I had heard of this and thought to myself what a great idea. Being from Washington, I always kept my kids outdoors, exploring and learning. Even now that my kids are in their 30's, they do the same with their children and, they know a lot more than most city kids do both academically and, with their knowledge of nature. My grandchildren would rather be outdoors learning than sitting inside on a computer, cell phone or at the TV set. My hats off to this type of teaching.
I personally believe all children should learn survival skills, as in, what you can eat, how to build a shelter and live off the land. Afterwards, music. It's nice to see someone putting effort into showing these children a life outside of the cage and without TV. I love how the reporter used the word "domesticated".
These children will grow up respecting nature and respecting our world. If every child had this education there would be no more global warming, these kids will soon be the adults running the world.

I believe that there should be a balance in everything,everyone needs nature and everything it has to offer BUT other than that they should be taught how to blend w/ the society, they should learn academics as well and proper behavior when your not in the wilds.Those kids for sure will urinate anywhere when they are in the mall.

Great story. Getting back to nature and understanding our role as humans within it. In American society our myopic Abrahamic-descended faith encouraged to domineer and destroy nature for our personal needs. Getting back to our real spiritual, heathen/druidic roots allows us to enjoy our environment and respect it. We also learn that we're an integral part of nature rather than its dictator.
I grew up in the countryside, with my school being surrounded by a huge field and glens, etc. I feel sorry for people who had to grow up in ugly, polluted, criminally-infested cities. I think the reason we have so many problems in the world is because of people growing up in cities. They are out of touch with the real world, and they also learn to be selfish, greedy, sociopaths, because cities are by and large dog-eats-dog societies. :(
I am 43 years old and am still learning, I also like to be interest led. I have found that I learn much more by following my interests and the various threads that trail off from each subject. So I support this way of learning for all ages, because you should never let your education get in the way of your learning!

As a teacher who has had to deal with remedial kids who are not up to grade level, I'm wondering when the heck they're going to get around to teaching them those ABC's. While this is nice for an occasional field trip, and I'm all for teaching kids an awareness of the natural world, I'm sick of having to teach kids things they should've learned a long time earlier.

I personally believe all children should learn survival skills, as in, what you can eat, how to build a shelter and live off the land. Afterwards, music. It's nice to see someone putting effort into showing these children a life outside of the cage and without TV. I love how the reporter used the word "domesticated".

I believe that there should be a balance in everything,everyone needs nature and everything it has to offer BUT other than that they should be taught how to blend w/ the society, they should learn academics as well and proper behavior when your not in the wilds.Those kids for sure will urinate anywhere when they are in the mall.

Depending on where you live, knowing a secondary language is also needed and you wont learn that from jumping up and down in the mud...
Playing in the forest isnt a bad thing for kids, but nether is getting some education at the school bench ether.
I would be more accepting of a half and half system because I think it would cut down on kids getting the fake diagnoses of ADHD and similar.

I grew up in the countryside, with my school being surrounded by a huge field and glens, etc. I feel sorry for people who had to grow up in ugly, polluted, criminally-infested cities. I think the reason we have so many problems in the world is because of people growing up in cities. They are out of touch with the real world, and they also learn to be selfish, greedy, sociopaths, because cities are by and large dog-eats-dog societies. :(

This story sort of pisses me off. As a teacher who has had to deal with remedial kids who are not up to grade level, I'm wondering when the heck they're going to get around to teaching them those ABC's. While this is nice for an occasional field trip, and I'm all for teaching kids an awareness of the natural world, I'm sick of having to teach kids things they should've learned a long time earlier.
