The hyena is is an excellent hunter with a better success rate than the lion. Also, often lion don't kill their prey before eating it and then eat very slowly. Their live prey can be conscious for hours. Many examples are in the videos linked here. (Worst: search for 'lion eat baby elephant') A hyena's prey will be dead within ten, fifteen minutes tops.
Hyena cubs live on milk for their first year, so what a nursing hyena eats goes into producing the most protein rich milk of any land mammal.

It was disturbing watching the baby zebra, get his face eaten bij the hyena. The baby was in a shock. So it would not run away. It's better the zebra died, than have no quality in live, with half of his face missing. If the hyena did this to an adult zebra, the zebra had more chance for survival. This was a baby zebra, having no experience at all, to defend itself or try to escape. Saying that the zebra deserved to die, is not really a clear view to this vid.

How do you expect an animal that doesn't have claws or large canine teeth, or a jaw that opens that wide, to go for an instant throat kill? They just aren't equipped like that. Cats are the only animals in the world that go for the throat kill, and that don't do it all the time either. Most animals eat their prey alive just like this. Although I will admit it was disturbing watching the zebras face get bitten off.

how odd. most predators try to kill their prey as quickly as possible by biting its throat or breaking its neck. the hyena seems to just chew on whatever, until the animal dies from shock and blood loss.

So no time to sit down with the prey and slowly suffocate it as a male lion calmly does. I have seen one video where one hyena runs away with a Zebra entrails while that same Zebra was still fighting for its life with the rest of the hyena clan.

@kalevraa What drives this approach is the competition for food among hyena clan, and the fact that larger predator like a lion can come and take. So no time to sit down with the prey and slowly suffocate it as a male lion calmly does. I have seen one video where one hyena runs away with a Zebra entrails while that same Zebra was still fighting for its life with the rest of the hyena clan.

@aguuled this is a reasonable explanation. yet wolves, who also hunt in packs and presumably also compete for food, tend to go for the quick kill by biting the throat. seeing the zebra being yanked by the face leaves me puzzled -- surely the most efficient thing for the hyena would be to kill the foal by grabbing its throat with the powerful jaws, crushing the larynx or tearing the jugular or even the arteries. mucking about like this takes time, which it can't afford. so...?
