I love this song and perform it a lot. I've met Robbie...nice guy. My heart is in the Irish folk such as Luke Kelly and Irish instrumentals but I've adapted and have learned McNamara's Band, Too Ra Loora, etc. in order to please the Irish Americans who are looking for it.
Now! All together: "Give me some green alligators and long necked geese..."

I hate this shit. It's songs like this screw up Irish music. I grew loving McNamara's band, Danny Boy, now none of the irish bars will play these great sing along songs. They are too busy blaming the English . On St Pat's I put on my old Bing Crosby and the other fun songs fromthe 40's...
@kcstoneguy Yeah, see, the thing is, those songs aren't Irish. They were written by English and Americans who wanted to capitalize on the descendants of Irish immigrants.
This song is funny, and too true. Which is sad, because it was the Irish in America during the 19th and early 20th centuries who actually rescued traditional Irish music for Ireland, where it had all but died out.
With our band we've been fortunate, in a lot of our gigs, to play areas like Omaha and Kansas City where the audiences are somewhat more enlightened and who appreciate the more trad stuff that we like to play. But we usually still get someone who wants to hear Danny Boy.
excellent,,

A beautiful and brilliant song. I don't know what it is, but whenever I hear great Irish music, I crave a good beer.

Great!
What he's singing about is a serious matter-
I've encountered it meself many times at gigs in The USA and Europe-
I hit upon performing John Lennon's
"Luck of The Irish" for these people-
a song so over-the-top in it's attempt to be Irish that folks just back away...
very handy
