This was just VERY stupid of that community to have allowed this. There are plenty of other places to visit in this country if the Gettysburg area wants to be dumb
I was there seeing this as a kid, I dont remember it that well, except I screamed when it happend and cried. To this day I still remember it, I miss this tower, My mom worked in a tiny red building in front of it, Vivid part of my childhood
New visitors center is dunb--far less parking spaces then old center. A money pit as they now charge to get in old center was free. One parking lot is for green vehicles and when visited in June2011 only two cars was parked there and all other lots were full and had to park 1/2 mile away
We took a family trip to Gettysburg in 1974 when that tower was new. I was in 4th grade. I remember my mom was looking forward to seeing the battlefield from it. That tower made quite an impression on my when I was young. Gettysburg did as a whole. I became an American Civil War buff because of that trip. It was a nice part of the Gettysburg experience, but it was an ugly as hell structure. I can understand why the locals never wanted it and were happy when it was finally gone. I would be also.
Even though is was neat to see a birds eye view of the battlefield. I really do not think that it was necessary to get the enjoyment of the visit. We returned for another visit in 1980. We did not bother with going up the tower. I do hope to revisit Gettysburg again one day. It does not bother me a bit that this tower is no longer there. Or the Cyclorama. The best part of going to Gettysburg is touring the battlefield. Nothing else is needed. I bet that it is better today.
Thank goodness it's gone...the beginning of what has been a tremendous restoration of the battlefield so far. Visiting in 2008 was a huge difference from 2000 and 1995. More work to be done, but the casino decision was a recent good move, not to mention the Civil War Trust buying the old Country Club and beginning the tearing up of the golf course. Now we need to do something about The south end of Steinwehr Ave (less concerned about the merchants to the north) and the Cyclorama Bldg.
I agree that new visitors center is a visit once then just visit to use the bathrooms but think about the many thousands of first or second time visitors to the battlefield. That place was built for them. I'd rather see them go there than spend an hour or so in the ridiculous shops of Steinwehr Avenue. At least that ugly Cyclorama center will be no more and that part of the field converted to the appearance of 1863.
@PaMairi Three cheers to the Recent History Preservationists who saved the Cyclorama theater for now. The colossal arrogance on the part of people who fail to recognize that building's importance as a work of importatnt architectural history, as well as the context for how it was designed in the first place just goes to show what happens when narrow-minded obsessive zeal (in this case to presume Gettysburg should look identical to 1863) takes hold.
@epaddon The tower was a fucking eyesore in an historic area. There was a lot of controversy when it was built (I remember). It's a lot like mounting an observation deck on top of the Titanic wreckage - doesn't respect the memory of those that died on the site. Glad it's gone.
@tritonrocks I was talking about the Cyclorama theater. An important work of 1950s architecture that the ultra 19th century "preservationists" wanted to senselessly destroy in violation of the law I might add.
This tower is no more of an eyesore in my home town of Gettysburg than all the other bullshit buildings that have been built on the battlefield. The entire city of gettysburg is technically the battlefield. If everyone wants the city to be back the way it was when the war happened, tear down every store on Steinwehr Ave, and Baltimore Street. Tearing down something that gave an amazing view of the area was a stupid choice.
This seems to me like simply an event where ignoramuses cheer and pat each others backs over the destruction of the only true way to put the battlegrounds in perspective. The fallen never had anything looming over them. They are long gone, dead and unable to care for they are no more, as shall be the case with all of us in time.
Awesome! The men who fought and died there do NOT deserve to have that monstrosity looming over them. It should have NEVER been built. People that say they wont go back because its gone are Morons.. they went for the WRONG reasons.
@dirtyfrank81 I agree with you 100% They rip down this great tower that we used to love to use to view the field, and then they build this friken motel right up the street from it. They are trying to make everything original but, I don't think they had a 10 story high, or whatever, motel on the field either! Our family was disgusted when we passed this.
@deerhunter59ify I agree with you 100%. Its a shame to lose the tower. most of my childhood memories are of that tower. its just horrible that they took it down and ppl are happy about it.
2) It's a public forum, dickweed, which means that anyone who wants to chip in can.
3) Maybe I am, and maybe I'm not. I wasn't aware you had to actually be from Gettysburg to have an opinion. I do have a Masters in Civil War history, if that means anything to you.
@Salguine wow, you need to say bad words because you think you can get your point across faster or what? good job buddy. I could care less what education you have nor do i believe you. and yes, you have to be from Gettysburg and youre not. your opinion does not matter to me, to me you dont exist. goodbye.
Point the first: There are no "bad" words. There are only words.
Point the second: That you doubt the existence of my degree leaves me so broken up inside I don't know what to do or think. (Incidentally, did you mean you COULDN'T care less?)
Point the third: No, you don't have to be from Gettysburg.
Point the fourth: Thank you for not putting "ppl" in your last message.
Point the last: The tower was still a shitty eyesore.
@dirtyfrank81 No. I lost interest and walked away. You bore the shit out of me. Having a battle of wits with you is like having a fistfight with Stephen Hawking; even though it's an easy win, it's profoundly unsatisfying on every conceivable level.

In place of that silly tower is now an incredible NPS Visitor Center. What would you rather prefer?
PaMairi 1 year ago
@PaMairi
The Tower.
Who needs a big fancy Visitor Center to understand the concept of the Battle Of Gettysburg.
Travel the battlefield roads, read the monuments. VISIT THE TOWER TO SEE THE ENTIRETY OF THE LAND
Now we get to walk into a big fancy money pit where we can go eat and buy novelty items.
Kudos to you Mr Demolisher.

So then is it agreed that my 343 brothers and sisters who lost their life fighting evil at the trade centers on 9/11 should deserve the same?

Nah, the observation tower was an eyesore on the landscape - good riddance.
