2008 Indy 500 Preview: 180 MPH at Indy inside a Corvette

OK - new math: It takes him 15 seconds to complete the straightaway. At 5/8 mile long that gives him an average straightaway speed of 150mph. He starts the straight at about 110mph. Some of you physics gurus can plug all this into a formula and get an exact top speed if you assume acceleration is constant. I can't remember the formula but all the info is here to figure it out.

@kerrywsmyth looks to me like they cut out a bit of the straightaway on the vid, and the speedo shot up rather quickly to 180, just as it cuts away, and on the backstretch it was about 150, ballshit!

This guy did the lap in 68-69 seconds (on the video) which translates to an AVERAGE lap speed of 130-132 mph. He only gets to 150 on the backstretch and down to under 110 in the turns, You be the judge on that straight speed.

This corvette burning E 85 its clearly more powerfull than any other using gasoline, just because can hold more compression ratio in the engine and this means more HPs and torque without any sign of detonation ! Great fuel !

Check out Talladega (video above) in a Cup Car. Flat out all the way around the 2.66 mile track with 34 degree banking.

corvette couldnt hang with an indy.....It can take corners at 150 mph and tops speeds up to 220 mph

they take the corners faster than 150, try around 200...

What about the average speed a stock sport car (Corvette or else) could top at Indy ?

I never heard about testing regular sport cars on this track,did it ever happen ?

the car never got close to 180 look at the video. it only gets to 150 for a few turns but then all of a sudden it pulls 180 out of its hat when it pulls away and just shows the speedometer? BS.

This is pretty cool but it seems that the driver would be required to wear a crash helment going 180 MPH at Indy.
