Remember, when him and Nui are in the woods are he notices a gathering of Mushi above her head? She shows him that by puffing her smoke at them they move away, but then she says that they'll be back soon? Basically, because of their condition, they have to be continuously shrouded by smoke to keep away the Mushi. It's the nature of their condition that after a period of time, they'll meet death by Mushi, so the smoke helps to delay the inevitable.
