He's doing the arm vibrato, i prefer the hand vibrato, but both ways are fine , haha i enjoy this video, its a good exercise and the sound is horrendous, but what you get from this is an amazing vibrato
i think you palm and forearm should be closer to form a straight line, your palm shouldn't be that curved and facing your shoulder, it should face your forehead. If you're bending your palm towards your left shoulder or lower, you'll add unnecessary tension in your arm, and you won't be able do vibrato for long. It's something i'm working on, some of you could contradict me, personally i feel i can vibrate longer
Hey you have your thumb under the neck of the violin, just like I hold mine! My teachers always complain about it but I honestly can't play any other way. I'm so glad to see a teacher that uses the same hand position as I do :)
The reason you dont hold it with your thumb is due to finger angles. I'm a beginning player so correct me if I'm wrong anywhere but you get an entirely different hand position playing with your thumb off to the side. Less stress on the joints in your hand and you get more strength from your pinky.
@mutemax7 There were many different European schools of music way back when--each school had different teachers, each teacher had different methods of playing the violin. There are two variations to the violin hold: the first one was demonstrated in the video, where the player curved his thumb underneath the neck of the violin; the second is to cradle the neck of the violin between the crevice of the thumb and index finger. I was taught both. Neither is wrong. It's all preference.
Some of you people are being just a bit ridiculous. I'm by no means an expert but every teacher on youtube suggests the same thing he does. Rock your finger while keeping pressure on the note and use the motion with your wrist and/or arm. He's doing it very slowly but it's exactly what it's supposed to sound like.
Do you think you could do this without counting during the music? I could use it in my movie if you would be kind enough to let me and it would sound awesome!
My husband, a concert pianist heard this and asked, "They're going to teach you that? That sounds terrible!" LOL. I've never played vibrato and am just learning about it! Thanks
I dont do Vibrato like that. I move my finger side to side sorta, I dont bend then straighten my finger. Im only 10 though. I have a teacher, but Im trying to learn Vibrato on my own =P Don't tell him.
ouch now my problem is getting consisting bowing whilst doing the vibrato - this vid helped quite a bit though thx :) professorv has some great vids as well :) though they're a bit in depth and i almost lost track of what he was explaining prior X_X the camera angle in this vid helps a ton though, for sure!
Not at all inspiring sir, but thanks for the info anyways. With concentration and care (yes, even as a beginner) we can avoid learning to play sick and dying bumble bees. Just give the resulting sound a little attention - You'll find it works wonders and pleases the ears :)
Thank you ariavbuc, but you're emotional and it seems you misunderstood the video.
For those that don't know: the human ear will pick out just below the highest sound as the distinction of the note. I hope most people understand that this vid is very good, but meant to help the novice.
There's no sense in discouraging beginners with silly semantics. These soon come with perseverance. He seems to not be counting beats(I hope not too many thought that), but the movements... and he's in tune.
It's painful to listen to it. It's horribly slow... and yeah, sharp of the note below it 90% of the time. It sounds almost magical when it's smoothed together though because your ear will pick out the 10% as the distinction.
I have played the violin for approximately 8 years. My vibrato was always pretty poor. Recently in my reading of techniques I came across a few words that made a world of difference! The vibrato sound comes from rocking the finger BACKWARDS.....NOT FORWARD....as I have been doing for so many years. Try it again keeping this in mind.....my guess is that it will help many of you........happy fiddlin' all............
My bow hand and my left hand are trying to..do th same thing..argggggg: how can you avoid this? I can't keep playing the whole bow, it sorts of stops when I bend my knuckle!!!
reminds me of that game of tapping your belly while you rub your tummy or vice versa..lol You end of either tapping both or rubbing both.
Another good way to learn how to do vibrato is to wave loosely at the room in general, then wave at yourself. Bring your hand up to the fingerboard, continuing to wave at yourself. Hold your thumb in place, and voila!
thank u very much for this demo im in 7th grade my first year of playing viola was moved from beging to intermediate but wat ever bout that but thanks for teaching this i preciate man thanks alot. : )) 5/5!
I can't vibrato at all. Whenever I try, it ALWAYS sounds like I'm trilling the note. My orchestra instructor doesn't make it any easier, either. He spent 5 minutes trying to teach the entire violin section on vibrato, and NONE of us can do it, and he can't understand why.
It is the hardest thing I've ever attempted on an instrument... some people's hands are just shaped well for it... mine are DEFINITELY not... and my pinky is completely dependent on my 3rd finger... there is no way I can do vibrato with my pinky...
I can't do vibrato! I try, and try, and try, but to no avail. This looks like the easy tutorial on youtube so far, but I can't even master this. My wrist can never move by itself; it always needs the help of my arm! Enlightenment please!
I cant get this... maybe it's because of my hands? I have long fingers (because I am used to piano) and when I followed this video, something doesn't seem right... Please teach us...
my fingers doesn't do it... maybe because I dont have shoulder rest? Please provide us answers...
@1013TwilightRide1013 why not try an arm vibrato? then you don't have to move from your wrist, instead the motion comes from your elbow.. there's a great tutorial about it by proffesorV..
