I hear he played in some tunings that were as much as full 2 steps down from standard.

In the close ups you can really see how loose the strings are on the guitar from that kind of tuning. It must of been like playing rubber bands almost.

I think he only tuned down that much on the 12 string. On 6 string he just used DGDGBD for this tune.
