I think a lot people didn't like this game because they had their own image of Samus from the past games. I was actually relieved that she had her own humanistic character instead of something that could be portrayed as a symbol of feminism or "men-hating ice queen" stereo-type. It's a pity I think, just like in the game where Samus mentions her trouble with the possibility of being seen weak for being a woman, even in real life some fans tend to force their own gender assumption to her.
@pbkillstrike I think it tried to reach territories that Nintendo doesn't usually cross in video games. While I agree it was flawed and I can only assume there were story elements lost in translation, I wouldn't agree that the story utterly sucked, but I guess I'm the minority in that sense.

I felt like the alot of the emotion in the story was most definitely lost in translation (mostly the VAs' faults) but even things lost in translation can't completely ruin a narrative. Everything was quite shallow and extremely linear, something that the metroid series prided itself on NOT having. Gameplay was very fun but watered down due to the whole restriction system.
@lukasmezadj I actually think this is the best Metroid game so far :) Although, I am starting to wonder how many times she can wipe the metroids out, just for someone else to bring them back, that has happened in too many games already.

Be that as it may, I still feel this was a rushed job that deserved a lot more playtesting and analysis from people outside the development team so they could've avoided the backlash they got from this. You can look it up yourself, but there was such a backlash to how this game was done that they are hesitant to ever repeat the same mistakes again.
The failure of other M has nothing to do with her being 'Boba Fett with tits' and mostly to do with several factors like badly-done game mechanics (the unlock system), poorly-written cutscenes and dialogue (making Samus a submissive bitch, pretty much), and much more.
Only a female in the military can speak about military procedure, but all I can say is that I highly doubt they let em almost get killed before helping.
Anytime Samus isn't in her Power Armor, the cutscenes and camera angles do nothing but gawk over her body (a LOT) and you can even make your own 'fanservice angle' count and start losing track easily before you even get halfway through the game.
If you completely ignore the absolutely atrocious voice acting (contender for worst voice actress in the history of gaming, easily) and other failures, you realize how badly things were done. Samus deserved better.

@darkly41 There's a difference between being surprised and having a meltdown like she did. She had already "killed him" twice before. I'd think if she were to have a surprised meltdown due to thinking he was dead, that would have happened after he died once. And I think she had an idea it was Ridley after it turned purple and tried to kill her. It just seems weird for a hardened bounty hunter like her to have that meltdown like she did.

Fusion,prime 1, super metroid, prime 2, original metroid, ,prime 3, other m, zero mission, then metroid 2,return of samus. Haven't played hunters yet, so I don't know how it rates.
The Pixel hunts sucked the areas with walls that forced players to walk back and forth examining the floor/wall incredulously sucked, her incessant narration of obvious things was annoying, the metroid prime camera was clunky... looks great though.

@TheTopDeckHero If you like FPS:ers then Metroid Prime might be a very nice change of pace. It's not really a first person shooter (even though it most certainly looks like one). It has a, in my opinion deeper experience to it and most people call it a "First person adventure"-game. You could however wait for the Wii U (which will be released in a year) and save money for that. It will be fully backwards compatible with the Wii so you can play all those Metroid-games on the Wii U. Just saying =)

But it might be since I had played Metroid Prime 1 and 2 just before Prime 3 so I might have been a bit tired of that kind of game. However, if you can get your hands on Metroid Prime: Trilogy (all three prime games with Wii-controls on one disc). So far, Metroid has yet to disappoint me. I first played a game from the series two years ago (Prime) and fell instantly in love with the franchise.
@TheTopDeckHero Yeah, you hold it sideways for regular combat and point at the screen to enter first person mode where you can't move, but you can shoot missiles and search for hidden items and such in that mode. The controls actually work really well. I recommend the game for most people who haven't played a Metroid-game before. It's a bit short, but it's also quite cheap nowadays and well worth the money. :)
@TheTopDeckHero Hmmm... can't really say I agree. Even though the plot was nice there are a few things that I wouldn't want in a Metroid-movie. Sure, the game is really cinematic and all, but I would've enjoyed a movie about her first bounty-hunter mission and starting the movie from when she was really young and her parents got killed by Ridley. She gets raised by the chozo and all that. I think it could work for a movie. Scarlett Johansson would, IMO, do a great Samus.

This is a very incredible trailer. It even shows the scenes where Ridley nearly killed Samus when she was only 4, as well as the explosion that killed her father. (Ridley killed her mother only a few seconds prior to turning his attention to Samus).

@Fefs92 The plot was never the issue. The game just doesn't feel fun. The autoaiming bullets, the jumping~ the complete lack of exploration and wonky progression. I just found it disappointing. I found every single other Metroid, including Super and even Prime more engaging. Metroid Prime 1-3 for all its wonkiness, is still~ a Metroid title. With exploration, expansion and growth. You can tell a story, that's fine~ I'm fine with that, but keep it a Metroid game. Other M was not.
The actress in this is perfect as Samus. Problem is, if they make a Metroid movie, I'm worried it'll wind up like Tomb Raider if not done correctly- good games, god awful movie. Making movies from games is delicate business.
The first time I saw this, I thinked it was like a movie of metroid. When It ended, I screamed so loudly that my cat jumped very high. But it's a good thing that a manga inspired the game (O.O)

@TheTopDeckHero Hmmm... can't really say I agree. Even though the plot was nice there are a few things that I wouldn't want in a Metroid-movie. Sure, the game is really cinematic and all, but I would've enjoyed a movie about her first bounty-hunter mission and starting the movie from when she was really young and her parents got killed by Ridley. She gets raised by the chozo and all that. I think it could work for a movie. Scarlett Johansson would, IMO, do a great Samus.

This is a very incredible trailer. It even shows the scenes where Ridley nearly killed Samus when she was only 4, as well as the explosion that killed her father. (Ridley killed her mother only a few seconds prior to turning his attention to Samus).

I don't understand Nintendo's campaign here. This is the second to newest game in the Metroid timeline. It happens directly before Fusion. Why are they saying it's her past? Prime was her past!

@xxdjclix995xx Actually now that I think about it, I dont care what console metroid is on. As long as the gameplay remains the same and is still made by nintendo. If sonic survived leaving sega, I dont see why metroid or zelda wouldnt (Allthough thats extremely unlikely because they have strictly been nintendo for over 20 years). I dont see them giving up one of their best franchises.

@xxdjclix995xx Nintendo didn't own Perfect Dark, Rare did. Metroid is owned by Nintendo, so the only way it could be on 360 is if the Wii U completely fails and Nintendo goes 3rd party like Sega.

@Fefs92 The plot was never the issue. The game just doesn't feel fun. The autoaiming bullets, the jumping~ the complete lack of exploration and wonky progression. I just found it disappointing. I found every single other Metroid, including Super and even Prime more engaging. Metroid Prime 1-3 for all its wonkiness, is still~ a Metroid title. With exploration, expansion and growth. You can tell a story, that's fine~ I'm fine with that, but keep it a Metroid game. Other M was not.

The actress in this is perfect as Samus. Problem is, if they make a Metroid movie, I'm worried it'll wind up like Tomb Raider if not done correctly- good games, god awful movie. Making movies from games is delicate business.