You can always try arm vibrato, where your entire arm is moving instead of your wrist. It's, like, ten times easier and the sound is just as good. The only problem is that the movement sometimes causes the note to slip out of tune.
My orchestra teacher has us do the same thing. He says it's like polishing the string with your fnger, but faster. He has us do the same thing that the dude in the video is demonstrating, but then to make sure the timing of the "wawawa's" are even so that it doesn't sound sporatic. My teacher has us go faster and faster so that soon it sounds like vibrato.
:)
I hope that helped some peopel, because it kind of helped me learn vibrato. :)
this video missed a lot of points about vibrato on the violin, the basic idea is good but it misses major points about where the vibrato should occur inrelation to the note, most violinst prefer it to be slightly high as 'sharp' playing tends to be much more pleasing than flat. the obvious issue is that 1/3 of the vibrato is in tune (moving finger back slightly) and 2/3rds out of tune...
muchas gracias, este video me va a servir mucho para practicar el vibrato en mi violin, yo nunca he tomado clases pero gracias a videos como este, ya estoy tocando algo, muchas gracias desde Chile.
ok... before attemping to vibrate.... learn to play normally and build your finger strength and flexibility first!!!! Nothing is more difficult then trying to vibrate before getting the basics...... then start slowly...practising in front of a mirror helps...
my teacher had an earlier technique before this to help with vibrato. you would slide your fingers and and down the finger board without pressing down
ok...a vibrato is basically wavering the pitch of a note, so in slo-mo, a vibrato, no matter how good, will probably sound about like that, even Itzhak Perlman's ( if you dont know him, you dont really know violinists) would probably sound like that if he had a video of him doing it slowly.
i agree with the violin teacher guy. its a step by step thing. u gotta make ur wrist be used to vibrating. gentle soft and relaxed movements back and forth. not ur joints. trust me, my teacher used to teach at julliard
hmm, now I'm a firmly established guitarrist, and all i know is that when playing guitar, you should avoid collapsing the last knuckle (crease, segment, whatever) of the fingers like you seem to be doing as it creates tremendous stress on the ligament, which is something you really don't want. I suspect that this transfers to violin as well as it is still the same collapsing that causes damage.
I have played the violin for 12 years. And during my "education" there wasnt any "vibrato lesson".
It is a very individual skill. First of all students must learn playing. After some years they can learn vibrato technique. Then, you integrate vibrato in your normal etuedes.
It is a skill you have to learn step by step...
However, your lesson demonstrates the principle of the vibrato.
@fungyiucho , i've been taking private music lessons for multiple instruments my entire life. and yes, im learning to play violin. yours was the least helpful bit of musical information i've ever received.
But that is exactly what he is demonstrating!!!!!!
You're right that vibrato is an individual skill that should only be practised once playing normally is mastered. All he is doing is showing the technique (slowly for the idiots that complained about the noise) for people to build up from. Some people are learning the violin via youtube! It doesn't just come vibrato, you have to know the technique!
a super easy way to do this is with a small rubber ball, like the ones that you get from the coin machines. place it on the fingerboard with whichever finger you wish to practice vibrato with. then simply roll your finger (on the ball) back and forth slowly and build momentum until you have a strong solid rocking. *note* make sure you always start backwards before going forwards. a good vibrato works that way
Quickly, if you can already vibrato, it seems. If he doesn't move his arm back, what is supposed to bring it back? Sorry, I'm just learning and have stiff fingers. This video seems like it would help me.
He's showing how to practice it. You want to start slow with a wide motion and get faster where if you just try to do it fast at first, it's harder to develop a wider motion.
err i might be wrong but are you not changing your notes?i mean such as if you where play your f sharp it looks like if i was to do that it would be getting messed up..er....umm..
Impressive technique of the fingers but remember not to pull back after pulsing back. Your hand should naturally spring back. If you pull it back, you'll get into the bad habit of going above the note.
I have a question for the video producer....um when your doing the finger movement on your fingerboard do you necessarily have to move your wrist back and forth or can you just keep your wrist still and move you finger.PLaese comment back!!
yes u have to move ur wrist to get the full effect otherwise it wont be the proper way, and also u can try to move ur finger up and down on the finger board and as u get the hang of it lessen ur distance of u moving ur finger up and down on the fingerboard and eventually u'll obtain vibrato.
The video is hopeless, not you. Try this way: slide your hand up so that the palm is against the body and play a note with one finger. While you are playing the note, move your wrist slowly back and forth but make sure to always keep your palm against the body of the instrument. Practice this for ten minutes every day and when you feel comfortable, try it a little faster. Also, the video is a very bad example of how your thumb should look. Your thumb should always be curved up, not flat down.
UM I tried out your suggestion and it helps because it's easier to move your wrist without no doing it at all.Hopefully my teachers will approve of the method. And thanks!
relax... hand vibrato is better than arm vibrato.
Thats what my teacher said from the Menuhin Violin School.

