wow, that's unlucky. I bet it was the chain which split in the first place. So that it grabed the rear mech and pulled it all the way up. But the chain issue was not realized until it finally gave up. Same thing happened to me, when my chain ripped the the rear mech and snapped the hanger into half.
An historic ride.... Isn't this where it all started back in the days of yore, in the early 1800s with the velocipede and dirt roads? ;-)
