145mph - each jaw generates a force 300 times greater than the insect's own body weight.

Experts had thought no animal could move more quickly thanthe mantis shrimp, which delivers a powerful kick at 75 feet per second.

  • I'd not seen a yellow one, that's neat.

  • wow --

  • Was that a peppermint shrimp. Around here they are $15 a peice.

  • It was a camel shrimp. Its about $2.50 in Malaysia.

  • Thank you.

  • What's with the color?

  • Thats a very "pretty" mantis

  • nice.. how old is it? looks like a bad ass baby!

  • Not to sure of the age...I've had it for about 3 months now and its already moulted once.

  • coola shrimp eating a shrimp XD

  • Nice mantis!

    How big is the tank?

  • Its about a a foot by a foot cubed. The LFS I get my stock from sells seawater, so I do a change each week.

  • nice vid and mantis