hermyny 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but that is not the proper way to develop a good vibrato.
mcar1960 2 years ago 15
then.....please show us how
fungyiucho 2 years ago
Every person has different fingers, there are no specific ways to develop vibrato. Thus, the thumb should not move while doing vibrato.

Ohhh, thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed for my song to sound just perfect!

thx for the demo! for some reason i always have trouble with the fourth finger tehe
flora3576 2 years ago
It's normal. Only after having mastered the violin should you try to do it with the fourth finger too.
Toiletcat27 2 years ago
that explained it pretty well, i think.

Pretty good!!!!
mina8596 2 years ago
Awful.
clemencie 2 years ago 2
No, it's not how to practice it. The hand should spring back quickly, not be forced back.
Bushy162 2 years ago 6
demo please
fungyiucho 2 years ago
Yes, a demo of your method, Bushy, would help.
Quickly, if you can already vibrato, it seems. If he doesn't move his arm back, what is supposed to bring it back? Sorry, I'm just learning and have stiff fingers. This video seems like it would help me.

This is good exercise. I used to do this many years ago when I was learning vibrato. My how time passes.
dropsoffaith 3 years ago 2
He's showing how to practice it. You want to start slow with a wide motion and get faster where if you just try to do it fast at first, it's harder to develop a wider motion.

this is shit!.. vibrato is made as you want and as you can!.. there is no a rule for all vibratos. it is as you get comfortable with it!

This is actually a very bad way of showing someone that vibrato is good, I agree with hamedk79, he sounds like he's been strangling a cat.
I've been playing for eight years, since I was six, and trust me beginners it will sound better when you do it for yourself. :)
icestar188 3 years ago
It is a very common way to practice vibrato.

Are you pressing lightly on the strings for vibratos? It looks like you're pushing down pretty hard.
Thanks.

musicequaloxygen 3 years ago
Impressive technique of the fingers but remember not to pull back after pulsing back. Your hand should naturally spring back. If you pull it back, you'll get into the bad habit of going above the note.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOES. It is grateful enormously.

OMG, my teacher taught me like the same thing, it does help. TRY IT!
KonataSuzumiya0 3 years ago
I have a question for the video producer....um when your doing the finger movement on your fingerboard do you necessarily have to move your wrist back and forth or can you just keep your wrist still and move you finger.PLaese comment back!!
angelwings122 3 years ago
yes u have to move ur wrist to get the full effect otherwise it wont be the proper way, and also u can try to move ur finger up and down on the finger board and as u get the hang of it lessen ur distance of u moving ur finger up and down on the fingerboard and eventually u'll obtain vibrato.
aRtIfIcIAl20 3 years ago
angelwings122, GREAT question! Do you move your finger, your wrist, or your forearm? I saw someone moving their forearm only. Omg! How confusing!
I think I'll Google it! lol lol

This is hopeless or maybe I'm hopeless.I watched this video countless number of times and still do get the fingering.HELP, ANYONE!!!
angelwings122 3 years ago
The video is hopeless, not you. Try this way: slide your hand up so that the palm is against the body and play a note with one finger. While you are playing the note, move your wrist slowly back and forth but make sure to always keep your palm against the body of the instrument. Practice this for ten minutes every day and when you feel comfortable, try it a little faster. Also, the video is a very bad example of how your thumb should look. Your thumb should always be curved up, not flat down.
hippiechickie18 3 years ago 3
UM I tried out your suggestion and it helps because it's easier to move your wrist without no doing it at all.Hopefully my teachers will approve of the method. And thanks!
