Zimbabwe's black population at the turn of the century was approximately 500 000 and had no commercial farming. There were thousands upon thousands of hectares of land, enough for everyone.

@matbhm The problem with the land reform is not that it is being taken by whites and given to blacks. That could theoretically work. The problem is that most farms are being arbitrarily taken from white farmers and given to blacks who have little to no experience with farming. This led to agricultural output for the whole of Zimbabwe decreasing by almost 75%, causing a nationwide famine and inflation rising to 231 Million Percent.

I don't like Mugabe but over 90% of black Zimbabweans were poor before him. In the 80s and early 90s Zimbabwe reached an economic peak like it did in the 60s.

But what I am saying is that oftentimes we only consider one side of the story. We do not look at the context of decisions. I concede in practice he was wrong, but in principle reform is right. Lets not preach without understanding the decades of white oppression. When you blame Mugabe, you must also blame British policies that birthed this.

I also said that I do not agree with how Mugabe implemented his policy in practice. Although in principle land reform is the right option. All I am saying is that people talk less about the legacy of Ian Smith and make a bigger deal of Mugabe. I agree they were both wrong, but it is hypocritical to criticize one without the other, and to ignore the context.

@matbhm The problem with the land reform is not that it is being taken by whites and given to blacks. That could theoretically work. The problem is that most farms are being arbitrarily taken from white farmers and given to blacks who have little to no experience with farming. This led to agricultural output for the whole of Zimbabwe decreasing by almost 75%, causing a nationwide famine and inflation rising to 231 Million Percent.

I don't like Mugabe but over 90% of black Zimbabweans were poor before him. In the 80s and early 90s Zimbabwe reached an economic peak like it did in the 60s.

Black people in Zimbabwe deserve a right to the means of production. The reason why Zimbabweans did not automatically engage perfectly in commercial farming was because they were subjected for decades to an inferior colonial education instigated by the former white government. Reform takes time to implement.

Hearing and listening to Robert Mugabe's speeches make me sick. We had a great opportunity to rid Rhodesia/Zimbabwe of 2 ruthless, barbaric terrorists in March 1980. Under Operations Quartz and Operation Hectic, terrorist leaders Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo would have been terminated for good. Rhodesian special forces were on stand-by. All terrorists would have been eliminated at their assembly staging camps. Final go ahead command was never given for reasons unknown.
